As an Aussie living in a mainly secular country I'm amazed and disheartened by the stories from Americans who have to hide their secularism and who are discriminated against because of it. It's difficult to accept a first world country with third world beliefs. To all you poor buggers, hang in there and keep fighting for your independence, we feel for you.

Thank you! As an American with friends all over the world, it becomes obvious how idiotic we appear and are as a nation. When I live stream with other atheist the conversation always turns to aweful American beliefs and how Aussies pee without getting the ceiling wet!

3

I believe that religious people are trying to pass third world beliefs in aussie. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My NZ friend says they are having some of the same issues there, but it's not even close to as crazy as here.

@Jennw
The aussie's are trying to push a religious discrimination laws. That is third world beliefs.

We were stupid enough to vote in a religious zealot and then act surprised by this.

Wish I could correct you. Religious Anti-Discrimination Bill, is supposedly going to protect indiduals. It is actually a licence for religious institutions to discriminate against everyone else.

2

Honestly, the only real discrimination I've really felt was from my own family.. Yes, they're the loony southern evangelical type, so you can only imagine what they're like. But as for the rest of the people I come in contact with, they just accept it and move on.

2

Mind blowing isn't it? Especially in the 21st Century.

The theory of evolution (which is now known as a fact) has been around since 1850. The Big bang scientific proof has been around since Hubble proved it around 1929. Yet, there are people that still think the world is 8,000 years old?? Give me a break.

2

As an Australian/American currently living in Australia, you forgot to mention that the Australian prime minister is a religious fanatic who is currently trying to ram through a religious protection law that enables religious discrimination by the religious. I find religious overtones in every day life here, to be far more noticeable than at any other time in Australia.

2

It is the 1st Amendment in out Constitution that permits our county to attract all kinds of religious nuts in the guise thereof. The Southern Baptists are the largest of the evangelical persuasions that take a somewhat "ardent" view of their mission, which is to stuff religion down ones throat as if a french goose becoming foie gras. Tho not to practice it as the KKK was known to do or not do depending on what suited them.

2

It sucks, like living in a theocracy.

2

In some areas it is particularly difficult.

We feel for em too (Brit)

@maturin1919 you have more than a point 😉👍

@maturin1919 Hahahahahaha, Actually Jamestown, Va. The first settlement was a financial adventure by a corporation. The first group to land had very few women so the company hired about 50 women to go over on the next crossing. Some of the women did quite well.

The brits need to worry about their Muslims. I feel sorry for all the brits that have had to deal with Muslim immigrants ruining their country. Just saying.

2

It turns out we are just a blueprint for Pakistan. USA is pathetic. Always has been and, now, ONLY a has been.

I am sorry, but I think you might be getting carried -away. Blueprint for Pakistan? How are we pathetic, considering the rest of the world. I do agree that we have serious problems. Just saying.

@Grecio Our problems are catastrophic and only a full scale over-throw of this mess might fix things. If you don't see that then I can't help you.

2

as a Canadian I have the same feeling about hiding these things.... what is up with that..... seems like Agnostic and atheists are secrets...

I would feel physically choked if I had to hide my atheism.

2

Thank you. It might even be a good idea to move to Australia. 🙂

I happen to live in a part of the UI.S. which, at least in the larger cities of the Pacific Northwest, doesn't really discriminate against secularists. Actually I didnt' really experience religious disrimination all hta tmuch when I lived in Los Angeles either.

I also have a brother who lives in the state of Kansas. I have never gone to visit him, in part, because of where he lives, and in part because h eis one of my siblings who hangs onto the religion we were raised in (Mormon). I never visited my oldest sister when she lived in Utah either.

Thanks it will be a struggle

I appreciate the sentiment. The hardcore holy rollers here are just so damn insufferable and it's only served to grow because so many of them feel empowered with Trump being in office. I've done what I can to distance myself from that garbage, yet there are times where I do feel like there are those who would still be doing what they can to drag me back into it, but that sure as fuck won't happen if I have anything to say about it.

I am a Canadian resident and citizen. Like my Aussie commonwealth brethren, secularism and even distaste for religion is far more common here. Yes, there are devout religious types in Canada, but they are tolerated exceptions.

1

Thank you.

It is true; we only have ourselves to blame. The Charismatic Movement took hold in 1910 and we have never recovered from it. With all our resources and all our contributions, we get dragged backwards into the Dark Ages.

Nevertheless, I still love that I am an American. In this day, at this time, perhaps we have another two centuries before we come to a renaissance and enlightenment. Or we get conquered.

I will be long dead before either actually happen. Or, at least, I'm not holding my breath here.

@LantentumCattus "With all our resources and all our contributions, we get dragged backwards into the Dark Ages". EXACTLY THAT!!!

@TimeOutForMe - I know.

