Why do many folks here put pictures of anything other than themselves in their profile?

Paul4747 comments on Jul 30, 2018:
"Sources tell us". Like who? What sources? Agreed it's a bizarre story, if it happened as written. But consider this "magazine" also features an article on "how the 2016 election was rigged", apparently to throw the election to Trump... https://www.veteranstoday.com/2018/07/29/how-the-2016-us-election-was-rigged/ a rigged election "just like in 2000 and 2004." Say what? This article is written using mined quotes to give the appearance of massive vote fraud, for instance linking to an article in The Nation, and quoting the first line of the story of an elderly man turned away from the polls- but not mentioning his ultimate success in voting. It even gives the title of the Nation piece as "Republicans Rig Election", when the real title is "*Did* Republicans Rig The Election?" It links to opinion pieces as if they were authoritative reports. Most of all, it ignores the established *fact* that the exit polls were simply wrong, because many who voted for Trump lied to the pollsters- especially women. That's why Trump's was such an upset victory on Election Day when the votes were actually counted. I despise Trump as much as the next man, if the next man isn't Sean Hannity- but this is ridiculous stuff. This is not a trustworthy source. It is biased; it is not journalism. I hesitate to give it the proud title of "hack reporting". And I don't buy anything this "Veteran's Today" has to say, about anything.

I have the cross necklace my ex gave me for Xmas one year. Also a Hammer of Thor necklace. And an Elder Sign (H P Lovecraft) amulet on a beautiful chain that I picked up from the game store way back when, to protect against critters from the Necronomicon, just in case. These are all works of art, and I'm not getting rid of them, despite not believing in any of them.

First Russian hack for 2018 election? [vox.com]
Paul4747 comments on Jul 29, 2018:
In context, Trump's "Based on the fact that no President has been tougher on Russia than me, they will be pushing very hard for the Democrats. They definitely don’t want Trump!" is either pathological self-delusion, or pathological lies. My problem is, I can't tell which. Does he really belief the bullshit that he spews? Or does he just fool himself during the time his lips (or fingers) are moving? Or does he count on his followers not even checking any source besides his shitstorm of tweets? Probably the latter. He knows that his loyalists want to believe the world is the way he tells them it is, because he reinforces their own prejudices.

Paul4747 comments on Jul 29, 2018:
That's a hell of a question, who the fuck do you think you are? I swear more at work than anywhere else. I have a slightly more abrasive personality there. I recall a fellow officer who was at dinner with his wife and another couple. The subject of his work in corrections came up. The other husband asked, "Do you know (name of mutual acquaintance)?" Without hesitation he replied, "Yeah, I know that dick-eating bitch." The mutual acquaintance had been best man at the other couple's wedding. ? After that my friend was banned from social occasions for a year. Best part of the story is the other guy's wife. She just said, "I knew there was a reason I didn't like that guy. "

Paul4747 comments on Jul 29, 2018:
"Don't settle" isn't the same thing as "don't compromise". Obviously I'd love to meet and get involved with someone with the looks and mind of Natalie Portman (Semi-finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search competition in high school. Studied neuroscience and psychology at Harvard University. Attended graduate school at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Fluent in Hebrew; has studied Japanese, Arabic, French, and German. Has the same ErdÅ‘s–Bacon number as Carl Sagan, Reported IQ of 140) and who happens to live in the next apartment block. Well, pretty clearly that's unlikely to happen. So who I'm interested in, is someone as smart as or smarter than me (not hard to find), someone funny, someone warm, someone who can communicate, someone who has no problem expressing feelings and affection, someone who wants physical contact and physical love. Someone who knows what she wants, and wants those things with me. That's the bottom line and what I won't "settle" about. The compromise part comes in when you realize that you meet people from all over in the world today, with online dating and so on. I just had coffee this weekend with someone who lives a 3 hour round trip away. We had a lot of fun meeting. We had been chatting for a few weeks already, and we have a lot in common as far as our desires for someone to be close to, for physical affection. If it turns out we really hit it off, I'm going to have to do a lot of traveling. I can do that. I can compromise having someone there all the time, for the quality of the time that I do get.

