Consider this: people have used religion to justify and advance their agendas since the earliest days. The Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trials, Terrorism, Hard Right Conservative Evangelicals, most Cops, even the Nazis had "Gott mit uss" (God with us) stamped on their belt buckles and terrorists shout "Allah ackbar!" (God is great) as they sacrifice their own lives taking as many innocent victims with them as they can.
All of these groups of people engage or engaged in evil to one degree or another and have racked up a body count in the multi-millions while atheism has a pretty much bloodless history of reason and non-violence.
What can we conclude from these facts on the influence of God throughout history?
I had a discussion with a Christian about Christian terrorism and murders. She insists that has never happened. When I mentioned the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trials, the abortions bombings her reply was "well, those aren't REAL Christians".
I did tell her that as far as they were concerned they were REAL Christians. She had no reply to that.
The no true scotsman defence
Did you mean she said "Those were NOT real Christians" ?
Religion is, and always has been, a personal display. The peacock, spreading its tail and saying 'Look at ME! I'm BETTER than you. I believe in GOD (and that's the RIGHT god - not the ridiculous, childish, fairy-tale gods others believe in) and this means I'm INHERENTLY GOOD even when I act like a complete bastard. Because of this I can wallow in my own bigotry, injustice, intollerance and mysogyny to my heart's content - and STILL look at myself in the mirror and convince myself I'm perfect.'
'The meek shall inherit the earth' - yeah, right!
It's not about being meek. It's about being arrogant and hypocritical... and still having the 'I'm a man/woman of god' get-out-of-jail-free card.
#ToakReon Well stated!
Blaming 'gods' or belief in them ignores the commonality shared by theologies and secular ideologies, placing sole responsibility for destructive human behavior on imaginary entities.
People get angry when their expectations are not realized and angry at anything that undermines their 'faith' that expectations are real enough to be realized; as in becoming manifest in their reality some time and some place.
Religions are protection/salvation games that are very costly of life, love and material means to play in the long-term. Bad news is never welcome and particularly so if it even hints that our 'faith' in things we come to the opinion are vital are actually nothing we imagine them to be; sometimes nothing at all.
Secular 'faiths' can be every bit as dangerous and destructive, all by themselves, as theologies. One of them, Communism, often gets erroneously chalked up to atheist alleged destructiveness because it, like atheists, rejects gods. This, because they fail to recognize (consciously or not) that the 'ism', the ideological construct has merely supplanted gods. Promises are functionally identical. Paradise is promised to the devout and the end (god or ideal) always justifies means. As long a Paradise is somewhere and sometime in the future, the only difference between the one with ecstatic workers and harp playing angels is that one is allegedly material and the other not. In actuality, they are both non-existent and never will be.
As long as our kind follows a penchant for outsourcing personal reality rather than articulating it ourselves, theologians, carnival barkers, politicians, patent medicine purveyors, climate change oracles, pyramid investment geniuses and the rest of the promise merchants will have job security and we'll continue our 6,000 (so far) festival of butchery and intolerance. There's plenty of blame to go around for dispatching deluded people to spread their respective special systems of 'truth' in service to anything and everything except personal use of the faculties we are born with in greater abundance than any other creatures on the planet.
There was no need for Gods influence. Lets say that god does not exist. Can anyone demonstrate that things would be any different? I do not think there is a god to have any influence.
Atheism, Agnosticism, Freethinking,, is not and have never been an ideology, a religion, a belief, a movement, a party,,,, it is nothing but a simple necessity as an answer to a widely spread thesis called 'God' (s), 'the opium of the masses'! When someone cause harm and is 'an atheist, agnostic,,,' then it's his/her/their own responsibility. Religions, ideologies, beliefs,, and especially the ones with those 'nice scriptures' have on the other hand to answer!
Athiesm has been pretty much bloodless? I beg to differ.
Then demonstrate where atheism has been used as a rallying cry or used to promote a bloody agenda of atheism as a belief system. There has certainly been fascist atheists who facilitated the deaths of millions but not for the advancement of atheism nor while crying for atheism forever. Atheism in these instances was only incidental to the mad lust for power of the fascists at its core. These men murdered millions to cement their own political hold onto power, not to advance the cause of atheism itself,
There's a significant difference.
@Sgt_Spanky Of course I can not demonstrate where atheism has been used as a rally cry. I just don’t draw as much distinction between an atheist operating badly and it being used as a rally cry. I’m prepared to own the bad things that happened under athiestic regimes and admit that atheism is not a panacea per se.
@indirect76 There will always be men of all beliefs or no belief who will commit their atrocities but my point is that only theists will do so to advance their faith or use their faith as an excuse for their atrocities while atheism has no such agenda. Man will commit their madness no matter what but only theism will use its message to justify itself or make itself the reason for the violence it manufactures.
Here we go again! In the name of 'anti-philatelism' the non-stamp collector is guilty of crimes against those who choose to collect stamps? Atheism, as a conceptual point of view, is incapable of being saddled with, or assigned blame for, any criminal behavior.

Islam: Darkness spread by the sword for 1400 years. The non-stop invasion continues . We must resist.
It is perhaps more about the influence of the belief in gawd.
I conclude that all of these groups think that they have the one true handle on the "truth", even willing to commit murder in the name of and for their God. This obviously isn't logical because they can't all be right. I call it brainwashed!
Why can't they all fight about it and get back to us when they all agree? Isn't that logical?
The trouble with truth is it's frequently whatever the individual decides it is rather than what it really is.
Those were the good ole days?
I'm not making that judgement, I'm just pointing out some facts relative to my point.
We may have an understanding of the word Atheist but it is probably the most misunderstood word in our common language despite it simplicity of meaning. ' Communist ' also has a much simpler meaning than its history tells us. The concept of going Atheist has also been built up to strike fear just the same. We have to get round this if we are to get a surge in advancement.
your evil is some other mans angel.
this should be man's bible.
