So my FB page has a bunch of Xmas messages reminding me that Jesus was born on this day and how he died for my sins and how I owe him a lifetime of praise and glory for having done so much for me.

First, I didn't ask Jesus for anything. If he chose to die for my sins that's on him. Second, Nobody owes anybody anything for a lifetime, I don't care what they did for me. Third, I find it presumptuous of Jesus to think that I owe him so much for doing something I didn't ask him to do and don't believe was even necessary.

Then I remember that I don't believe in Jesus and it occurs to me that I have way too many Xian/conservative friends.

What're ya gonna do?

December 25 is well worth celebrating. It is the anniversary of the birth of one of the most significant people in history, Sir Isaac Newton. Without calculus and optics we would be communicating over a wood fire.

Yeah but all Newton ever did was math and science while Jesus was magic!

Around my town I frequently see a vehicle with a bumper sticker that reads "Jesus owns your next breath, use it to praise him." I always think "Fuck you. What kind of needy god needs people to praise it all the time?

God and Jesus are divas. It's all about "Look at me!" "Praise me!" "Tell me how great I am!" The way they're written, they suffer from narcissistic personality disorder. They're like Trump if he were a god.

So true!! Doesn't he say he is a jealous God?? What the F?? We are to be like him but not jealous?? Doesn't add up again!!!

@2muchstupidity: The "do as I say not as I do" god. It is just so nonsensical.

He only died for three days. Not much of a sacrifice and it didn't change a fucking thing.

All the more reason why I don't owe him shit.

@Sgt_Spanky Exactly!

Worse things happen at sea apparently

Develop more friends who send you notices that Sir Isaac Newton was born on Dec 25th and what a cause for celebration that is. 🙂

As he scored for Man City against my team last week I certainly will not be thanking him for anything.

Go Man. U. the best of the Best.

@Triphid A better result last night. Saw off those West London pansies but wait a minute, you are in the southern hemisphere . Aren't you meant to support Man U ?

@Moravian Always have been a supporter of Manchester United, the Red Devils.

@Triphid I've been a gooner since I lived in London as a teenager. I shared a flat just round the corner from Highbury so I was on the terraces every second week. Funny thing allegiance to a club, if I had stayed in West London I may have supported Chelsea or Fulham.
I always support my local team as well and when living in Perth I supporter of St Johnstone. My greatest memory of Mcdermid park is when they played Monaco in a European game with Fabian Barthez in goal and his super model girlfriend watching. The game ended 3--3 but what a night.

I share a lot of atheist posts on my FB page. That usually settles the issue.

I have a standing rule with myself, I don't discuss religion or politics on FB. It never turns out well when I see others do it.

@Sgt_Spanky Yes, text is usually not conducive to the discussion of substantive topics. I meant that I post atheist articles and memes that I like. It's a way if marking my territory, I suppose. It has also cost me relationships, which seems to me a very efficient way of separating the wheat ftom the chaff.

@LovinLarge I can respect that approach, I just think it's easier to roll my eyes and ignore it all. They all know I'm not religious, or should by now.

@Sgt_Spanky Definitely. Almost everyone I know is religious to some extent and most of those relationships I am not willing to sacrifice over a single issue. After all, we're always going to differ from everyone else on at least one issue and that is probably a good thing.

I get tired of all the threads stating Jesus is the reason for the season..Jesus this and Jesus that. I made a comment that you shouldn't assume everyone is into Jesus. Just a true simple statement.
I then got hammered and scolded by peeps about my comment. One friend even blocked me!!! Wow...touchy touchy!!

I've done similar in the past - all hell broke loose ! It's interesting to me, that all these folks that are supposedly so solid in their beliefs, are so easily shaken by a simple , nonthreatening statement like the one you made - which is merely a plain truth !
So much for their supposed love and understanding eh ?

I sometimes wonder if Jebus ppl know, deep down, that they're faith is bullshit and that's why they get so triggered when it's challenged.

Because you're trampling on their delusion.

@LisaLisa92806 I thought delusions were meant to be trampled on.

That's why the church took over the winter solstice , no proof of his birth and they wanted to gain popularity

Especially at a time when they are losing it.

Jesus, if he ever existed, was the bastard child of a skank whore who got knocked up and lied about it.

Obviously the perfect foundation for a touching Xmas story.

The idea of someone killing their son because others are sinners - who they heck dreamed that up as a rational explanation for anything? It's not like it was a big sacrifice anyway - apparently Jesus knew there was a heaven and death wasn't permanent. I'm sure crucifixion is a painful way to die but I'm certain many others have endured worse - including lifetimes of debilitating pain. Others have deliberately put themselves in harm's way and being tortured to death with no promise of resurrection or an after life. But if you're god / Jesus (all the same right?) just what kind of real sacrifice was that? It's not like he couldn't make another kiddo of flesh and blood at any time right?

Or maybe there was no kiddo, and the whole story is made up to fool and control the desperate and the weak? I know what my money is on given how easily the whole QMoron phenomenon has cowed tens of millions of desperate and weak in modern times when we really should know better.

Yep! I don't understand how people can be so gullible.

I have no time for any moron who buys into the fairy tale of a virgin birth (see also Ishtar, Queen Mautmes, Alcmene and Devaki) and even less time for anyone who uses that as an excuse to belabour me with their absurd religion.

