I been a yard sale fanatic just about all my life. Some people think that you are buying the other guy's junk but quite often there are perfectly good items that people just do not want anymore. I've bought TV's and good furniture at a yard sale. (For some reason other people call these swap meets.) Is that the idea? You meet up and swap things. LOL

Last Friday after work I went to 2 yard sales close by, spent $3 and came away with over $339 worth of stuff. Gonna list it right here now.

  • A never used all black leather checkbook cover for a quarter. OK, it has a cross on it but now I have holy money.

  • All new wallet windows for your pictures for a quarter. The only other place I know to get these is Amazon for about $12.

  • Logitech main speaker system for a dollar. OK, it is missing 3 speakers but I checked it and it works. Speakers are easy to come by. This is a PC sound system that Amazon sells for $339 they also have the individual speakers.

  • An antenna amplification system for a dollar. It looks like the one I have and was still in the original wrapper. My antenna is 34 feet in the air but a spare amp for one is good to have.

That was it. My quick and easy going home happy as a lark yard sale day. Sometimes things like this just seem to happen. I use this stuff coz I'm not always looking for the latest thing that came out.

Three cheers for treasure hunting!!! I would say MOST of us need nearly NONE of the 'latest things'.

I agree! To be honest, I have walked away from all material belongings several times. They are more of a burden than a benefit.

The four "R's" Recycle, reuse, restore, reown, mean no waste.

My sister finds really good stuff at yard sales. She hunts for things, then hits the flea market and sells them for more. She has found antiques that just need cleaned up, old dolls and other toys that people collect- this is how she and her ex husband made a good bit of their money years ago.

Bought a used Instant Pot Duo 3 qt. for $10 ... Works perfect...$79 at Wal-Mart.

I dressed five grandbabies up until they were three or four. I think everything I bought looked just like new and usually cost less than a dollar. Every one of my kids and grandkids who went out on their own had their kitchens furnished from garage sales. I don't go often anymore because I don't need anything.

My youngest daughter got compliments at her work for the way she was dressed one time. I admit she looks real good. She said to the person "don't let me fool you. I buy from resale stores coz I have teenage kids."

I threw in a picture of my TV antenna that I built out of old TV antenna junk. This is for both UHF and VHF. It is 34 feet in the air on my tower and it is amplified.

I used to do the yard sale thing years ago when I needed stuff. Now I'm on the other side and need to have my own garage sale to get rid of perfectly good stuff. Great way to find good stuff cheap and or pass things on.

I love that getting things you need at lower cost and still serving same purpose inrespect of the price

It's all sort of like Neiman Markup in reverse.

Recycle, reuse, reduce. Good job!

I go to thrift shops, swap meets and garage sales too when I have some extra money, you can find some good deals, I did dumpster diving when I was a teenage found all kinds of good stuff.

The extent of my dumpster diving is kinda like this. I might have a perfectly good oil filled electric heater with one bad roller or leg. This does not get thrown away. I look for the parts I need if others have thrown things away. Later I might give the heater away or take it to a relative.

@DenoPenno And if it doesn't work, check the little mini fuse

I am planning to move in a couple of years to get closer to where Glenn lives and when I do, I plan to have a "Moving in yard sale" I can't think of a better way to meet the new neighbors. I have a lot of stuff to downsize from my life.

Here we have the ultimate 'garage sale'. It's free and is open 4 days a week. This site is the envy of all the other islands which are much bigger. I always say bigger is not better, better is better. Our governor once visited this place and a photo was made of him giving us an award and, in return, receiving an object. I still use a microwave I got (for free) in 2013. BTW most of my clothing, especially pants, have come from there (just needed to learn to hem cuffs.

Love a yard sale. Here in Australia we call them garage sales.

Sometimes we call them that here too, Jolanta. Sometimes the sale is actually inside a big garage as well.

In New England we called them "Tag Sales" (the item was FREE...but you had to pay for the TAG 😂)

@phoenixone1 What if you find something without a tag?

@Jolanta then we negotiate for a new Tag price 😁

I work part time at a thrift store that benefits the community. I still feel the acquisition bug now and then, but very rarely I will give in if it's something useful. This evening I was sorely tempted. A pair of high quality snow shoes! Then I remembered we don't get deep snow here. Crisis averted!

I love garage sales, yard sales, anything like that. One day I bought 2 flat-screen TVs at 2 separate yard sales, each for $10. I always look for cast iron cookware, non-stainless-steel knives, grinders, kitchen things. Stools, small tables, wall mounted shelves,...

I look for things like that and electronic things I can use. Way too many people do not know what they are getting rid of. They simply have too much stuff.

About 12yrs ago, I bought a decent looking microwave at a local moving sale - for FIVE dollars ! I sold the house with it still there, and the new owners claim it still works perfectly to this day . Ha.

Yard sales, garage sales and thrift stores is a Saturday morning ritual for me.

Some good bargains there.

I just bought some shoes for a job interview from a charity shop for US $2.30 today. That was a good score. Just needs a quick polish.

I got a wonderful pair of Dr. Comfort at a resale store. Almost new. Most likely the original owner is dead but I'm not. Beware online shopping for these high dollar shoes coz the "sell you" people will mix in lots of other johnny come lately brands.

@DenoPenno Yeah, I never shop online now. I moved from the UK to NZ. Due to the smaller population here and distance away from large distribution lines, the range online is somewhat limited. Anything ordered on Amazon, for example, has to be shipped in from overseas, as they don’t have a presence here. Closest is Amazon Oz, across the ditch.

My family are all into it. Sister will tell me what the brand is she is wearing, the usual cost retail and what she paid.

Lots of good stuff secondhand here.

I just remembered that the within fi router I am using now came from a resale store. It's in the family of a Netgear Nighthawk and I bought it new in a local resale for $2. This unit puts out a signal for my 3 computers easily over about 65 feet with no problems. I knew it was a new unit simply by looking at the packaging. It was apparently an extra for that local business we had here that shut down. Most resale people have no idea what they are selling.

I also buy T-shirts at this place. A good way of getting them is to buy a "rag bag." I simply will not pay you to sell me a shirt that advertises your business and I have no problems if my T-shirt reads "University of Wisconsin."

Garage sales are, for me an adventure.

If you find boxes of Magic the Gathering cards super cheap, scoop them up and let me know. I'll split any profit with you!
