What if you are wrong and there IS a god

Im atheist . And I get asked this often . Was curious to know other non believers answer to this . Without getting into to much detail my answer is simple. If I am wrong and im hell doomed for not believing then thats fine with me . Maybe hell is where I belong . Because there is just to many things in the bible itself I can't justify . Too many evilness . God murdered o don't know how many people including kids . He tortures gay people . Ect. I will not bow down before such an evil being . I also have questions for him as well. One being why has remain hidden ? Why did he leave behind no evidance of his existance? And even more confusing leave more evidence of him NOT existing and then throw us in flames for eternal torment for not believeing him ? If he does exist we have a mad man on charge and we should all be fearful of this lunitic . So send me to hell god because I would never follow you anyways

Several things come to mind starting with the concept of a god to begin with there are 507 different "gods" worshipped in this world today and thousands worshipped since the beginning of time. With so many to choose from which one is the right one to "pray" to is it the Catholic, Church of England, Buddha, Hindu, the trees, the sun there is a tribe on an island in the South Pacific that prays to a B-52 Bomber. But if I was an all powerful, all knowing, all merciful "god" I would certainly do away with the 506 others. Now this invisible man or being sees everything we do and hears everything we say and if we disobey any of his 10 "rules" he will condemn us to eternal fire, suffering, horrors, pain. But he loves us and needs money (thank you George Carlin). Another thing if the bible is the word of "god" what gave man the right to change it, Hmmm that don't make sense the Bible has been transcribed, rewritten, abridged, thousands of time depending who was king, pope, leader ETC.. it was originally written down by scribes hundreds of scribes and if one of them didn't copy it exactly as the original was written then every copy after that was wrong. BTW the original language of the bible was Aramaic (since that was the common language of the Middle East at the time) which was translated into Greek (but some Aramaic words did not translate so they were eliminated) then from Greek to Latin and again the same translation problem incompatible languages. and the same problems occurred when later the Greek or Latin books were translated into the different languages of the lands. But if there is a "god" My Bad looks like I made a mistake Like Bill Maher said well what do you know I was wrong

That segment of George Carlin's that you mentioned, is one of the funniest things I have ever seen!

if I'm wrong and there's a God I should just be judged on my actions not what I believe to be true. And let's face it I'm going to hell in every religion.

Me too!

Then I would hope he hasn't got such a fragile ego that he would understand those who doubt his existence.

Hes a jelous god tho. Dont forget that

1

I know many people who are absolutely convinced that they will go to heaven. If I had to spend eternity with most of them I think I'd be in Hell.

Hahaha. Thats right

I give the simple, short answer.... if I am wrong , than that fucker is going to have a lot to answer for when I get there....

Lmao . Yep he deffidently had some explaining to do

1

I guess that I would fall into your catagory! If there is a God and 'it' has allowed all your aboved mentioned things to take place or perpetuated them 'it's self...how much worse could it be? So easy to control humans, if you threaten them with, unimaginable suffering!! Wonder when that started? I don't believe that is in my DNA!

Exackly !

Before you can say if you believe in God or not - you must be very clear on the definition of God.

Even if god exists, religion is still a bunch of phony, baloney nonsense made up to control the disadvantaged.

What if they are wrong and realize they lived their lives in a closet to sacrifice their fun,
But then again, I know they are wrong and the what if is just wtf

I always say. What if you are wrong and Hindus are right or the buddhist maybe the Greeks were right. With that logic there are over 3000 gods that man have invented you better get to praying to all of them to cover your ass

When I die and if I find out that god exists he'll probably say " Steve I know you didn't believe in me but come on in anyway ".

Any "God" who tolerates a hell in his perfect creation is the keeper of that hell; i.e. the Devil. Whatever might exist that comes closest to being a God, no good atheist has cause to be afraid of it.

if you look at the bible the Devil doesn't really do anything but speak the truth

Friends of mine often beg me to hedge my bets in case there really is a hell, I have had people crying , trying to get me to believe in a god . I rather think that 'brown bread' really is 'dead ' and I am not going to reincarnate as then, what would be the point of births? We 'd be pretty overcrowded- I know I am not being logical I am just firing off - But I truly don't fear death, bring it on!

Ask them what the difference is between living in this hell that God has created where he lets little kids be born into starvation in India and allows earthquakes and cancer and poverty etc., and the hell they fear?

I been Wrong before.

So have I. I think it was on a Thursday... 😛 (I could be mistaken about that).

I don't believe in a heaven OR a hell. (Coincidentally while I was a Christian attending a number of different denomination's churches many of them insisted there was a heaven but no hell.) I also don't believe in an anthropomorphic deity. However, IF there was, I would not believe in a petty, tyrranical, punitive god. If god is supposed to be a model for morality then, as far as I'm concerned, there can't be a hell. As a seriously flawed human being I could not send people to the kind of hell describe in th bible or by Dante. If I can't, then a 'good' god should be utterly incapable of doing so. And to go one further, I see no reason why an anthropomorphic deity should represent the male rather than the female (as it was in the earliest religions).

