Prostitution, how do you feel about it?

Should prostitution be legalized in your state? It's legal in some of the country's I've been to. Would it be a quick fix for those lonely people out there that can't seem to find a date or lover? Would it be such a problem in your mind to see others benefit from this service? Is it one of those unspeakable things that should be secretive? Do you think you would appreciate a date with a male or female stripper? Why not be happy one night a month? Just asking because there's no god to punish you. Is it ugly to you?

Get STDs, pregnancy, and rip offs out of the picture, and go for it.
I'm 75, and married, so I'm not even tempted, but during my years of 17-19, while I travelled to Mexico, Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines I enjoyed several commercial encounters, and they were all splendid, and important to my later life.

Legalize it. It's safer for those involved that way.

I think it shodl be legal, licensed, taxed and regulated. If that is done, there is realy no justification for keepign it illegal.

That beign said, I hve no desire to use a prostitue myself.

The state seems to set morality laws and ignores what a women wishes to use her body for. Personally i never indulged nor would wish to . If allowed should be controlled for medical reasons and clients list kept so they could be warned if a problem occured.

Prostitution should be legalized and regulated everywhere. Since Australia did that, the seedy parts of town were cleaned up, prostitututes moved into brothels and began getting medical exams, had guards to protect them them from violent clients, so both the women and their johns were safer, and divorces went down by 8%!

No, legal pot is enough here in Colorado. To many people have moved here just smoke pot legally. We don’t need anymore.

It's a free country. At least so far.: )

Prostitution ? Perfectly acceptable. These ladies are due more respect. Providing they entertain from a single institution, [ to protect them from possible adverse attention from the client ] and adhere to all questions of health for them both, they are providing an important service.
Apart from that, it is none of our business what folk choose to become employed.

I never had sex with clients when I was younger, thinner, and a part-time dominatrix. I never really understood why that had to be a hard limit if both of us were interested, and it would have easily increased my income.

Was this work that you wanted at the time? You chose this? I'm trying to understand something else: when you were a dominatrix, you had a hard limit (presumably from your boss/sugar daddy???) that you couldn't have sex with a client even though it would increase your income? That doesn't even make sense. Why would an employer limit earning potential? You didn't ask why?

@crazycurlz, the hard limit was from the dungeon, that would turn the work into prostitution instead of adult play, and the place would be shut down. And yes, I chose it, mostly to supplement my income. I've also done play as a submissive, both in learning and because I'm naturally a switch.

@TaraMarshall good answer... straight up... thanks.

@crazycurlz, oh, and Dominants DO NOT have sugar daddies... or mommies. That's a completely different market. I had clients who would pay for recreational scoldings that involved the physical realm. They wrote their limits, I abided by them. No permanent injury allowed, even if the client claimed to want it.

@TaraMarshall thanks for honest sharing and offering education. All new to me, of course. I'll be back when I have more time to consider what you've shared.

Tara.. just block those two ladies and do away wirh thier abuse.

@BucketlistBob, honest ignorance isn't abuse. The most stupid question is the one you don't ask.

@TaraMarshall ok... lol... I thought that too. Untill they attacked most my friends answers and tried to control the post.

@TaraMarshall Have you ever seen the film "Volere, Volare"?

@ailurophile, I don't really watch many movies. I like documentaries of science and nature, mostly.

I wish it was more affordable.

It would be if it was legal everywhere and more competitive. But then, like any other business, you would get what you pay for. Just ask any sport franchise owner.

@SassyLady l didn't preface it with anything. Pretty much everything and everyone is a commodity in a Capitalistic society. The only people who should go to jail are people who force other people into the trade. Having said all of that, l still wish it was less expensive.

@SassyLady, as I pointed out, I read your article in Mic. It is not without people who don’t agree. And like I said, the women are no more a commodity than anyone else who competes for your money. Pro sports figures risk life and limb to be the best, to increase their worth, those who are not as dedicated of talented get paid much less. If you are smart and motivated, you move up in a company and get paid accordingly. If you chose to be satisfied just doing your job, your pay will be less. This has nothing to do with women or men, it has to do with getting paid what you are worth for whatever you do. And maybe you can explain to me what these women who chose to work in the sex industry would do? At least if it is legal and regulated they have the possibility of some protection from exploitation. Nothing is perfect and there will be bad bosses in legal brothels just as there are in sewing factories. And there will be illegal prostitutes just as there is illegal drug dealers even where it is legal. But it makes it easier for the majority of people who wish to stay legal to be better taken care of.

I have always advocated that prostitution be legalized and regulated just like any other industry. It is providing a needed service, and the only reason it is stigmatized is because of "morals"; in other words, religion.

But it's not just men who could use them. They could provide a much needed service for women, too.

Its a Political Football which like legalizing marijuana which over 75% of Americans have experienced for more than one reason or another. Both have health benefits and cut down on STD's and yes it will reduce the crime rate. It's one of 45's best campaign promises and most of his Congressional Associates have been known to indulge in for needed services.

