I don't believe any news outlet that takes advertising or is state sponsored can ever be truly independent and unbiased. I inherently mistrust any news that is one sided and paints a black/white, right/wrong picture without credible facts. I thoroughly enjoy John Oliver/Last week tonight.

Getting actual information from the news stations is an exercise in separating the wheat from the chaff as they all have their own political biases and agendas. This used to be a pretty straightforward exercise but I have noticed that all of the news outlets have become highly polarized with various blocks parroting the same party line and that includes repeating the same pack of lies, often verbatim. I find that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation which used to be fairly unbiased has become slanted to the right on foreign affairs and has partnered with NPR which has also taken a hit since the Trumpster moved into the White House. RT (russian television) used to be pretty decent if only because there were nuggets of truth buried in the propaganda which were pretty easy to uncover but sadly they have become much more sophisticated at spin after bringing on a large crew of Western media types, almost not worth the effort for how much real news is left anymore. Al Jazeera had good coverage up until a few years ago but the censorship from Qatar has made it a watered down version of its former self.
I get much of my news from friends on the ground that are scattered around the planet thanks to the time we spent travelling and meeting fellow travelers, the rest I pick up where I can from the usual suspects.

Raw Story is a good aggregator. Huff post is good, I like Rachel's MSNBC commentary. WaPo it's usually pretty good, and I also trust the Guardian.

I am a subscriber to the Economist. I also listen to the BBC world service and NPR. I have number of podcasts as well that are news/science/history related - Freethought Radio, Planetary Radio, ww2 podcast, and many more.

Same... except for the India News one... Anything that is not right wing craziness... Although sometimes I listen to right wing nut job radio shows just for the entertainment value... they really are crazy!

States-wise, MSNBC, CNN, TYT, Washington Post, NYT , Huffington Post, PBS and read between the lines to correct for political bias.

I use the BBC, Al Jazzera and RT. They're slightly, but not much, better than any of the news outless in the US market.

Reuters seems pretty non-bias.

I mostly don't trust any of them I think in the uk we are in a post truth society.

What does that mean?

@Gareth -that we are in a fake news zone. newspapers print what will sell and what truths people want to believe.

@jacpod So knife crime is not up, City didn't win the Premiership and there's no war in Syria? That's all just wishful thinking?

@Gareth (((laughing))) no, more like - jeremy corbyn hates all jewish people, theresa may is the best thing since sliced bread and we are all cooing over the birth of yet another Royal baby that we probably have to support

@jacpod Sorry, I thought you were saying it was all rubbish, not just the editorially slanted stuff and the celebrity gossip. But I think it's been like that my entire life - I don't think it's anything new and an intelligent person can anyway see through the bias and ignore the irrelevancies. It only affects a small part of my news diet, but I agree with you otherwise.
