I am an atheist.
But I love the Bible.

Let's go through this part of the Bible, Psalm 23:

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Our only lord, our only god, is our common sense, always becoming more sensible, by always learning, and, those around us who have some common sense, and might help us.

So, sensible ideas, and sensible folks, can help us, as an experienced shepherd helps his or her sheep.
I shall not want, since I know how to bring home the bacon, (I am collecting my Social Security check, nowadays, after four decades of living paycheck to paycheck) and I know how to find help from others, if I truly need it.
My sensible nature stops me from over eating, or over indulging in any way (that's what a shepherd does, when he makes the sheep lie down, when the pasture is too lush, so they stop eating a while, to avoid becoming sick). And the still waters, means consuming what we need, when we need it:
"Quiet and gentle waters, running in small and shallow channels, which are opposed to great rivers, which both affright the sheep with their great noise, and expose them to be carried away by their swift and violent streams, while they are drinking at them. Such is the difference between the gentle waters of the sanctuary, the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and the rapid, muddy, and noisy torrents and overflowing floods of worldly and carnal enjoyments."

I know, we all like a little carnal enjoyments, but too much of a good thing can do us more harm than good.

My wife often "restores me soul," meaning, she assures me I am doing quite well, even when I feel discouraged and depressed.
I lead myself in the paths of righteousness, as I understand them, for my sake, since it simply feels so good, to do what I feel is the generous thing, such as, when I help my disabled wife, when she asks me for help, and when I do laundry or dishes, for the rest of the family.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the thoughts of my own death, (coming up in about twenty years or so), I will not dwell on those things that seem depressing or things that scare me, because I have the tools, (the rod and the staff) the tools, in my common sense, and others I can turn to, I have these tools, that give me emotional comfort, the comfort I get in knowing these tools are here, to help me, when I need help.
I can always prepare a table for myself and my family, both in food and other goods we have right now, and building potential, for more. (My brother-in-law is building up a lawn and tree removal service, and doing quite well.)
" in the presence of mine enemies:"
I don't have any enemies. Everybody likes me. So, I don't have anything clever to do with that particular verse.
My cup runneth over, with material things, with love and respect from my wife, and from her family, and, I have the internet, for more information, so I can keep improving my common sense, and, social interaction, such as might come from comments to this post, and, if I'm desperate, I have found that I can get money from strangers, by way of Gofundme. My cup does runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, all the days of my life, since I am a nice guy, I am a sensible guy, and I know how to ask for help.
But there is no life after death, so the part obout dwelling in the house of the lord forever, is just a silly fairy tale.
When I die, I will just be dead.
Thanks for reading.
Please tell me, in the comments, do you like my little rant?
If you like it, I can do the same, for many popular Bible verses.
Just let me know.
Thanks again.

That's gonna be a pass from me.

I'm surrounded by more than enough people who are happy to cherry-pick their favorite bible passages for any occasion.

But you go right ahead and do whatever makes you happy.
I have no problem exercising the "block" function on this site.

Enjoy your day.

I couldn't agree more. That's why I still get a daily e-mail of Bible verses.

Psalm 51:15-17 featured recently:

Open my lips, Lord,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise.

There are parts of the Bible that seem meaningful, interpreted a certain way. I like the story of Job because it illustrates a fundamental truth. Because of his deep insights Job could not help himself. It was impossible for him to curse God and die, as advised by his neighbor. And also the transience of all forms is illustrated.

In general I am not a great fan of the Bible, but a person could view the work as a set of artistic expressions based on myth and parables as well as history. Belief is not required. One does not come out of a museum saying, “Yes, I believe”.

You seem to like the King James version. As a Brit myself, I do have to admit that we have a way of improving the most unpromising material.

No thanks, enjoy it and if you want to be happy about the bible try a Catholic or Christian site.
I’m glad you’re doing well in life, but don’t need the bible references ta.

Everything you wrote is just wrong.

Read Exodus 21: 1-11 and then tell me that you still love the bible.

Funny, they never taught that in Sunday school! Terrifying.

