They used god to validate their greed and lust for power. It would have happened even without religion. The Romans did it, Genghis Khan did it, but they were just more honest about their motive of world dominion.

Exactly! They just use their religion to justify their actions. Easy, isn't it?
@pamagain it just "sounds better" to say that "God gave this land to me," than to say, "Our country is stronger than yours, we want your land, and we are going to take it."
Going on a medieval crusade? Make it a holy war instead of a war to capture the riches of the Mideast.
