A belated post to express my pleasure in being a part of this group. In our society, being an Agnostic or (worse) an Atheist is a difficult thing to be, especially living in the South. So, this group of like minded people will be/is an outlet for me express myself and to hear other peoples views about this planet and universe we live in. Very much looking forward to it and plan on being somewhat active on this website. BTW, I'll post my photo as soon as I can locate it somewhere on this !#$%^& computer!!!

Welcome, I can not begin to imagine what it is like to like in an area where the belief in a deity is something that is expected. I have heard many interesting stories from friends who taught in American schools, one where the reading of the bible happened every morning in the classroom with the previous teacher and when my friend did not do it the parents were in an uproar about it not being done. Here it would almost get you sacked if you did do it. The driver on our bus one day (taking my class on an excursion) turned the radio to a god channel and one of the kids piped up with "Can we turn to a channel that plays good music I don't want to hear god stuff." I was not listening to the channel to be honest as I talking to some of the children. Was so proud of him for being polite but pointed at the same time.

Welcome to the asylum. Enjoy your stay.

@JohnnyQB Hey. Doing okay, waiting for the weather to roll in.
How're you?

@JohnnyQB No snow here, it's 75 degrees. The wind is whipping, and there's wicked weather on the way.
Battening down the hatches.

Welcome. I understand your feelings. I am an 82 year old born in Georgia and raised in Florida. Fortunately, I had the experience of living in different cultures for over 25 years -- West Berlin, Germany; Illinois, and Kansas.

Welcome!

I keep hearing about how hard it is to be an atheist in the South, but I’m in Alabama and not one person has ever given me a hard time. Most of my friends are non-believers in church teachings as well. I don’t actually call myself an atheist or agnostic, but I am definitely a non-believer in traditional Christianity and it’s no secret.

The South is a large and diverse region. Maybe things are different where you are.

@Leontion I’m an old retired guy, not vulnerable to those pressures. Maybe that has something to do with it. Also, different parts of the state are probably different.

I applaud your stubborn stance. Keep it up.

Interesting for me that we are looking into religious thought in the South during the period 1955-77 at the moment. This is part of our studies into the Civil Rights movement of the time. As a gentleman of a certain age and location, I'd love to read your memories of the time and in comparison to today.
