Does anyone else find it a bit condescending that some people can have no interest in you because you don't have a " college education"?

That's just ignorance! A piece of expensive paper doesn't make you better than anyone! That's just sad!

Well said Michelle

@ScienceBill72 thank you!

@Michelle you are welcome

Just think is all one needs to do. Donald Trump can call himself educated and we all know that truth. It is when I meet someone , it is easily noticed how well they can convey thought. Educated people for the most part happened to be in an environment that cultivates thinking, And again we all know Trump attended classes but never understood the academic meaning of think,
I enjoy an educated crowd, Here I get to learn new things, perhaps re think things, and most importantly I learn/ Not condescending , just a way of life for some.

I don't ever recall demanding knowing anyone's educational level , before deciding to be friends with them . On the other hand , if I'm in need of surgery , I sincerely hope the surgeon is well educated , and fully certified by a well administered panel . People can be educated or uneducated in specific areas of learning , without being educated in other areas , which does not mean either the college or high school grade should be considered a snob for being proud of what they've accomplished . On the other hand , I've hired supposed professionals , from plumbers and electricians to surgeons , who should never be allowed to do the jobs they've supposedly been trained to do . A half ass job , with or without a paper certifying your training , is still a half ass job . I do , however , enjoy being around people who are enthusiastic about their interests , and am totally not interested in being around people with absolutely no ambition , who's only thoughts are about critisizing others with ambition , who do get ahead , while whining about the fact that their own income is less because they've made no attempt to improve their own abilities . I got to know a man who dropped out of high school , then let his mother support him for over 20 years , who felt he had as much right to be CEO of a huge company and pull in a 6 figure income, as the man , who learned his trade , came up with the original ideas , started the company , and ran it for over 40 years .

I'm not saying that an education isn't valuable.The point I was referring to is , should an education level be a rigid qualifier in a personal relationship.That being said, I guess does a piece of paper make you superior to say, someone who is just as intelligent and/or self educated without the paper?

@nvrnuff It's not a piece of paper that people respect . It's the YEARS of hard work and expense , someone has gone through earning the right , to hang that symbol on their wall , that we respect .

You see thats my line two sets of professionals I want well qualified and sober...surgeons and airline pilots and of the two features, I'd prefer them to be sober 😉

@Amisja I like that!

I was going to put my two cents in here, but with this many comments, I'm sure someone else has already said what I was going to say.

Any system needs a fail-safe backup - say it!

6

I do. Just because you have a college education does not mean you are not an idiot.

6

Yes, absolutely.

6

Yes! I don't have a college degree, just a vocational certificate. I am a good guy, and would be a great partner.

6

I'm condescending towards people who HAVE had a college education ????

6

I would much rather know they feel they are superior to me than start dating them and then find out.

What's even more frustrating is dating a person with the same education and then find out they believe I'm an idiot. My ex-boyfriend loved telling me that he was Mensa material with an IQ of 147. Funny thing though..... he firmly believed that insects, amphibians, and reptiles weren't animals because they didn't have fur. He also believe that he would never be caught looking at things of his computer that he wasn't supposed to be looking at because only he knew his passwords. When he was caught he screamed they invaded his privacy.

5

I believe it is condensing that a parent would send her kids to collage, so they will be "better off." A person can take up a trade thru a school for barely next to nothing (sometimes free thru high schools), and make like $60k to $80k right out of high school.

If it's only about the money, yea.

@AstralSmoke I reread what I posted. The parent I speak of, believes a collage degree is the only way. I believe trade school is just as good, if not better.

@countrylife No qualms. It totally depends on the individual.

5

Yes, that can be annoying. If the boss has a college degree he will want his employees to have one if they want to get ahead in his company.

5

If it makes you feel any better, people have no interest in me for a variety of reasons, even though I do have a degree or two. I've found that a lot of people with advanced degrees are arrogant pricks. Then there are a lot of people who like to be condescending for any reason that's convenient. Blow these people off.

Got advanced degrees here and working towards a doctorate...no one gives a FF about me either

5

I have had "some" college, as it says on various forms....my fellow students were a condescending bunch back then!

5

I'd say that those condescending people haven't experienced much of life.

5

It IS condescending. And pretentious.
College degrees don't make people smart - they indicate a past history of opportunity to learn. Many college grads don't know anything after graduation because they squandered that opportunity.

Andee Level 4 May 13, 2018

And often times a person may not know much about anything beyond their degree specialty.

5

Ha! I will say that there is an experience gap. Not necessarily an intellectual gap but it is possible.

Sorry if it sounds condescending but there is a difference in background. I've found that I am more able to communicate with those with whom I share a common background.

Agreed. Not that what education makes anyone superior or inferior. I just find that odds are higher that I'll have more in common with someone who's had the dorm experience, dealt with the agony of mid terms etc.

Read the hateful responses to this question, and you'll see why I don't tell others of my education. I attended the required school to get a rather specific job, but the minute my neighbors find out, they brand me a snob.

5

It's not something I have experienced though I can believe it exists. It seems strange, because both the USA and the UK seem rather hostile to intellect and culture, paying more attention to how wealthy you are. Perhaps having a 'college education' equates to having enough money to go achieve that level of education.

Education in the UK used to be free and it very much depends on the education of your parents as to what you are brought up believing.

In the US, they keep pushing the 'fact' that you need a good education to land a decent job. Propaganda?

5

Oddly enough, I had the opposite experience. From the 3 choices in profile questions, I chose “grad school”. I have a Juris Doctorate, law degree. Other choices were “high school” and “college”. In about 25% of women’s profiles I have seen, I don’t meet their educational requirement in match questions. I never selected a preference for my mate.

4

I am college educated. My father was the smartest man I've ever met, and he had a third grade education. Intelligence is a must for me; education is not.

