"You shouldn't judge people!" I have often heard this from my Christian friends. They base it on "Judge not lest you be judged". I find it ironic that when they say this, it is predicated on judgement, that is by their judgement someone was making a judgement.
What other things have you heard theist say that is full of irony?

I think real judgment involves punishment. The other judgment is just observation.

Could you expalin this further?

@DavidLaDeau One example of real judgment is the type done by a judge who can mete out punishment if you're guilty. Then there's the ordinary folk who judge and punish people as they feel inclined. Then there's judging people as being whatever but leaving them the hell alone.

@brentan Thank you!

Evangelical Christians are the most judgmental people I know.

I was a young earth, creationist, fundamentalist, extremist. In my JUDGEMENT you are correct!

Sex is a sin, but the resulting baby is a ''blessing''.

Okay that is an excellent one liner, one not to be quippy, just the facts!

4

Do not take any notice of what they say, they are usually the worst perpetrators

Everybody judges others! EVERYBODY! It is human nature. If they say they don't they are either a liar or an idiot. Judgment, and the resulting validation or invalidation, leads to knowledge. This knowledge can lead to respect or contempt.

4

Well, they're fucking idiots, you can't really expect anything better.

Ouch I disagree too but name calling?

@DavidLaDeau I have no respect for believers, and I generally don't like most people. So, yes. Name-calling. They are fucking delusional morons.

@KKGator Delusional yes. I was one of those Morons. They are simply confused, and misinformed. humans.

@DavidLaDeau You have every right to be an apologist.

@KKGator That endeavor is what made me an atheist!

The actual quote is "Judge not for you yourself will be judged by that selfsame measure." Basically, it reminds you to be kind and not make hasty, arrogant, or rash judgments of others because you're sure to be judged just as harshly. I think of it as an extension of the Golden Rule, do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. While I'm not a Christian or a believer, I never ignore good advice, regardless of the source.

The actual quote is in greek. In english there are many, many traslatikna that do convey the idea. I agree that in general it is a good thought. What I am taking to task here is the context or lack thereof. If God had wriiten the Bible it would have been very clear as in your (better than Gods laying out of the concept). But thst is not what the Bible says. We have to read into the Bible things that are not there to come to your rational conclusion.
This being said you in this case are much smarter than God. I would expect that an all powerful god would be at least as smart as you. Evidently, accordign to this scripture that is not the case as Christians commonly misunderstand this simlpe concept.

So basically don't be a hypocrite

@LenHazell53 A succinct and accurate summary.

God loves us, but would allow us to be burned and tortured for all eternity for not loving him back.

Christianity is so full of contradictions that irony is expected.

I would take it further, to maintain their belief system it is NECESSARY!

3

They wouldn't see the irony if you hit them with one.

3

Everybody judges to some extent. Your an idiot if you don't and your life choices will reflect what a good/poor judge you've been.

It always amazed me that Jesus was said to be "the first fruits of the dead" when anyone that studied the bible knew it was not true. We also know that Jesus himself and many others of the time believed the Jewish OT scriptures to be true. This gets you into discussions with believers who try to explain that others raised from the dead would not remain raised and would have to die again. This is an attempt to validate that scripture about Jesus. (I Corinthians 15:20.) Maybe they want you to believe that others had died and come back, but did not go to heaven and see god. Who knows? Remember that Lazarus never said anything about being dead. What about all of those people who came out of the tombs when Jesus was crucified? Maybe they went home and scared the crap out of their families and then one day they all dropped down dead again. Yes, god works in mysteriously hysterical ways.

Thank you! You always have much to think about!

Mmm that, Christ was born on Christmas Day to pay for other’s sin and preach love and understanding when the Christian’s own mis translation has caused one of the largest genocides in known herstory; the witch hunts. Very sickly ironic for a book that had been attempted a make over by a loving Jesus 🙁

I had jury duty not so long ago and a handful of little old ladies tried this tact to get out of serving. The pearl clutching and declarations they could not possibly judge another person were somewhat ineffective.

The irony meter really gets pegged by fundagelicals being the most judgmental people you can imagine. That's because fundamentalism is about being right, not about being good. Doctrinally right, ideologically right, and it has now devolved into being politically right.

They only deploy "judge not" when someone tries to hold them accountable. They're happy to judge unbelievers, gays, all sorts of people just for disagreeing with them.

The irony meter blows up every time on this one.

