Yeah, that’s sad. Therapists and psychologists have a style of contract with patients that says they are legally bound to report crimes confessed to - preachers should follow the same rule.

Not in the US. In the US mandatory reporting only if patient is currently “a danger to self or others.”

From recent revelations, he'd probably be the one doing the abusing.

It is well overdue to remove special status religions have enjoyed for centuries, The law should be the same for all, disclosure of any crime heard at confessional should be mandatory, including child molestation, rape and murder. Heavy sentences should be handed out for noncompliance.

I think it's kind of like doctor/patient confidentiality. However, I think if the doctor thinks you will hurt yourself or others (or has) they can report you? Not 100% sure. Still bullshit. You tell a guy that you are sorry, and you are forgiven!

@TheGreatShadow Doctors (& most other medical professionals) are Mandated Reporters in Caliifornia (along with teachers & others) which means they are legally required to report it if appears that a child is being abused. They don't even need to be sure that it's true.

@Carin I think it’s the same here.

@Marionville One of my sons' online friends was describing some terrible abuse so they & I investigated the situation in Oklahoma, where the kid lives, trying to find out what we could do to help. It turns out that in OK, everyone is required by law to report any suspected child abuse. Seems like a good law to me...

@Carin can’t disagree...!

"We can no longer think about sexual offending against children as some kind of forgivable sin."

I couldn't have put it better myself.
