Interesting read from the near past.
How a Christian Instagram missionary was killed and buried by The Sentineles tribe isolated on the North Sentinele Island in India.
I think he got what he deserved.

There was also a Rockefeller heir who met a similar fate. He was an anthropologist not a missionary.

But he also...found out.

@ChrisAine His name was Michael Rockfeller. All over the place out there. Here's one.

They have made their dislike of outsiders well known.
I believe a ship once came to grief on the reef in bad weather and the crew were considering taking to the ocean in the life rafts rather than waiting on the boat as they were concerned when the tide rose the islanders would simply kill them.
I believe the in the early days of being invaded by anglo saxons they saw whole islands die after coming into contact with the white people and decided not to risk it.
One lot of invaders thought to make friends with them and unloaded some dead pigs ready to eat.

The islanders buried the pigs, with as little contact as possible.

I believe that originally they traded and intermarried between islands but now it is only this island that has not been infected by white people. (I say that as a white person living in a country that my ancestors invaded I can not change the past but I can acknowledge it)

I remember this and remember cheering for the Sentinelese! Like many of the (sadly vanishing) tribes in the Amazon...these people take their freedoms seriously! Only way to make this story more fun would be if they ATE him! 🙂

Mmmmm!
Dumbo Gumbo goood!

Wow, he regarded the Sentinelese as "Satan's last stronghold on Earth." Not only misguided, but one sick f**k.

Ignorance is dangerous. In many ways.

I read about this when it happened several years ago. I can’t read this article because I have to pay. Probably nothing new. I hate that he lost his life, but if he believed an imaginary entity would save him then I don’t have much sympathy.

I read about it when it happened also. But it’s always an enjoyable read!!🙃

Of course it was dog’s(god’s) will, he was sacrificed for his belief in his dog!!!

I've heard about the island, mostly due to idiot missionaries who think god will protect them. The tribe is isolated and the Indian government has made it illegal to visit the island, because the tribe kills anyone who tries to visit.

I would not doubt that the tribe might have developed their attitudes as a result of missionaries, either Christian, Muslim or both in earlier centuries.

@ChrisAine Good thinking! That's a small enough area to maintain. Unfortunately, our native peoples (and those of Africa and South America, etc) couldn't defend theirs.

Unfortunately, that tribe, while it is protected by law, (they weren't hassled for killing the guy snd the fishermen who took him there were jailed) don't have a large enough population to survive more than a couple/few generations.

Yeah, the limited gene pool will likely make them susceptible to diseases. However, geneticists say that early humans may have had a total population of around 500 at one time, so it may not be impossible for them to survive if they had a population of 500 or more when they isolated.

However, I doubt they could survive well if they were exposed to the modern flu and/or Covid. When Native Americans were exposed to European diseases it killed off about 98% of the Native American population(s), because they had no immunity to them.

@snytiger6 last I read, their population may be anywhere from 40 to 400.

Another reason no one should go near and bring those diseases in contact with them.

Hope he got a Darwin Award, he earned it.

That year's winner
