HOLY TRIGGERED, BATMAN!

I cannot believe how outraged some atheists get when they see someone using the word spiritual. I recently used the word spiritual in a post...however this is not the first time I've set someone off over the usage of this word, and honestly it's comical at this point. I can't speak for others but when I (very rarely) use the word "spiritual" I am NOT using it as a religious or biblical term. I think of it more so under "pagan" terms in reference to the feeling of awe and wonder of nature. It's a feeling of connection and oneness with the universe...I mean we are made of star stuff. We DO share genes with all living things. Stop getting your panties in a wad over the usage of the term "spiritual"...there are worse words being used out there.

Shows you the power of language, doesn't it. Wield that sword lightly and precisely!

Well said!!

I honestly couldn't give a fuck if someone catches feelings about what I consider myself to be. People need to worry about their own religion (or lack of one) and stop trying to be all up in everyone else's.

4

I like to think of it in terms of Adlerian psychology and how community is used. Just being a part of the greater whole of society. Like the spirit of a home football game. There is momentum that announcers talk about. That's spirituality. It doesn't have to be a higher power.

Why do you say bless you to someone after they sneeze? Because it's polite. No need to be jerks because someone's belief system doesn't match yours. Makes them no better than evangelical asshats.

It's not a word I like or use for myself, but I know it's used by atheists to mean something unrelated to theism. Everyone who uses it has his/her/their own definition of the word and I understand what they mean. That is all that matters.

4

Even though I avoid using that word, I understand why it is sometimes used by atheists. It does seem at times that it is the only word available to convey what one is feeling.

Unfortunately, no group is free of assholes.

3

You needn't justify your choice of words. Applies to some, but not all. Say what you want, and try not to let other people's reactions get to you. Be free !

Yes be free!!! Use any word to mean anything you want!! But don’t expect us who respect the use of correct language to accept what you say, let alone understand it!!

@Rodatheist Then you can see that as the downside to freedom of speech. Not everyone is as perfect as you seem to be.

@evergreen Perfection is an asymptotic goal to which some of us aspire with quotidian fervor.

I consider myself spiritual although I'm an atheist... Spiritual means peace of mind through nature ... Just like you said...

I take it that you have not checked the dictionary either.

@Rodatheist the dictionary records words that are commonly used... There are many slang words in the dictionary that were commonly used before being in the dictionary... New words and definitions are added with every new edition.. The origin of many of the words come from the people... It's only a recording device...

@Cutiebeauty When slang is widely used, it becomes part of the general convention and is inserted in the dictionary. The word “Spiritual” has precise meanings in the dictionary. All other uses of the word are slang and they have not been widely accepted yet, leading to confusion and imprecise communication. You can dismiss the dictionary, but you do so at the peril of your own general culture and education. The dictionary is not just a recording device, it is the contract we all subscribe to in order to communicate clearly and precisely. Being in this forum, don’t you expect members to communicate to you in a way that is clear and don’t lead you in a wild chase for meanings that are not?

@Rodatheist OK, from what you wrote here, it seems as though you agree with exactly what I said.. If the definition of spiritual, used in this thread, becomes common, then it will be added to the other definitions of spiritual...

@Cutiebeauty Exactly, so you see, it is not just a recording device. If a term becomes part of the agreement and I don’t know it, the dictionary will help me keep current with my fellow speakers.

You know people are just cruel normal . Its no big deal you know .

3

Spirituality is a term that means different thing to individuals based on their own experience and views on the subject. Before a conversation on the subject can be meaningful, a common definition of the term needs to be established. I tend go avoid using the term for this reason.

Your definition sounds like one I could agree with. It sounds very similar to the religious reference Einstein used to make that caused confusion of his religious beliefs.

3

LOL It sounds to me like they take their Atheism as a religion and therefore they are offended.

Nothing is more stupid than considering Atheism a religion.. God help us .. lol.

I got a nice reply for a comment earlier. I read your remark again . ( Numerous times now). You Sir/ Madam. ( Gender. Must respect.bzzz). Is hilarious. To think people take Atheism to somewhere that is offensive to the general subscribers. Surely noone can be that ... Well. Lost.... I felt Tucker Carlsons revulsion once . An actual Atheists society.. ( wankers) . Wanted a cross removed.. Why.. ? The aforementioned wanking . . I guess..

3

I've been damn near crucified for using that word.

Don't let any Romans come over then!

@creative51 Then they are neighbors. Or zombies.

@creative51

Your use of a great pun has not gone unnoticed.. It doesn't matter how many virtue signalling , self absorbed beings continue to try & make it so.... Words do not equal violence..

3

Relax some people are very sensitive about theism, spiritual is a common word unfortunately used by thesist a lot to describe religious beliefs

"Being Spiritual" is a very confusing word to me. I really do not know what that really means. People can make it mean anything they want.

2

Most famous people throughout human history worked science and spiritual very successfully. It is Religious abuse has given spiritual a bad name. So Atheist will only see what they want to see and do what they want to do to this great unknown word of spiritual.

Yes, just a sheer metion of spiritual, drives them MADD. Kind of like mentioning dinosaurs to Christains with dating them.

2

The same goes for anytime something slightly negative is said about another Atheist (particularly a famous one). I was pounced upon for simply asking if Ricky Gervais (one of my all time favorite comedians. I have such appreciation for his poignant Atheists viewpoints) was contradicting himself in a vid. Now to voice an opinion as to the subject matter is one thing. But to be lacerated for just posing the damn question was nothing more than a grade school temper tantrum. Jesus you would have thought I was trying to take their rights away. Atheists do make mistakes. They are not perfect. They can contradict themselves.