So here's the funny thing about that. I used to go to a meetup group for skeptics, atheist and agnostics as it turned out. As a general comment, they had poor social skills, were unnecessarily argumentative, were unfriendly and downright unkind to each other. I was not the target of any of those behaviors because I kept a very low profile once I saw how they treated each other.

I can't recall seeing a group of religious people treat each other similarly, so strictly on the issue of who is better company I have to go with religious people. No one who knows I am an atheist ever raises the issue of religion with me and that is good enough for me.

@LovinLarge Thanks for sharing that. If anything, I guess that highlights a distinction between social skills and belief/unbelief.

@anglophone But I am still 100% on board with you about not tolerating prosthlytizing and also acknowledge religion as a nefarious force, but because of my experience I don't want to refuse to interact with people in real time strictly because they are religious.

@LovinLarge I can go with that. It may surprise some here to learn that I once supported an acquaintance on his own journey into theism. He was frightened by his own mortality, and by his own admission he needed the false comfort of the Christian Heaven, even though another part of him knew it to be mythical.

@anglophone I hesitate to conceed that religion may be necessary because that would mean it can never go away, but given the amount of reliance on it by some people it is entirely possible.

@LovinLarge
Interesting! Hmmmm....

Ignore them. I do.

That's what I pretty much do.

Not that I believe any of this nonsense anymore, but the silly thing is that most educated Christians realize the trouble with the Biblical narrative that has Joseph and Mary traveling to Bethlehem to take part in a census ordered by Caesar Augustus and conducted by Governor Quirinius, during the reign of Herod The Great. Problem is, according to the historical record, Herod The Great died in 4 BCE, nine years beore Quirinius took office and conducted the census in 6 CE. Another problem is that Rome did not require people to travel to ancestral lands to be counted, nor would they have been required to travel during winter.

The Bible spells out why the couple from Nazareth needed to get their ass (as well as their donkey) down to Bethlehem--they needed to establish the 'House of David' angle for Joseph who, according to the patrilineages in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, was the actual father. It was only later--centuries later--that writers inspired by pagan mythologies felt it necessary to turn Jesus into a deity and went about inserting their interpolations regarding a virgin birth and resurrection, among many other plagiarisms of polytheistic folklore.

Personally, I retaliated this year by posting such gems on my Facebook as “23 1/2 degree tilt is the REAL reason for the season” and “keep Saturn in Saturnalia” as well as pointing out the even the damn Bible doesn’t offer a date for when Jesus was fabricated...I mean “born”. But that’s just me, and I’ve been told I’m a bitch.

What I like to point out is even religious scholars believe that Jesus was born in the Spring, so celebrating his "birth" in December is just another way of appropriating pagan holidays for their use. I also like to ask if we're celebrating Christian holidays as truth, does that mean Jesus died on a different day every year.

Anyone who calls a woman a "bitch" merely exposes their frustration that she doesn't have to participate in traditional scams like religion and patriarchy. Once you know someone doesn't view you as an equal, their opinions are meaningless.

@LovinLarge yep, you nailed it.

@kiramea I think you'll find that the Catholic Church had to do some calculations so the Good Friday and the rest of the Easter Myth would always align with the Jewish Passover Celebrations.
But IF memory serves me correctly, their 'calculations' went quite awry a few years ago when EASTER fell on the First Day of April, known as 'April Fools Day.'
Perhaps, Fate/Karma or what ever else you may choose to call was 'dropping a very big HINT' that the Faithfools just could NOT pick up on?

We have no way of proving jesus was real, let alone he was divine or rose from the dead.

The fact we can't prove he existed is proof he didn't.

1

I feel exactly the same way!!!! Ugh!

1

Also, what is it exactly that he has supposedly saved us from? 🤔

A very long time ago, some woman ate an apple, or a peach, or a banana -- the bible isn't clear on this -- and that tagged us all with an unforgivable sin for eternity so we needed him to save us from that.

Because she ate a mango...or whatever it was. Makes perfect sense.

1

Well let not Jesus's death amount to nothing then, Go forth and sin and sin again and again....LOL.

1

You can prevent people from posting things on your FB page.

And then you could quit FB for a while. You'll know it's time for a second coming when you see all the bumper stickers "BitFlipper disappeared for YOUR sins", though the standard treatment is to keep them waiting a few more thousand years

1

I do my best to avoid social media around Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving.

I do find it interesting that I see only the Christian religion trying to shove their religion down my throat. All other religions (on my page) I may find only one or two references during their holy days.

This is true and a good idea!!

Good idea! I will try to avoid like you do. The other beliefs are not shoving theirs all the time as being always right..right..right. I get so sick of xians always ignoring others around the world that don't believe or celebrate like they do!

1

I control my FB page and not other people. The first thing I would have done is erase all those messages. It's the same thing I do on FB as a political activist. You may not agree with me and you can post but once you treat me like dirt your post is gone. It's my page. Today all the Trumpers avoid me. If I say anything about Jesus it isn't too nice either. He isn't on my page waiting for enough "likes" to be able to do something.

Yes! I did that!

1

Even Christians admit Jesus did not die for your (our) sins. He came back, so he is alive, not dead.

0

ha well id suggest reading the Bible back at them, No son of man may die for another's sins might be a good start, No one has ever gone up to heaven, He who seeks to save his soul shall lose it, on and on
