People seem to be surprised when they find out that I listen to bands like Tool or Pantera.

What things about you surprise people?

That I have a very playful side. It comes out when I'm relaxed and around the right people.

Lots of goodies.

Age: A few years back a girl half my age ask me out because she thought I was her age.

Sex: When I had long hair, a horny greasy guys thinking was a a girl tried to ask me out. (back then I work our a lot and have a large chest)

Atheist: I usually display a kind and caring disposition. People think I am a theist so I happily correct them.

Army experience: The look of surprise on people when they find out I was in the military freaks people out.

      • the list goes on.

I donate my time and money to social causes that I firmly believe in, but I'm a (closet) misanthrope.

Most people are surprised at how old my kids and grandkids are. They don't think I'm old enough to have kids that old!

I've always enjoyed smashing stereotypes hence, the Harley & tattoo at 50. I try to never assume or generalize.

A number of things really.

My age, people are always somewhat surprised that I'm not younger. (This has, admittedly, become less common the older I get, but it still happens a couple times a month.)

That I'm not college educated. I'm smart, well spoken, and very witty. The lack of a degree can surprise them.

My lack of sexual experience. Considering how much I talk about it, and how near and dear the subject is to me, everyone is always surprised that my experience is only with one woman.

The fact that I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs and never have. Also, the fact that there was no religious indoctrination or trauma with substance abusers that was the genesis for this choice. I simply decided as a child that it wasn't for me without ever partaking in it. And I've stuck by that choice.

That I generally mean what I say. Snarky comments and polite conversation with strangers aside, I don't really say something unless I mean it. A lot of people, women in particular, seem to be e surprised by that.

Most people are shocked when I tell them my age. I guess I don’t look like I’m in my late 40s.

Since I know a lot of new people in the recent past many of them are surprised I went to university, let alone went to grad school, taught classes even. Hey, I work with dogs (and other pets) now, can’t be that well educated right? Actually I built, own, and run my own business, and I do all the advertising/marketing, bookkeeping, and accounting as well as deal with the tech stuff day to day.

My degree is in Archaeology. And I’ve gone on digs and such. That is quite surprising to most people.

I guess most people tend to think that I’m that quiet serious Asian girl who keeps to herself. Poor thing. She must have a very plain boring life. But hey, I can be funny as hell. I can engage in intellectual conversations on any topic. I speak multiple languages. I go on crazy adventures. I’m also someone who tends to be a leader.

A lot. I'm pretty eclectic. Musically, I can find someone or thing of talent in all genres. Religion: albeit I don't believe, I still have questions, I often know more religious history and facts than those supposed believers. Had an argument with an Evangelical who liked to quote "the word of god" from the worst translation of the bible (1611, King James) and who claimed the trinity always existed and wasn't voted on in the 300's at events I named, nor that the first "written" treatise using the word and thought, theory, whatever on it is recited in the 200's was not true - well, no wonder those idiots believe in a 10000 year old Earth. I haven't met a religious, historical belivior worth spit who wouldn't say belief is a leap of faith which they choose to take. With people like that, I can hold an intellectual conversation because they admit to known facts and admit, essentially, that they may be wrong in that leap. I may not agree with them, but for those people, I won't begrudge them their choice.