4

I'm not a fan of how prostitution has been demonized. I think it should be legal, everywhere.
No one should be forced into it, ever. However, those who freely choose to engage in prostitution
should not be penalized, nor should they be looked down upon. They should be legally protected and be subject to monthly medical assessments, for their own protection and for public health safety.
Legalization would also go a very long way to eliminate the need for abusive pimps.
There's a reason why it's called the "world's oldest profession". It serves a purpose.

No prostitution should be legal and safe.

Sex for me has always been personal. I'm not made to screw around...scratch the itch. I'm just not built that way.
But I'm aware of those who don't put too fine a point on it. And I think, in a perfect world, prostitution would be a perfectly legitimate endeavor.
But we don't live in a perfect world. Many of us are completely screwed up in the head over sex, whether it from parents or religion or previous experience/ignorance. The world of prostitution is ugly. There's no empathy, no respect and and a whole lot of objectification.
So there's my messed up answer on all fronts.....

Sexuality is part of being human. I should be available to all. If it were legal (as it is in Navada), it could be controled and the women could be protected against exploitatiion. Then, there are those of us like me who want nothing to do with marriage...just want sex upon occasion. We then would never get married, but still have the human experiance of sex.

4

I believe in free enterprise. Prostitutes are just selling a service.

3

I think it should be legal between consenting adults.

@Bairsdad I guess the customer would pay. I’m not sure how these things work. I guess other activities would be negotiated between the two making the exchange?

I'd be interested in a woman of this type. [newyorker.com]

Wow, this is great! Literary prostitution! LOL! Thanks for sharing.

No body is perfect. that is number one. if women want to sell their bodies, that is their business. but women will be abused in any situation. men must learn to respect womens bodies.

But, this is precisely the problem with prostitution. It's all about women pleasuring men. It's inherently sexist. I think arca2027 is on the right track...the countries that have legalized sex for sale, give it a job description, professionalize it, make it equal between genders. Arca2027 uses the term 'Sex Worker'. It's an alternative I'd be comfortable with.

@crazycurlz, sex worker encompasses a variety of jobs in the sexual domain, some of which are already legal (at least in many states) and those that are not (prostitution at this time is only legal in Nevada). Strippers, porn actors, even nude models are all considered sex workers. Obviously, with the Stormy Daniels event going on, it has brought sex work out of the proverbial closet. Hopefully it opens the door to more discussion and better representation in the women’s movement and in general to these people.

@SassyLady I am interested. TY!

@Barnie2years when I talk about sex workers, I'm not talking about continental US sex workers. I am referring to more balanced systems that function out of the US that consider both mens and womens needs. We are really screwed up in the US about prostitution

@SassyLady I did a quick review of your article. But, what is YOUR takeaway on this issue? Prostitution is terrible for women, not just for the prostitutes but, by association, ALL women. It appears that legalizing it into something equal, akin to Sex Workers would provide more protections and there still would be abuses. SassyLady, you appear to have some in-depth understanding of the direction this should take in order for people to be safe, men's lude behavior towards women to be demoted and how it can be transformed to a more equitable situation...cause it's clearly not going away. Can you give us a clear understanding of what works, what the best outcomes would be?

@SassyLady, I read the article and it is not cut and dried. While they have achieved some success, the total Swedish socio-economic model, as well as Norway and Denmark, is so different than the US, and even much of Europe, that a comparison of the way it might work outside that kind of environment would be difficult at best. Something to keep in mind: no matter whether it is legal, illegal or they arrest the sex worker or the client, there will always be women willing to sell the use of their bodies and men willing to pay for it. The difference, just like drugs, or alcohol during prohibition, when it’s illegal it opens itself to the worst elements and even worse abuse. Legal isn’t perfect, but with proper support and enforcement, it’s better than nothing.

Nothing wrong with it in the least, and what other people choose to do is strictly their business. If that is how someone wants to make their living, they should be able to without worry of getting tossed in jail. I personally would have no interest in patronizing prostitutes, especially knowing how easy it is these days to hookup via social media and the web, it's easy to find local women for even a one night stand. On the flip side of that, and not to divulge any dark secrets here, but I feel the way I do on prostitution and strippers because I one time was involved in a related situation, except I wasn't the patron...

3

I question how many women want to be prostitutes vs being forced to be a prostitute. I wouldn't want it to be legal if force is the primary reason for prostitution.

Force would ideally no longer be a factor if it were legalized. And it would be for male prostitutes, too--don't forget we women have needs just like men do. 🙂

3

It's legal in the Netherlands. It's very highly regulated. As it is in Nevada.

I think it is a very personal choice to be in that profession, no different than being a sex performer in pornography. But people have to do it of their own free will.

2

I've been in relationships with a prostitute/ex prostitute/prostitute to be. My Ex used to be in a long term relationship with a transexual prostitute and some of my male friends have/are prostitutes. Thor! That sounds like I know a lot of prostitutes.

Most of us pay for it one way or another. Cash just cuts through the charade 🙂

2

To be honest it’s a XXI century, people can do whatever they want to do with their bodies as long as they’re not forced to do it

2

People will always find ways to get what they want, even if it goes around the law. Drugs, sex, gambling, and more things alike are illegal (for the most part) yet people still find ways to access them. Legalizing and regualting these things could reduce the size and expense of prisons as well as enhance the quality of the systems and increase safety.
