Childhood mementos.
Do you have any mementos from your childhood? I'm talking about something you have kept with you through several decades, and many transitions.
I have a small little league baseball trophy that the team I was on won in 1961. We we're the champs that year. It was also the year my folks split up. I was 11.
I have three fossils that a friend of my older sister's boyfriend brought back from Africa, and gave to me He gave them to me when I was seven
I love fossils!!! What are they??
I love fossils. On a bike ride a few months ago in the Simi Hills, here in So Cal, I was stopped at the top of a trail and began looking at the ground around me; it was decorated all over with clamshell impressions in bits of broken shale. I tripped out on that, as I was on a ridge probably 1,500 ft above sea level.
I have a small ceramic dog that I’ve exchanged with my Auntie June for years and years until she passed several years ago. I also have a candy dish I was able to get after my grandma (June’s mother passed). I have a bit of a sweet tooth and spent many hours staring at the candy dish as a child. When grandma passed, us grandchildren were asked if there was anything we wanted. I said yes, the green candy dish that had a lid with a chip in the top. No one knew what I was talking about. I told them exactly where it was (my grandma’s house was maybe 800 square feet). Everyone was shocked. My dad said “by god it was right where you said it was.” Apparently not everyone spent hours thinking about Hershey’s kisses like I did.
Beautiful story, thanks.
I have a china doll that my great grandmother gave to me when I was 4 years old.
Sweet. I married a China doll once; got a beautiful, smart daughter out of the deal.
I still have my Six Million Dollar Man toys from when I was a kid. No, I don't have them in a glass showcase in my living room.
Ah, good to know, we've been wondering about you.?
Some books and records, and I know this sounds awful, but an ashtray a friend made in art class and gave to me when I was 15, and had taken up smoking (though my parents didn't know). Oh, and I also have notebooks from High School when I first started writing poetry.
Not awful. A nice remembrance now of good times past.
i have a piece of fur from the second dog i ever owned(the piece from my first dog was never returned, along with other things, by an ex) a handful of feathers from the birds i had when i was a kid, some of my artwork, and my aunt recently gave me a photo of me with my sister and an old family dog
I have my trophy from little league too.. mine was 1974 ... the keychain I still use was from Alford’s Leather shop in upstate NY... sometime in the 70’s
Very cool.
I have an American Legion award that I received when I was 11. I don't know why I keep it. Maybe it reminds me of what a nice young lady I used to be. LOL
Do you keep that trophy because that's the year that your parents split up?
No, I think I keep it to remind me that I was good at something once.
I have my walking doll, my bride doll, a cowboys and a Indian doll. I have a doll cradle that my mom's grandpa's made for her when she was a little girl, that was passed down to me. I have my majorette uniform from when I was about 6. My grandma made it. I have some doll clothes my neighbor made for my doll when I was little. I'm 71 so they are getting pretty old. I have tons off pictures of my great great grandparents. I also have a scrapbook that my ancestors put together with prints of pictures of the Percheron horses that they imported in the 1850's.
I have my matchbook car & truck collection from the late 60's, early 70's along with baseball and football cards from the same era. I still like the cars, mostly the trucks actually. I don't care about the cards but I've kept them with the idea that I'll sort and sell them someday if I need money.
I have a box or two of old photos, high school yearbooks, trophies, report cards, a few toys, etc... And scars, lots of scars, of all types.
I still have my "LETTER" from Middle School Basketball. Looks good as new. I have quite a few written notes and letters, mementos from my youth and ALL of my Report Cards! Who keeps report cards? gads!
I actually have some elementary school report cards; truth.
When I was in 5th grade my dad went on a business trip and brought back for me a men's jeweler box shaped like a treasure chest. It sits on my dresser, home to cufflinks, tie tacks, my dog tags from the service, my ribbon bar, and 45 years of debris, dust, etc. it's held up well, and really doesn't look like it's as old as it is. I, on the other hand...
Very cool. It must also hold many memories.
An Oscar Mayer weiner whistle from when I was a Boy Scout, got it at a jamboree. I also have the newspaper special insert from the 1969 moon landing that was in the Milwaukee Journal.
A weiner whistle; man, I do remember those. I last saw the Wienermobile 3 or 4 years ago.
I wonder what happened to mine since I seem to have kept everything else!
Of course. I have vivid memories from my childhood going all the way bvack to age 4. At age 81, part of me is still that kid.
You're very fortunate. My recollection of my childhood is in brief, disconnected episodes, typically from totally different times in my life. Those times are usually marked by some significant event.
I'm still the kid I was in school too. I've never outgrown my enthusiasm and excitement for life. Everyone says I "attack" life with passion. I'm just me.
Mom came across this a few months ago; the menorah I remember from my childhood. While we stopped "observing" while I was still quite young, I've always remembered this...
Beautiful, and quite significant.
aaaaah, I love it!
I got rid of most of my stuff when I moved to Thailand. It's possible my daughter kept some of it. Most of my photos are in boxes are in the US, the rest are stored on amazon drive.