2

Your not alone i use the word but it has the same meaning as u just said

2

Paganism is a religion. Pretty much proving the point that you're using it in a religious sense.

It could have slightly different shaded meanings for other people.

But the basic concept is a religious one.

Perhaps a thesaurus? 😉

I hear spiritual I hear "Woo".

Paganism is not a religion. The word Pagan was used by Christians in a derogatory way to describe those not following the Christian religion and is derived from the Roman term for countryman or villager, although they probably did practise some form of animist religion.

@Moravian @BohoHeathen I'm using dictionary terms here: [google.com]

@RavenCT As Bohoheathen says it is a very general term and since it was first coined by Christians I prefer the original meaning of countrydweller or villager so I am a Pagan Yippee !!

@Moravian Um I'm not going to argue semantics except to say - would you say that about Catholicism? lol

@RavenCT Since you used a capital C I presume you are referring to the Roman Catholic church which is definitely a religious organisation.

@Moravian Widely accepted definitions - which don't just imply but state - religion.

Also that was a capital P I used in Paganism... in case you couldn't tell.

Sadly humans will consult the dictionary when puzzled. (Particularly humans who worked for a Newspaper.). We take language seriously.

@RavenCT I'm not trying to pick a fight with you and agree that language should be taken seriously.
I intensely dislike the Roman Catholic church and all it stands for and always like to give the organisation it's proper title.

@Moravian There's only one kind of Catholicism. I was raised in it. I know. 😉

@RavenCT [catholiceducation.org]

Well they would say that wouldn't they but of course they do not have a monopoly.

@Moravian If you're going to go to alt resources you will find alternate meanings - once again I'm using a standard dictionary.
Language can be imprecise enough without shading it at every turn.

Any atheist worth his/ her salt . Should not by any means get triggered or offended or even slightly miffed by any phrase or passages in the Bible . It's like a Vegan killing 20 piglets to prove that piglets squeal when stabbed. We know that already. Atheists who make noises condemning Christians. Are an embarrassment. Leave the God fearing alone. It's almost as Cringey as Satanists. . To believe in Satan, means you believe in God ..
Another pet peeve, is those wanting to destroy Christmas. Why? ... Please think of the children..

I must admit I used to be one of them. Not so bad that I condemned christmas but I did have a verile, agressive attitiude towards relgion as a reuslt of being exposed to its horrors. A knee jerk reaction if you will. However I realised that to be better than them means not acting like them. I did not want my atheism to become a religion.

Also attacking christmas seems a bit daft. Most people it would appear don't care about the religious side of it. I loved Christmas as a kid, I would not want to take that away from them. I might however neglect to mention its real origins!!!!!!

I personally don’t like bible verses quoted to myself, so I try and be as respectable as possible, but still honest with my feelings. I still love the winter solstice aka Christmas and celebrate it with my family. Religion is not a part of my life and having good relationships with friends and family is far more important. I may discuss or joke about religion or religious beliefs with other atheists, but I’d never attack anyone or make fun of their faith. I personally feel that atheists get attacked more by people with religious beliefs. The only issue I have is when people try and incorporate their religious beliefs into politics. I support separation of church and state. Other than that, I generally live a happy life free from religion. 🙂

@Chomyn Yes that is very true. Atheists do get alot of hate from Christians of every stripe. I personally have little contact with the believers. ( Lucky)
To make sense of the madness myself. I put the puritanical or evangalistic type into the . " They no not what they do " box. Without verbally or physically hurting anyone . I treat them as I would a down syndrome person. Respect them , wipe their chin occasionally. But never go out of my way to prove a negative.. It's needless & achieves nothing.

I’m with you, all the way

I find it hilarious. Atheists are so sure this is all there is with zero proof and even less ability to find proof. I don't get why they can't just admit they don't really know and can't know. They point to science and I always point out that science is limited to the physical universe. The quantifiable. If there is life after death and we are not just intelligent meat science has no way to test for either. I actually view Atheism as another religion. Their beliefs are based on nothing more than faith. They get so worked up if you dare say there may be a spiritual aspect to life as if you told a Theist their God ot gods don't exist.

"Ve vill haf NO spirit here! Actung!"

2

Define "spiritual".

A Dream catcher is a spiritual piece of string art.. Especially when doused in insence..
Spiritual can be used to convey something beyond our physical understanding. IE: " I get a spiritual feeling laying on my back looking at a star filled night . Hairs on your arms rise up as the rain starts. Thunder lightning, an embrace from a lover , emotional. Once Spiritual or spirituality gets the S word stigma. .
Point of personal privilege... We're doomed..

2

i don’t have a problem with people being spiritual, but i don’t consider it very different from religion. for both, i’d say it’s totally fine to have your beliefs and even share them in an unobtrusive way (post like this i think is fine, for example). the problem, in my experience, has been that people who label themselves as spiritual tend to treat me like a depressed, heartless nihilist for not agreeing with them or even try to change my mind. i’m not saying you or all spiritual people do that, but it’s been my experience, so i can understand why some atheists may have a problem with the word.

@BohoHeathen i can see how that word could be used that way, but i never would, personally. i was extremely religious until adulthood though, and the connotations around words like that put me off.

2

I agree with you.