4

I have very few "bits of paper". I got bored with listening to teachers who had no practical knowledge. I built my first valve radio, to my own design, when I was 14. By the time I was 19 I was building rockets, although my guidance systems left a lot to be desired!
I went to work for an international, American company. By the time I was 47, I was the technical manager AND the sales manager for East and Central Africa. I retired early, because I wished to move to Europe, and then started a publishing business, which was also successful. I retired, aged 68, with universal respect and still hardly any paper.
Ignore the stupid people who equate a piece of paper with "worth".

4

I don't, but I am cleverer than them !!!

Cleverer?

@nvrnuff
Yip, cleverer. The spell check says I am correct, so put that in your cigarette and smoke it ! Lol

@VAL3941 I'll have to take your word for it. Well played, sir, lol

@nvrnuff
Don't know how much trust I can put in the spell check though ?? You might still be right ?

@VAL3941 I'm going to have to check it out now. Well, it's not in the Websters Dictionary.

@nvrnuff
Let me know please ?

@nvrnuff Cleverest exists indisputably, so why not cleverer, although I prefer more clever.

@VAL3941 It's not in the Websters Dictionary

@Petter
Doesn't matter, I am still clever ! Lol

@nvrnuff
Try Oxfords !

@mudhen
Thank you proffessor !

@VAL3941

Either is correct… The comparative of “Clever” is either “cleverer” or “more clever.” The superlative is “cleverest” or “most clever.”

@Betty
Thank you teacher. Wish I could send you an apple ?? ?

@Betty Its that age old comparison problem where there are a few words where the syllable rule is ignored like narrower, quieter, gentler. I am sure there must be an exhaustive list of these types of adjectives!

@nvrnuff Nor is colour, flavour, centre, theatre, authorisation 😮

@Geoffrey51

I was taught that there are always exceptions to the rules. 🙂

@Betty Exactly, i before e except after c, unless its weight, height, deity! ...and then the life 'rules' 😮

@Geoffrey51
That deserves 2 apples !

@Betty
One that cause debate ?

@VAL3941 Thanks Val (or did you mean appel!) I bet that's in Noah Webster's disengagement of the English language. Sorry I mispelt diksheneree

@Geoffrey51
I actually wanted to say apfel as in strudel, then remembered you weren't German ! Sorry !

@VAL3941 Hahahahaha Nice one!

@Geoffrey51
Your word " appel " is the same as the Afrikaans language word meaning apple ? So was not quite sure of your meaning for the word. Talk about confused ?

@VAL3941 Oh sorry Val. I was having a swipe at the Websters phonetic derivation of Eng Lang. I didn't realise that was the Africaans spelling

@Geoffrey51
Not to worry, I worked it out in the end. Thats why I am cleverer than you ? LOL

@VAL3941 Agreed!

@Geoffrey51
Give the teacher an Apple cider !

@VAL3941

It's possible to have a debate, discussion, and argument on just about any subject if you can find someone to do it with. lol

@Betty
They must be cleverer like me, hey ?

@VAL3941

Must be. 🙂

@Betty
See, you are also a clever young lady !

@VAL3941

Why thank you, kind sir. 🙂

@Betty
Stay as sweet and clever as you are !

@VAL3941

I'll do my best. 🙂

@Betty
If you get lost I will Tag you so we can find you again ?

@VAL3941

I'll count on it. 🙂

@Betty ❤?

I always thought that it was a matter of having more things in common.

Like someone who watches sports a lot might like a relationship with someone who also loves watching sports.

4

There is always something new to discover from anybody..... If having college education is a reason to loose interest in learning new things from someone else then I would say that the college education didn't really help that person much......

4

I answered your question earlier but I just thought of another comment which is don't worry, the criteria will change. Right now for me the new criteria seems to be that since I am retirement age and not retired or because I don't own my home (been there done that don't want that) somehow either both or one of these criteria make me an undesirable date. My feeling is that if people are that superficial, it wouldn't have worked anyway.

Ahhh... See??? You are not an undesirable date !!! You are a great cook and that is priceless. I asked a while ago if you would adopt me.... I failed to explain that I own my house. Does that help? ????

@IamNobody you are a funny guy. I have started checking into the process of adopting an adult who pretty much is saying he doesn't exist. It could be very complicated

@AmelieMatisse ha ha ha... No it would be not if we both understand and accept this is just an imaginary scenario. It's just having fun to make it through the day, one day at the time

@IamNobody well then we can draw up the fake adoption papers tomorrow!

@AmelieMatisse and I will promptly sign them !! ( See, in fantasy land anything is possible !! ?)

@IamNobody in fantasy land I am also a multimillionaire with homes all over Europe and South America. When I a copy you can I name you Henry?

@AmelieMatisse ha ha ha... Only because you're so cool, you can call me Henry ( in my own fantasy I still be nobody but I understand this is your fantasy too !! )

I live in central Virginia but my accent is much more southern than is the local norm. Then add in the multiple universities & business headquarters based here, we have a lot of folks from outside the state coming in. When they hear my accent over the phone (I work for a municiple utility) they immediately think I am somehow mentally deficient. I use this to my advantage & these people just spill their guts (I investigate theft of service). Its an advantage on that point.

In real life, I've had dates treat me the same way. Its the last date if they do.

Also, I don't wear my degree around my neck & if a degree means that much to someone, I'm not sure I really want to pursue a relationship with them. Some of the smartest, most intelligent & most gainfully employed people I know did not go to college.

DON'T FEEL THAT BAD. When they hear my accent (strong Spanish one) they assume I am a servant. LOL
Once, in Tennessee, I was told "We don't like Mexicans. " I -a NYorker- answered them "I never met one." LOL The woman was shocked I wasn't a dirty chicano ( her words) .
