It comes to something when the police regard it essential to use a taser on a 95 year old woman in an aged care home: [abc.net.au]police-woman-in-hospital-taser/102361018

About time:

NSW police officer who Tasered 95-year-old dementia patient suspended from duty with pay
Claire Nowland continues to receive end-of-life care at Cooma district hospital, as calls for a broader independent investigation grow.

On full pay, hopefully not for too long.

Interesting development:

Clare Nowland: Police 'don't intend' to release video of 95-year-old's Tasering‘.

Says it all really.

The police clearly have an issue with behaving lawfully and honestly.

Yeah, it’s a big story now. Definitely something wrong there.

There is now an update on that event: [abc.net.au]

@anglophone Thanks for the update. The police are clearly still in denial re their reprehensible actions. Hopefully public opinion will encourage a rethink.

@Zealandia Australia has a long history of employing liars, rapists and murderers in position of power. This observation is not limited to just the police. I expect the the person responsible will be charged with manslaughter, found guilty, and sentenced to two years imprisonment, possibly suspended.

There will be an inquiry which will probably be a whitewash that is shelved. The real question, which will probably be totally ignored, and putting it in to Australian vernacular, is "Which dumb cunts put such ignorant murderous louts into uniforms in the first place?".

@anglophone Yeah, exactly. The building manager of my apartment building is an old school ex cop and in kiwi/Oz parlance he’s an alky bastard. No interest in fire safety procedures at all so putting residents at risk. Plus rude and disrespectful despite me always being polite to him. At least I didn’t react to his provocative behaviour and get down in the gutter like him.

Wanker is retiring end of June , so happy to see him go.

I have noticed that there is something going on with Australia's police.
In all states there are police shooting the disenfranchised and the vulnerable.
The shooting of the Train family in Tara leaves more questions than answers, as was the shooting of a young aboriginal in the Northern territory, To the road closure between Banana and Biloela supposedly because the danger from a truck carrying nitrates crashed.Problem is not one council worker knew or was involved in the supposed cleanup. Travelling that same road a day later, there were no signs of the supposed crash, not in the bitumen not any sand to absorb the spiled chemical nor any damage to the grass beside the road.
Something is going on with the States' police But what and why??

That is absolutely ridiculous! Do law enforcement not know how to deescalate a tense situation? Did they not think a taser might kill her? Have they taken a page out of the USA's law enforcement hand book? Shame on them!!!

I have worked/ consulted in Nursing homes, aged care facilities.
A patient pushing a wheelie walker does not have the reach to cause much damage, that aside, Standard practise is to distract the offender and take action accordingly. eg one officer getting behind the offender and disarming her gently. (in extreme aggressive cases. Mostly with dementia patients, take them back to an earlier time in their lives and ask them to help the situation now. The confusion and inner conflict alone gives time to disarm the patient.
It also says a lot about the quality of the staff at the nursing home.
Then again if all you pay is peanuts, the best you can expect is monkeys. Aged care workers earn well below the poverty line Australia wide, yet have similar responsibility to pilot. go figure

The police have obviously taken a leaf out of the American law enforcement handbook here. The page that says "shoot first, ask question later, and dead men tell no tales"!

@vocaloldfart It is a sad state of affairs when the most vulnerable are the high-risk targets. We live in an age where profit outweighs life and the people we vote to protect us, fail us. 😟