I drink heavily. KIDDING!!! Someone told me something this year that I really took to heart. I messaged a person I didn't expect to reply, feeling like she was out of my league, as they say... not only did she reply, but we had a really successful date. She told me, "You underrate your attractiveness." If ever I wonder about myself, I just think back to those words. I really am quite a catch, I guess. Why would she lie? And then I think about how I look at other people, and how they see themselves. It's the exact same phenomenon. I see women in a very positive way, and they're so often critical of themselves. Not just looks, but personality, intelligence, humor. We are our own harshest critics. We look at ourselves in the worst possible light, looking for the flaws. Others often see our perfections. It's hardest for those of us who haven't had positive people around us. We have to learn new habits. But it can be done.

Asking someone else to pay for your crimes is moral cowardice. We mere humans would never accept the idea that someone could go to prison in place of another, serving the sentence for something they did. The only reason Xians accept this system is that they also believe in a tyrannical, incredibly unjust God person whose retribution for the most minor infraction is eternal torture.

What is the difference between faith and belief?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 28, 2018:
Let's put it like this: "I *believe* I left the oven on." That makes sense as a sentence. "I have *faith* that I left the oven on." That makes no sense. It's easier to illustrate the difference than to define it. A belief is usually based on some kind of rational evidence. Faith is based on no evidence whatsoever.
I ve been thinking about the concept of online dating.
Paul4747 comments on Jul 28, 2018:
What I think, is probably going to help you very little if at all. We're different individuals and our experiences shape us very differently. Your marriage ended in heartbreak, for which I'm truly sorry; the end of mine was a renewal for me. You look at online dating as a distraction, for me it's a resource. I'm mortified for you by the oaf who thought that recognizing you from an online profile gave him the right to follow you and annoy you in public. The first person I met and dated from an online profile now works at my neighborhood pharmacy. That could be awkward, considering we had just two dates and then she ghosted me... and now if she wanted she could have a lot of confidential information about me. But I just don't think about it. We greet each other politely, I pick up my scrips, and move on. I prefer dating sites as opposed to hoping to meet someone randomly. Theoretically, everyone on a dating site is single and looking for a date. It makes it easier. I don't like hanging out in bars and restaurants by myself. I don't strike up conversations with strangers very easily. Ladies don't approach me. Except on dating sites. Good luck, whatever you do. And please do stick around. This isn't really a dating site, as much as a discussion site where singles tend to hang out. ;)

Why sexual desire is objectifying – and hence morally wrong | Aeon Ideas
Paul4747 comments on Jul 27, 2018:
No, this is a line of bull. For one thing, your speculation that prostitutes have sex without objectification is off base. Objectification is *all* it is; they don't care who the person is that's involved, as long as the price was right. Sexual desire *can* be objectifying, when it's about someone you have little or no emotional connection with. But the more emotion is involved, the more sex is about *that particular person*, her or his body, not just *this* body here which happens to be in front of you. Unless you (or Kant) are a very detached person, never getting emotionally involved in what you're doing, and *have to* objectify the person in front of you. Or are afraid to get emotionally involved. I suggest that Kant had some real problems in this area.

These guys blame "snakes on the crew"... in other words, you're supposed to keep your mouth shut and not report violations of the Code of Conduct. I know this all too well. I've been called a "snitch" and a "rat" myself, for answering investigators honestly and refusing to cover up for fellow officers who hung *themselves* out to dry with their actions. Actions which jeopardize *me* and other good cops, by sacrificing professionalism in the name of "just having fun". You want to have fun on the job? Read a Dilbert comic. Their story is bullshit. These guys were involved in sexual harassment, they got caught, and they got fired. Those who supposedly resigned "in protest" were probably next on the chopping block. Although, to be fair, we don't know that... they *could* have been taking a principled stand in favor of workplace sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. I'm still throwing the "bullshit" flag, though.

