Arrogant and mean-spirited considering who he was refuting and/or debating, most of them professional apologists of organized religion, was not only understandable, it was absolutely appropriate and necessary. It exposed them as transparently shallow thinkers and lacking a firm, intellectually defendable foundation. By reciting the same old lies, and having them shown to be flimsy nonsense, they deserved to have Hitchens tear them apart.
THEY were the arrogant ones, insisting their majority position was beyond challenge, and so were imminently worthy of contempt and ridicule.

I am getting really tired of the people that hate him because of his support for that war. You would think he was the commander in chief, and decided by himself to destroy the country. His support or lack thereof had no impact whatsoever on the commencement or continuation of that war.

At this point in the timeline, with that clear view of hindsight, it's quite hypocritical to look down on anyone who felt it a reasonable option at the time.

That's rather harsh...yes Hitchens was unaccountably WAY OFF on the Iraq war, but even geniuses like him can be occasionally wrong. It DOES boggle the mind HOW wrong he was.

And lots of anger. And grieving. And desire for justice in the form of retribution. A very normal human response.

And not to mention, lots of media footage of Arabs in the streets of numerous Arab countries worldwide, celebrating at our "demise".

It was what it was.

The WMD propaganda came quite a bit afterwards, as we were all coming back to our senses, in an effort to keep the war funded.

I can overlook or even enjoy arrogance and vulgarity as long as they are used in the service of truth and progress. However, if it is like what we hear so often from our current President (ignorant, mendacious, reactionary, bigoted, stupid) then it wears thin very quickly. It's all about context.
