"the best years of our lives". someone took me to see it when it was 1st released in the 1940s. i then saw it maybe 30 yrs later & remembered parts of it. have since seen it at least a dozen times.
it's a story of hope & aspirations for a better future after WW2. won best picture, best actor & best director academy awards.

The Mission - story of the catholic church spreading acriss the worls - how politics destroyed ideals, how technology destroys the weak, how an idealist is overshelmed, how beautiful a 'simple'' culture can be ......and a beautiful soundtrack with 'Gabriels Oboe' one of the few tunes from that century that will live on through the centuries

Dolores Claiborne. Excellent topic, actors, and cinematography.

3

"Easy Rider".The death of the hippy summer of love and the great music

"Cool Hand Luke". Paul Newman at his brilliant best

Movies do not stick with me; not a visual person, I guess. I listen to books on CD and let them play in my head. But if I have to choose somehting: Easy Rider.

5

The Help, it showed what was really going on in the south during a Jim Crow.

Slapstick is always at the top of my list. My two cult favorites are The Gods Must Be Crazy and Harold and Maude

The first time I saw a Land Rover up a tree I about died! I have that movie on DVD. It's awesome. (The Gods must be Crazy).
I just saw Harold and Maude for the first time and that was a great one too.

In no particular order.

  1. Braveheart - because - FREEDOM!
  2. World’s Fastest Indian - dreams can come true
  3. Blazing Saddles - Slim Pickens
  4. Being There - Peter Sellers (the actor - not the male prostitutes)
  5. Sound of Music - because my daughter loved reenacting it.

Mission to Mars, Fargo,The out of towers, Lost in America, 2001 Space Odyssey, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, All Laurel and Hardy Movies.

Most likely no one here has ever seen this but I love a Japanese anime titled Ninja Scroll. It features not just beautiful graphic and visual design but a tight script. I think it's the best action movie ever made. I've seen it, like, 20 times over the years.

So many to think of depending on mood.
Deadpool, Glory, Dambusters, O Brother Where Art Thou, Zulu, The Man Who Would Be King, Mississippi Burning to name but a few.
I have no single film to chose, they are all part of the story of my life.

I'd say it's pretty much a tie between Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman and The Life of Brian. The Original "Highlander" runs a close 3rd. Oops, almost forgot Rudy and Hoosiers.

1

V for Vendetta, because in this country, and probably in a lot of others, how can't one relate...

5

I love a great comedy.

  1. Waking Ned Devine
  2. My Cousin Vinny
  3. A Fish Called Wanda
  4. Something's Gotta Give
  5. "The Birdcage" starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane
4

The Blues Brothers. The story was fun. So many stars, the music was the best. It was filled with appearances by history making musicians, many of whom are no longer around. The comedy was iconic. And Chicago.

But don’t you have to reject the basic premise of the movie?
We’re on a mission from god?

@Haemish1 The characters believed they were on a mission from god. It adds to the humor for me. If I am only allowed to enjoy movies where the characters are atheists it will certainly limit my choices.

@Deb57
It’s a great film - I love it too. My favorite scene is where they play in the country bar🙂

Blade Runner. Because... Blade Runner. Visually spectacular, darkly dystopian, and a great sound track.

Right with you.