The best part of living, right here, right now, is watching what is going on. I like to take the long view on history.

Today, right now, the median estimate is that 20% of the population is "non-identifying" when it comes to religion. IMO, that's a damn sight better than 3% sixty years ago. A hundred years from now, who knows?

All I know is that I won't be here to comment on it at that time. The long view always wins - Europe knows this now from the Age of Enlightenment. The Middle East has yet to get started. The United States is in the "tweens" age of getting there.

Can't comment on Asia - I don't have enough history there to comment.

@LatentumCattus i personally think a lot of people are getting wind of the fairy tales that's been around for centuries and coming to reality. ...and plenty still wallowing in their faith going nowhere slowly. It's nonsense that govt's are still giving in and funding those religions. They do so for voter support and to keep them in check. ...the majority who are still dizzy in faith, waiting for their promised land😊

@LatentumCattus Hey here is an idea. Let's list good reasons to live since there is no real point to life. I will start and hope others contribute. I do believe in being thankful.

  1. enjoy friends and family
  2. to get to see the nex iPhone
  3. to see new technology, especially new automobiles

@Grecio - 4. Strange and wonderful flavors and scents.

  1. Eventually catching the red dot

  2. Napping in a sunbeam

  3. Strange and wonderful flavors and scents (I am highly motivated by food).

Australia has a Conservative government. You think Americans are not as tolerant and accepting of diversity as Australians are? Which part of the U.S. did you experience third world beliefs?

Really! do you not read the posts on here? Alabama`s abortion laws, Kids allowed to get answers wrong if they contradict religious views, gay farts cause cancer, vegan burgers alter DNA and right there in the white house Trump's spiritual advisor casting out demons ffs all she needs is a bone through her nose.

@273kelvin We all know in the U.S., especially the progressive states that the American South is a problem and we are fighting it hard. But I am not sure if Australia is better in these respect. I have heard stories coming out of Australia of beating of immigrants, harsh immigrant deportations and much of God loving. How is Australia better than the U.S.?

@St-Sinner Politics is often dirty all over the world. What the poster was expressing was his sympathy for those like us who are secular but find it difficult to "come out". From what I glean on here, much of the USA social life revolves around the church. In Australia, it is the pub.

@273kelvin The U.S. has been politically and religiously 50:50 and it is always a fight between the two ideologies. There are a lot of ironies in the U.S. Constitution although it is touted as a wise document. All Men are Created Equal it said but the founding fathers proudly owned slaves and said nothing about slavery being wrong. I believe what the poster said was more relevant 70 to 80 years ago. Not so much today. The religious elements have tendency not to die out easily but they have been losing ground in the last few decades.

@St-Sinner If they are dying out then their death throws are making lots of waves. Overturning Roe vs Wade seems to be inevitable atm.

@273kelvin "and right there in the white house Trump's spiritual advisor casting out demons ffs"??? 🙄 Ffs most definitely 😐

See what happens when you throw off the yoke of British rule! Hard right religion and no national health service free at the point of need cradle to the grave hahaha.
Fair enough, I think we'll be in line for becoming the 52nd State in another 367 days. Porto Rica having the 51st position reserved for them.

1

Dude, thank you but our country's constitution literally mentions the separation of church and state, unfortunately current conditions are a pain in the ass, this should be corrected in November 2020. Why don't you instead worry about Morrison, a pentecostal nut case taking your country in the wrong direction? That threat is much more pressing to you Aussies I would say, than our own nut cases that will most definitely be expectorated in a few months.

My fingers are crossed that you are correct with regard to your next election, but don't worry about morrison as his career is as dead as the wildlife that died in the fires he chose to run from.

@Cyklone Never underestimate the ability of people to choose badly because he is an xtian like them or they have always voted lieberal or their local lieberal has helped them or something stupid. I had a friend who said you vote at the local level and the lieberal bloke was a good guy it did not matter at the federal level ie I am voting lieberal but hoping the labor government gets in stupidity.

@Cyklone so is Trump's.

I feel exactly the same way. This country is supposed to have all these freedoms and we generally do unless and until Conservatives are in control. Then one by one it seems freedoms are taken away. Personally, I don't know how anyone could ever vote republican. obviously, Democrats certainly not perfect but by every measure, but even with warts and all, Dems are better than most narrow-minded better than anyone republican. Wow, I really didn't mean to type all that out loud. Where is my CBDa 10x Pure Gold... Oh, here it is...want some?

Big fight on our hands but we are up to it once Orange turd is gone

I am atheist and I’ve never noticed discrimination against us by the Christian Right.

You don't live in the South do ya??

@Grecio I live in Oklahoma. A lot of my friends are Christain but I never bring up my atheism as I don’t want to have a confrontation.

So what's up with the new "Religious discrimination Law?"
