I'd love to see these old churches converted into concert venues. At least that would be enjoyable and would make the towns some money.

Often their acoustics as lecture, concert, or meeting halls works.

Since they don't pay property taxes, Churches add nothing to the city or county coffers. Rejoice in their demise!

Whatever your city does, I hope they don't let crumbling buildings blight their neighborhoods.

Every old church than cannot be converted to another use should be razed to the ground before it becomes an attractive nuisance. Then, if no other plan is in the immediate offing, the land can be used, at least temporarily, for a community garden, or a park, or a baseball or soccer field.

That's happening in my area to small churches. Many are made of brick and are well constructed so people buy them and turn them into nice homes.

Interesting as here most of the population is agnostic or none. However, we do have 3 churches and one is often used for secular gatherings. It has a large meeting room complete with a commercial kitchen. Here we are having a major problem with affordable housing and right now a three bedroom, two car garage is being finished behind the church for a new pastor. Seems there would be a much better use of money than to support the 'superstitious' among us.

There is a delightful restaurant about 4 miles away that is called "La Capilla". (The chapel.)
It has retained most of the religious decor, and large parties can even dine on the raised dais where the altar once stood.

I used to go to a great Mexican restaurant in Denver in a former church. That was a while ago. First time I had posole. I forget the name, but I think it was on Vallejo Street in northwest Denver.

Some have very tall inside walls and make excellent climbing gyms.

Bars and brothels are great uses for ex-churches.

With the rise of secular weddings and celebrations, maybe some of them could be converted into secular event spaces. Weddings, funerals, celebrations of life need a setup similar to a church layout. Just replace the religious symbols with nature scenes and floral displays, etc. Bows on the edge of the pews, or replace them with more comfortable chairs, voila! A wedding venue, which could command some prime site rental fees!

I don't think there is a church that can't be converted into a home, it is almost a tradition in the UK. If you can get your hands on an old disused church, and convert, you are seen as being at the hight of property fashion.