In 'proper' Christianity hell doesn't exist. It is a construction of the Middle Ages. Dante's Divine Comedy is basically a commentary on characters and people from history and, according to their deeds, placing them in in the different levels of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven, framed by the then current (early C14th) medieval world view as expressed by the Catholic Church. For the first real expression of a geographical 'Hell' see The Myth of Er in Plato's Republic

I will be very surprised.

If it turned out that I was shown the proof that there actually is a decision-making being responsible for all that happens, I would be no closer to worshiping it than I am now, as a non-believer. I would consider it a monster.

I would want proof of what decisions it was actually making. Instead, all you get today are words designed to keep you away from this mythical being that is using such divine wisdom.

3

I have to say that most christians idea of heaven is a place I wouldn't want to spend five minutes, let alone eternity.

So of there is a god, they can send me to hell. The climate may be a little warm, but as Jim Gaffigen said, at least that's where all the hookers and blow will be.

Amen brother, lol

Just b/c I end up being wrong, doesn't necessarily mean that Christians got it right. What if the Jews are right, Jesus is a phony, not the Messiah...and Yahweh sends you to hell for worshiping a false god? What if the Muslims are right, still the same god of Abraham, Issac, and Joshua...but you worshiped Jesus, so to the eternal human BBQ for you! What if there is a god who's named Odin, or Zeus, or Osiris? How do you know Protestant Christianity is right and not Orthodox, Catholic, Restorationism or Nontrinitarianism (Mormon or Jehovah Witness)? How do you know there is a god and ALL our religions didn't get it completely wrong?

Even if some proof of a god can be provided, there is still a huge burden of proof left to be addressed that your interpretation is 100% correct and infallible to 1) prove he/she/it made a hell and 2) what do I have to do to avoid it. Following your religion just because mommy and daddy told you too, when you have never practiced any others to see if they better miracles and revelations, isn't just putting all your eggs in one basket. It seeing the other baskets, and without any reasoning or experimentation, determining they won't hold your eggs b/c they aren't real baskets to begin with.

Although I must say, most religious people I meet are 100% basket cases! 🙂

As I have posted elsewhere, there seems to be more evidence for more than one god than for one god. If god(s) exists then they've all got it wrong.

Something else you could ask them is What if your right and you found out that the god you worshipped, dedicated your whole life to, come to find out it wass a god but not the one you worshipped and he also is a jealous god and because they didn't worship him exclusively I guess they go to hell as well

I agree with your approach. Instead of arguing whether the christian god is good or bad, reply with the same question: what if you find out you picked the wrong god? I’m reminded of a South Park episode where they find themselves in a group of recently deceased and the angel announces that only one religion was correct and everyone else is going to hell.

I'd want nothing to do with the sadistic and irrational bastard. Mostly that's in the case of the Abrahamic god being the one we are hypothesizing to be real. I won't cover if it's Marduk, Ganesh, Mithra, Ra, Odin, Jupiter, or any of the thousands of others that man has also invented, just because I'm less familiar with their mythologies than I am with the Christian mythology. His offer to save us from eternal torture in a place of his creation smacks of narcissism and a truly diseased pattern of thought. No loving god would have created a place like that, nor would he insist on torturing people eternally for decisions made in an absolute vacuum of evidence to base those decisions on. Nor for the "crime" of taking his name in vain, or getting some work done on a particular day of the week. Allowing himself to get killed "for us" isn't really much of a sacrifice if he knows that he's god and he is going to come back to life after a couple days.

Since what they are offering you is a shortened version of Pascal's Wager, the most common response is that if there IS a god, there's no real way to know which one - the evidence supporting the existence of any one god is exactly as convincing as the evidence supporting every single one of the thousands of other gods: some kooky people wrote down some stories about a really powerful being that is in charge of some or all aspects of reality.

They can't all be right, since the overwhelming majority of them are mutually exclusive, so the better conclusion is that none of them are right.

What proof do you have that Odin is not the one true god? Whatever reason you can come up with is an equally good reason for me not believing in your god. If I've got to believe in something over a god, I'll pick reality - It's the only thing we know is there.

Well put, creationist would have us believe that the world was created by the wish of a magical Being 6000 years ago. But what about the dinosaurs that went extinct 6 million years ago or the fact that civilizations have been around for tens and thousands of years fossil records the fact scientist has proven that the Earth is more than a billion years old at least. Indeed we would have to deny reality to believe in any entity or deity.

I'm a Buddhist. So I know exactly what to do if I find myself in Hell. That is -- find someone carrying a big rock and say, "Let me carry that rock for you today, while you sit down and take a rest." Hell is a state of mind, not a physical location. Similarly, God is a projection of the human mind. Those qualities that we attribute to a god, love, peace, happiness, justice, truth, health, etc are qualities that we can nurture in our own minds.

Your post here is the ONE reason l say, If anybody has it right, the Buddhists are the closest.

I was told that "god" is quick to forgive. So if I am wrong I will ask for forgiveness because he created me to question things and hey, I got it wrong. However, it ain't something that keeps me up at night.

1

The funny thing is, there will never be a way to either prove or disprove God so it doesn't matter what anyone believes, it is what they do. You do not have to believe in God to be a good person, but you certainly can be a very bad person and say you believe in God. Right Donald Trump, et. al?