Paul4747 comments on Jul 26, 2018:
There's a reason we don't use Roman numerals for mathematics. It's because the Arabs had a far superior number system, including the concept of "0"... not to mention the invention of algebra. Throughout the Dark and Middle Ages they preserved much of the knowledge of Europe which the Christian church deemed heretical and destroyed, that is those parts which weren't looted by Viking invaders. Many Muslim caliphs and sultans were men of wide learning and knowledge, including preserving the knowledge of ancient Greece (which we in the West now claim as our heritage). This knowledge was re-imported to Spain and Sicily during the high Middle Ages (the time of Muslim conquests in Europe), and hence onto the rest of the continent. Astronomy, sciences, medicine, and gunpowder (brought from China) are just a few of the other innovations taught to Europe by the Islamic world, which was on the cutting edge at that time. Without the Arab culture, Europe and the West would likely never have evolved into its current form. This is just one example of the history you should learn, before you start touting the "eternal superiority" of your own culture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_of_the_Greek_Classics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_world_contributions_to_Medieval_Europe

Did anyone else go through the stages of Atheism?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 25, 2018:
Where are you getting these stages from? I was never truly religious, so I never worried about "eternal consequences", as I never truly believed in an eternity. Socially, my family didn't give me much comeuppance other than friction with me ex as I stopped going to church even for token appearances. Even before becoming an atheist, I railed against stupidity in religion, so nothing there. I treated religion as a metaphor for an eternal mystery, not a literal or historical truth. I still don't see how religion helps people cope, it pulls blinders over their eyes and gives them a false sense of moral superiority. Most of those who supposedly follow this code, in fact just pay it lip service and then go about their business. They're hypocrites. Furthermore, most dictate that all other religions are false and their followers must be converted, so at the core religion encourages war in the name of a fictional God. This far outweighs the acts of charity which could equally well be done for secular reasons. And don't get me started on televangelists.

Jesus, who works over at the club on weekends, mixing drinks? Normally I don't swing that way, but he is an attractive guy... maybe it's time to give it a whirl after all...
The phrase, "I could care less" is meaningless and should die. Why do I keep hearing people say it?

Are you a Selfish Lover?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 24, 2018:
Ladies first. Every gentleman should know and live by this. I'm happiest making my partner happy. When it's magical is when both partners are looking out for each other's happiness. When you learn to give and take. If I have a partner who is happy making me happy, then I get happy, and want to make her happy, and... you see where this is going.
I just had this discussion with a fellow member.

(Edited)Proof that God doesn't exist?

You can't prove the non-existence of God. God is possible. Highly unlikely, almost completely impossible, and yet still possible.

Sexual Compatibility - How better to phrase it?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 24, 2018:
That would be a more useful question. One of the few things I liked about OK Cupid was the various questions that you could read (if people answered them, anyway) and see if a potential match was into similar things. Assuming they were honest, anyway. And the people who didn't answer any of them... I tended to avoid, because I'm not shy about those questions. Not after the first date anyway. Hell, I met my first girlfriend at an Xmas party by asking, in a bored moment, "So.... you into leather?" By the end of the party we were necking on the sofa. So, yeah, not shy about those questions.
So something has been bothering me the past couple of days.
Paul4747 comments on Jul 24, 2018:
How is being open and honest about your marriage and your desires for further friendship, and possible dating beyond that, "manipulative" in any way? It sounds like someone wanted more from you than you were ready for, got jealous, and decided that it was your fault for not reciprocating. Too many men think that "open to meeting" is the same thing as "guaranteed to have sex". Well, guys, it's not.... any more than my being open to meeting women means that I'm going to hop into bed with anyone who messages me and comes out to dinner. (Although, let's be realistic, AdorkableMe has a lot better odds of someone wanting that than I do.) You keep doing what you're doing. A lot of people still don't understand and aren't equipped to handle poly relationships. Honestly, I would probably be one of them, although in an ideal world I would give it a try if the right people came along. Good luck :)
Naked photos- what do you think?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 24, 2018:
I wouldn't lead with that picture. I wouldn't even do shirtless unless that had been discussed, better yet requested. (I know what I look like without a shirt, I know not everyone thinks it's a good look. Tastes vary. Lucky for me.) I've never had anyone send me a picture of herself in something revealing the very first pic. Maybe soon after, but not the very first. What would my reaction be if someone did? Probably I would think "She's very forward" (which I like, personally) "and very eager" (ditto) but also, the back of my mind would wonder, "*why* so eager?" I'm slightly paranoid by trade, and that approach would probably put me on my guard... why is she throwing herself at me this way? Now, we men do throw ourselves at women sometimes, we wish women wanted to see us naked as much as we want to see them naked, and while that may be true in person, it's not the case with pictures texted on a phone. Right? So maybe he really hoped you would be impressed, and I guess you were... but at the same time, he doesn't seem to get the fact that it was much too soon. A mixed bag at best, someone to be cautious about. That's my take, anyway.

