Yes! My favorite Hitchens quote:
"Religion poisons everything."

a man with an open mind, morals and intellect - a fine combination

Right here. I've read many of his works including one published last March: "The Four Horsemen: The Conversation That Sparked an Atheist Revolution". I actually just finished reading it yesterday. It's a transcript of a conversation in 2007 between Hitchens, Dawkins, Dennett, and Harris.

@ToolGuy Yes, the book's foreword (written by Stephen Fry) specifically talks about the YouTube video and its impact.

Yes by Stephen Fry. Loved it!

Very eloquent and courageous defender of Atheism … unfortunately he condoned the American war on Iraq.

I am a fan of his ideas on religion and God, but I really disliked his opinions on Iraq and invading the Middle East. I went to a forum in Manhattan in my early 20s where he and a few others spoke on the issue and I couldn't stand him in that arena with those opinions.

Hitch was great!

Yes read his book "god is not great". He calls a spade a spade. He most certainly made an impact (imprint) in argument for reason.

Asking if any one is a fan of Christopher Hitchens on an Agnostic site, is kind of like asking, "hey, so who likes breathing".
Just kidding.
yes, Iv'e been a fan of his since back in the 90's. His book, "God is NOT Great" is one of my favorite reads.

I enjoyed his literate and smart-assed style. I liked his quick wit and ability to always have a knowledgeable response in debates. Sometimes though I think he was unreasonably mean spirited and a bit of a misogynist.

Agree 👍

Arrogant and mean-spirited considering who he was refuting and/or debating, most of them professional apologists of organized religion, was not only understandable, it was absolutely appropriate and necessary. It exposed them as transparently shallow thinkers and lacking a firm, intellectually defendable foundation. By reciting the same old lies, and having them shown to be flimsy nonsense, they deserved to have Hitchens tear them apart.
THEY were the arrogant ones, insisting their majority position was beyond challenge, and so were imminently worthy of contempt and ridicule.

@Storm1752 I wasn't suggesting he was mean-spirited to his debate opponents. Actually he always seed gracious toward them. His life was more than debates, and he wans't always the nicest guy.

Raises hand.

hitchens supported the iraq war, in which 100s of thousands of innocent civilains were killed under false pretenses; which wasn't really a war just an attack by the most powerful country the world has ever known on a small country of 20,000,000 ppl. a war which left that population, which was once the most prosperous in the ME, reduced to horrible living conditions.
personally i'm glad the phony SOB died a slow painful death.

I am getting really tired of the people that hate him because of his support for that war. You would think he was the commander in chief, and decided by himself to destroy the country. His support or lack thereof had no impact whatsoever on the commencement or continuation of that war.

And for you to express joy at any human being's suffering tells me you are a real vile moron. You are a fuckwit, attacking a dead person who would have verbally and intellectually torn you to shreds in seconds if he was here to defend himself. Fuck off, and when you get there, fuck off again.

@Corden ,
wow! what a brilliant retort.

@Corden I have to somewhat agree with you. After 9-11, the majority, including myself, felt war was an appropriate reaction. Now we know better. Hingsight and such.

At this point in the timeline, with that clear view of hindsight, it's quite hypocritical to look down on anyone who felt it a reasonable option at the time.

And to celebrate the suffering of another human being? Really?

@NoelleSmith ,
if you believed all the BS/propaganda about WMD then you're just one of the millions of brainwashed americans who have lost the ability to think.

and you felt war was an "appropriate reaction". so you were OK with killing all those innocent iraqi civilians that were never, ever a threat to the US. weren't they human beings? now, that's callous.

@NoelleSmith, @Corden ,
this is a good forum and an excellent feature is the ability to block raving imbeciles.

bye, bye, dumbass.

That's rather harsh...yes Hitchens was unaccountably WAY OFF on the Iraq war, but even geniuses like him can be occasionally wrong. It DOES boggle the mind HOW wrong he was.

@Storm1752 ,
i don't think he was in the genius category.
but, you're right my comment was a little harsh. but then when you think of how many innocent iraqis suffered horrible deaths it almost makes a case for karma.

@callmedubious "believed all the BS/propaganda about WMD"? No, because immediately after the twin towers fell, there was no talk of WMD... just a large gaping emotional wound over the entire country. And lots of anger. And grieving. And desire for justice in the form of retribution. A very normal human response.

And not to mention, lots of media footage of Arabs in the streets of numerous Arab countries worldwide, celebrating at our "demise".

It was what it was.

The WMD propaganda came quite a bit afterwards, as we were all coming back to our senses, in an effort to keep the war funded.

I now see you are not even in the US. You're Canadian. How cozy it is to judge from the sidelines.

Here. I learned of him by reading 'God is not Great'. It was like seeing my own thoughts in the intro. The ending of chapter about religions of Orient is masterpiece.

Only a lot, lol!

Do you know any vids on his debates? I would like to see this man in action.

Check out YouTube...filled with them.

I love/d him. He was my rockstar. I loved him in debates.

He reminded me of a dog with a toy in it's mouth, when they sink their teeth into it and shake it back and forth. That was how he was in some debates. Turned the opposition into rag dolls. They didn't stand a chance.

Miss him.

I admire how he could maintain an argument while drunk, but actually don't have much use or fandom for proffessional athiests.

I agree with his arguments against religion except for he was often arrogant and vulgar.

ABack Level 6 July 3, 2019

I love arrogant and vulgar.

@Seeker3CO We're in agreement.
You've seen my posts.

😉

@Seeker3CO Awwwww, shucks.
Thank ya. Thank ya, vurry much.

@KKGator
I can overlook or even enjoy arrogance and vulgarity as long as they are used in the service of truth and progress. However, if it is like what we hear so often from our current President (ignorant, mendacious, reactionary, bigoted, stupid) then it wears thin very quickly. It's all about context.

@Flyingsaucesir I was referring specifically to Mr. Hitchens.
45 can go fuck himself. He is vile.

@KKGator
Roger dat.

I was in my "angry towards the establishment" phase of my life. I've grown past that now. Many paths to one place.

As a hardcore atheist, I enjoy reading his works or listening to him on YouTube on occasion.