I think that everyone judges people by what they say or how they look without ever knowing anything about them...it is how you respond to people, if you want to find out more about them or their situation as to how they got where they are at the point of interaction..the only way to stop judgement is to actually talk to the person that you are mentally judging...I have met many people that are big and evil looking and thought if I say the wrong word here I am going to hospital..but as a musician, and you sing a few songs and they actually come up and chat with you after they are total sweethearts who would probably kill you if you played the wrong song...lol

Actually, I some of my best friends were very scary looking. Even though I knew they were better humans than most, I dreaded going out on public with them. Yes they were that scary looking.

"I hate the sin, not the sinner."
And they get to decide what the 'sin' is.

Sin and evil in the Bible share the two main meanings.

  1. that which causes harm
  2. that which pisses off God

@DavidLaDeau And they get to decide what pisses off god.
So they can choose a religion--god--which thinks as they do, who is pissed off by the same things they are, and by proxy invoke that 'holy' name to bully other people into behaving the way they want.
Convenient.

I tend to think that one of the examples of irony would be what happened with 'Evangeloon' neighbor in mid-winter 2013.
He was erecting a structure made up of full length railway sleepers ( railways
ties in the U.S. I think) whilst wearing his usual footwear, i.e, soft and unprotective canvas shoes.
As i was walking past the front of his yard where this monstrosity was being erected I noticed his footwear and merely said to him, "I think you may wish to wear some stronger and more protective boots when moving and lifting those things, they are made from very solid, very heavy and very tough Hardwood you know, drop on of those on your foot and you'll probably either badly bruise your foot or end up with a broken bone or two."
His reply was, " While I have God and Jesus in my heart and in my life they will protect me from all things that can harm me."
I started to continue walking and then I heard this very heavy thump coming from behind me followed by someone screaming in pain and agony, I turned, looked and sure enough there he was on the ground with a railway sleeper laying across both his right foot and lower leg.
10 minutes later the Ambulance arrived, I helped them lift the sleeper clear and one look was enough to tell both them and I that his foot was more than likely fractured in at least 2 places and that his tibia and fibia were also fractured as well.
Later I thought to myself, " Some dependable protectors he has in God and Jesus, hope he has learned a lesson this time."

I think I dropped a few too many sleepers on myself in my life so to speak before I learned my lesson.

It was God's will, he'd likely tell you

@DavidLaDeau Errr, out of curiosity here, have you ever tried lifting an Australian railways sleeper, aka railway tie in America, they are made from the very hardest of hardwoods available in Australia, are about 7" thick, 8' long and 12" wide, they average out at roughly 80 - 90 kilograms each and usually need 2 -3 people to lift and carry them.
To actually hammer a nail into one, first you NEED to drill a hole in the wood with a Tungsten tipped drill bit or you'll just spend your time bending nail after nail.

@DavidLaDeau, @Storm1752 Then that God of his truly has a sick, sadistic will does he not.

@Triphid Actually I have used many of them at my farm. I actually was being more philosophical.

1

Perhaps this explains why so many christians and ex-christians have such poor judgement. Another example of the deep anti-intellectualism inherent in much religion and “spirituality” both.

Thinking is a very bad thing in any religion that requires faith.
The test for a false god by the way is that they require faith in order to believve in them. There is no god that does not require faith.

1

We all judge people. It's impossible not to. One can try not to be judgmental, but we all have varying standards by which we judge others.

In English it appears there is 2 different senses, uses, or definations for judgement.

Research the original text language to see for sure which it is referring to.

Making a sensible conclusion does not mean you are damning someone with your divine powers of punishment.

judgement

  1. the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.

  2. a misfortune or calamity viewed as a divine punishment.

Word Level 8 Dec 18, 2019

It would seem thst an all powerful god could have made this clear in his inspired, holy writings. As it is still unclear to his followers.

@DavidLaDeau Some monotheists reject the view that a deity is or could be omnipotent, or take the view that, by choosing to create creatures with freewill, a deity has chosen to limit divine omnipotence. Wikipedia- Omnipotence

@Word Good to know it is prolific enough to be on wiki. It is unsurprising as the more we know the smaller and less powerful god gets, particularly when it comes to science. I am happy that Christianity in general is becoming more liberal in the respect of inerrancy in the scripture.

1

I am guilty of this. I leave most religious folks alone to believe as they choose. The one area I find myself judgmental about is how judgy they can get about non-believers. Drives me nuts and it evokes very strong negative emotions.

If it did not annoy me I would not have created his post!

@Doraz Very, Very well said.

@Doraz good distinction. Nicely stated.
