So, tonight my husband got called an apostate whose after-death destination will be hell. Let me start from the beginning, we share a house be with my parents. We get the downstairs and they have the upstairs, but we share the kitchen. My husband had made a comment about moldy bread he almost consumed and said if it killed him we'd know why. My dad, overhearing him asked, "But do you know where you're going when you die?" Leave it to dad to take any opportunity to insert the gospel. My hubby told him that he already became a Christian at some point. And Dad said his actions were that of an apostate. Then my husband asked, "So you believe Christianity is works-based? I thought the work on the cross was to end death so that you don't have to work for it anymore. That would make God a liar." Dad said, "That's not true!" They bantered back and forth and eventually things does down. Then hubby took his food and escaped to the comfort of our room downstairs. How do you all react when someone calls you an apostate?

Love, where is thy sting?

"How do you all react when someone calls you an apostate?"
You turn the other cheek

Never been called an apostate.

Been called an atheist many times and I always thank the observer as I explain my lack of belief in their invisible sky-daddy is because I have a higher standard for truth then a theist in that I base truth claims on testable evidence not faith (belief without evidence) (fact Free) based superstition.

Better an apostate than someone who believes an eye in the sky watches my every move and gets super jealous whenever I so much as look at another god...

But seriously, get out of that house or your relationship with your folks is going to go from bad to worse with every conversation.

After asking him what an apostate was (jk), I'd probably say, "that's why you live upstairs and we live downstairs, getting ready for the inevitable" I wouldn't call his make believe God a liar. Them's fightin' words. I'm not into drama with the family.

I am, to many, an apostate. To myself I am just me and their phony god belief their burden not mine, unless they seek to interfere in and with my rights and other people's rights. I found most religiously affiliated people hypocrites, especially the evangelical ilk. If there were to be any form of Hell, I would reason that the (This thought is from the Hadifs) Muslim lowest level being filled with hypocrites would make the most sense.

I just rolled my eyes

Call me an apostate all you wish. That is what I am.

Apostasy
Description
Apostasy is the formal disaffiliation from, abandonment of, or renunciation of a religion by a person. It can also be defined within the broader context of embracing an opinion that is contrary to one's previous religious beliefs. One who undertakes apostasy is known as an apostate. Wikipedia

You don't react to it. Your father is bat-shit-crazy but you knew that before you volunteered to share a house with him. I am guessing that his comment was not unusual. Am I missing something because it looks like you "signed up" for this. You clearly need to get out of there. Wondering how to react to your bat-shit-crazy dad is not productive.

It's just a word. It has no meaning to me.

I ask them why are they judging me, because the bible tells you not to.

I'd laugh in their face.

"But do you know where you're going when you die?"

Should have told him the burial location he'd picked out or the manner in which he'd like his ashes dealt with. Your father is probably parroting what he has absorbed. Probably good to let him know his type is not alone. If you can do it without getting ticked off it could help him confront his lousy theology, if nothing else.

I have never been called that, probabky partly because i don't know anyone who would call me that, but also because i am not, according to my heritage, an apostate. I am jewish, and in judaism an apostate is someone who has taken on another god. I haven't. I just realized (age 15) there were no gods. In judaism that ia not apostacy. So i can be an atheist and a jew. If i ever kissed the cross (horrific thought) then i would be an apostate.

I don't really care as I have abandoned all religion. Yes, Jesus died so you won't have to but you die anyway. At that point everyone goes on to continue making it all up.
