@OldMetalHead In BDSM world safe words are supposed to be something so incongruous that there can be no doubt why someone would say it... eg youre doing your thing with your partner, hot and heavy, and s/he says "mollusk", it means something is wrong, stop immediately. There is no gray area. Also using the words "green/yellow/red" to describe comfort level, is pretty common, especially when people are just getting to know each other, exploring limits. At a higher level, some people like that "consensual non consent" thing where they pretend to have zero control, but those sorts of relationships take months or years to build. They take a great deal of insight and responsibility, and are never stuff you just do for fun at a party with a new partner.

It was a clear blunder if the supposed "misunderstood man" thought that type of behavior was appropriate with someone he was "having fun with at a party" with, and an even bigger condemnation, from a BDSM perspective, that he would take his position as someone with strength and control over another human, and use it to hurt them. He wasnt prepared for the responsibility he would have need to have for that type of play, instead he abused another person in order to get his rocks off, and called it BDSM. Another community he'll be excluded from.

@OldMetalHead I don't get any of this and would never do it. I'm also not into sex games. As a kid doctor and nurse was an excuse to experiment, but I grew up. I like David Silverman and agree with his views on atheism. As for sex, he pretty much sealed it all when he told her "she could not say no to him." Some call that rape. In this case the double standard of "MeToo" nailed him and did him in.