GUYS, I have being taught, that the more a guy chases you, the more he is going to want you.
Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
It works both ways. I was in a long distance chat prior to my divorce with someone in Colorado of all places, we thought we really clicked, we were looking forward to the day when I would be free to talk on the phone more than once a week, we could finally meet in person, etc... finally freedom came, and the chat dried up, the phone calls became perfunctory, and I realize now that she didn't really want to "catch" me. The closer it came to us actually meeting the more she pulled back.

Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
At what point does it cease being worth the effort to keep chasing and chasing, if there's no sign that you're ever going to let yourself get "caught"? I don't want to spend months or years after someone who lets me get closer and closer, without rewarding my effort and devotion. That's just frustrating. Sooner or later, I'm going to get tired of running after a person and either give up or flat out ask, is this going anywhere? or is it just a game? Because I don't like games. If you want someone, just be straightforward and say so. Do something about it. Life is too fucking short to play games.

What you're saying is, don't trust the media unless it agrees with you. The mainstream is the mainstream for a reason; it has the most resources, it's most reliable, and it checks its sources. I'm extremely dubious (not to mention suspicious) of anyone claiming to have found "the hidden truth" all by themselves, for the world to see. That's the stuff of great fiction and mythology, but not real life. Woodward and Bernstein uncovered Watergate because they had a huge staff of researchers and assistants and editors backing them up. That's how investigative journalism works. Not a lone wolf reporter who knows The Truth Is Out There.
The Burden Of Proof Is On The Russiagaters [caitlinjohnstone.com]
Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
There's a point at which skepticism is justified, and then one at which it's skepticism for the sake of skepticism. Multiple indictments have been issued in this case. Guilty pleas have been taken. It's safe to say the burden of proof is being met. And it's also completely fair to ask, what's your alternate scenario? If not Russia, who? At some point, if you just go on rejecting evidence, you have to come up with a theory of your own that fits the facts.

Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
Is "progressive enthusiasm" another phrase for "far left wackiness" like Abdul El-Sayed here in Michigan? Candidates whose positions are so far to the Left that, although they can win a primary, have no chance of winning a general election. We don't need that. We need centrist candidates who have broad appeal, not just to Democrats.

I don't know. Has he come out and actually apologized for the decades of the church covering up and condoning child abuse (why mince words- it was rape)? Has he promoted women to the clergy? Has he gone about dissolving the massive wealth of the Vatican Bank and the Church as a whole and making it a tool to help the needy, or is the Catholic Church still just a money machine? Has he overturned the Church's ridiculously antiquated opposition to birth control, which is especially hurtful to those poor he professes to care about the most? Until these steps are taken, I don't see how his "modernization" is any more than cosmetic. Beyond which, I don't believe in his God, obviously.
Be Careful What You Wish For: Trump’s Tax Plan Has Led To Churches Facing Taxes - The ...
Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
“The whole idea of tax exemption for nonprofit organizations that are doing charitable, religious and educational work is... to incentivize the good work they do to make our society better." Well, that's a massive assumption, isn't it? Whether they're doing "good" work is a subjective judgment. That's been the problem all along with the tax-exempt status. I don't agree that churches agitating to outlaw choice and de-fund Planned Parenthood, for example, are making our society better. I feel as if they ought to pay taxes like any other special interest group.

I was once threatened by a young bloke in a dark side street in Glasgow. He thought his pocket knife was some kind of trump card. I explained to him that he wasn't anywhere near as frightening as he thought, and the risk of having every bone in his skinny body broken wasn't worth the 20 quid in my pocket. He thought it over, performed a risk assessment, said "See you, Jimmy!" and went the other direction. They weren't used to dealing with Americans in those days, I guess.