Wow the cognitive dissonance is strong with this one. Not very common sensible...

I agree these are commom sense ideas, as you say, and no one should need to read a bible or wait on god or other people to have them or understand them.

And the christian bible is not literature. I wish people would stop saying that. It wasn't written as a piece of fiction. It isnt a work of art. Niether is it a self help book.

It's a MODERN religious text, based on an series of older religous texts. Why is it MODERN? Because it is translated into modern english a few years ago by people who would try to rephrase and rewrite the original for maximum effect and to suit their idealogy. It wasn't written for art or to help. It was written to convince and manipulate. It's a form of rhetoric, a deranged one, no different from Mein Kampf or the manifesto of a cult.

And don't look too hard or you'll find out that almost all of the problems of the last 2000 years were caused directly or indirectly by this text.

You're an atheist who loves and quotes the bible? How delightfully contradictory of you. I love the bible too, it's great for throwing darts at.

Is anyone here a former Christian

I am. I was raised mostly Conservative Baptist. I left organized religion in my late twenties. I realized I was an atheist around the age of 41 or 42. It was a long, anxiety ridden, journey from belief to non-belief. A journey I am so happy to have made.

@Joanne Cool. so like, were u ever born again.

@Eastpointer Well, according to the religion I was raised in, I was. Of course, now, the line of thinking for them would be that I was never truly a believer, never truly "saved." But, I know that is what they have to say in order to make sense of how a person can be a true believer then become an atheist.

I did always have questions; but I still accepted what I was taught-until I could no longer accept rote answers that made no sense to me. I didn't set out to become an atheist, I simply wanted answers. That I became an atheist was a natural consequence of opening my mind to thinking that conflicted with my beliefs.

Learning more about the bible showed me that the god described in it cannot exist--it is too human, too contradictory. Learning more of the science I was taught to fear and ignore showed me that there is no reason/need to insert a god, of any kind--so why insert one?

@Joanne that reminds me of , i think it was Isacc Newton, who when asked bout why he didnt begin his work by thanking god, he said " it wasnt a necessary of my proof".
Anyhow, regarding necessity,, for me, i just feel i need to believe in something. Like, being born again felt great beyond belief. But the bible just seems too evil at times. Plus, i don't find it easy to run around telling people "repent and believe" . Yet if one truly believed, and felt great, one would want to share that. And factor in the hell concept, and oy vey...
I guess i am at the point where i feel i have no good choices

Well sure, the Book of Psalms is poetry and is meant to evoke images. It is at times beautiful. It is also part of the entire Bible, but that bible is also chock full of contradictions and some horrible messages, too. It is a wild hodgepodge grab bag of ideas from a largely illiterate culture.
I will say I am fascinated with the Bible as the culture-shaping politicized document that it clearly is. I have a morbid fascination, I guess.

From the same author? Who wrote:

"Exodus 21:20-21 20:
“Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.
Leviticus 25:44-46 44 “:
‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly."?

@Gwendolyn2018 Nope, it's the same "vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; misogynistic,, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."! - author!

@Gwendolyn2018 How many times did I hear that hollow theistic lecture before!
For 'Da believers' it is 'Theeee Word of God'! And that is 1 author. Peace? The Bible? You obviously didn't read the first comment, the (original) ten commandments or all the promotion of harm in those 'holy scriptures'! If someone writes you a comment contained even out of only 2 and not 100's of contradictions, you will still see the 'content' promoting 'Peace'? "She is a Heathen and she shall be killed,,,,, water your plants regularly so said The Lord The All Merciful"! Idioticus 41 Chapter D!

@Gwendolyn2018 Theists beliefs know mainly 1 fundament: "The holy scriptures are The Word of 'God'" so we need to give them that and debunk it(easy). Ofcource it is written by a bunch of desperado's and that is exactly my point, a female would have written better myths I guess, it might have given more humane perspective to the nonsense-mythical text. But you still can't apply the term 'peace' to anything that is based on ideologies, beliefs, emotions by default. Especially when the scriptures are telling you otherwise. Theistic Beliefs are nothing but a few stolen universal values among a larger content of hatred, greed, ignorance and booldsheds. Not to forget the demonizing of anything else that doesn't go with their way of thinking, including females. I was only stating facts so who is talking about bashing? And who said that I support the (now might be) unaccepted thoughts of our poor friends Aristotle or Plato? You see, I believe in the Evolution, the Evolution of everything that has changed, is changing or might change. The evolution of thoughts, plants, languages, humans,,, What people in the time of Aristotle found 'Good' or 'Reasonable' doesn't at all mean that you now at 2020 do! Thinkers and scientists who don't make (major) 'mistakes' are not as useful. People who come after them can't otherwise Learn from these 'mistakes' and improve. And who said that the 'Western Philosophy and logic' are unquestionable! Take a look out the window and see how non-whites (and some whites) are showing a reaction againt systemic and legalized discriminations throughout history and till now! The biggest difference though between a Theist and a Freethinker is the Courage of the latter to question one's self, correct, improve, devolpe and achieve.

One could get more sense out of the backside of a mule with diarrhea than from that holey book.

2

He forgotto tell us to "Note the sarcasm". If he's serious about this then he was made to lay in green pastures and what was done to him with that rod and staff ... ? I'll leave the rest up to you.

More shit happens!!!

When i was theee i woke up during an eye operation. I remember the event.

In the first grade, before organized prayer was banned from public schools, that prayer scared the shit out of me. He maketh me to lie down sounded like anesthesia to me and i couldn't get past it.

Anyway it's about loyalty to and dependence on a fictional character whose volatility belies the seeming benevolence here. It doesn't need to be reinterpreted to be something real and nice. If you like how it is written, cool. (I prefer dickens, myself.) But it's about the i love you but do as i say or else guy, not your wife or the internet or how good a consumee you are.

The books are wonderful. Thousands of years of reinterpretation, by hundreds of cultures. Historical poetry of current explanation and desire.

Our current-day enemy are those who become righteously susceptible to distortion of ancient words.
.
How do we reduce the force of such ignorance?

These writers thought they were slaves in babylon. Thought they were taken against their god's wishes. Whatever.

Writing on animals skins was the best new tech. These people wrote, upon animal skins, their collective yearnings. The writers of these stories were the nerdiest dudes of their time.

The recorded stories told in other cultures for thousand of years before. Later books do the same for their time.

The most ancient stories are everywhere. As they should be. The "jews" in babylon did us a great favor. How can that not be obvious.

And, I thankfully admire those who spent their lives transcribing that we may set eyes upon what they wrote. How is it not amazing to live here and now?

"Come out and kick a ball with us."
"Not tonight, I'm learning how to read eqyptian."
"Duh?"
"I know. It's a family thing."
"To not kick a ball?"
"To learn lots of very interesting stuff."
"Maybe tomorrow?"
"Erdu."
"I won't tell anyone."

These people gave us wonderful gifts. This is how people thought at that time, in that place. That is brilliant!

And their main message was:

Life is not a joke.

Life is not a drill.

Life is all we got.

We must have more promotion of the truth as it is learned. Whatever the source. Without the political crap.

(Ex: The current Egyptian government (people?) does NOT own the pyramids. And all the other found shit.)

I am saddened to be too sure the short term requires violent resistance to avoid democracy's destruction during the coming world wars. Resulting in another 500 years of rebuilding.

We must not let here and now fall. We are unique in history.

Nope. Please dont.

The Lord is a sheep herder that i shall not want. That covers it.

I don't think many here see your humour.

I skipped the bible passages, and read his commentary at the end.

I guess we can say a couple people here can see his humor.

1

Way too contradictory for me to even begin to utter an opinion. I will move on.

I enjoy religious documentaries, however I would NEVER think of subjecting my friends here with my take on said documentary.

Ever wonder why Jesus is a documentary and Zeus a fable?

@Beowulfsfriend Many times. I've also wondered why the Christian God is the only true God while all others are fake.
