Has anyone here read One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America by Kevin M. Kruse?

I find it incredibly fascinating and disturbing and I wonder where this country would be now if this narrative had never been pushed in the 1940s and onward.

I haven't read this, but sounds very interesting. I will have to check it out. Over the years I have lost numerous friends and relationships due to the consequences of religious fanaticism.

Sounds like an interesting read. Currently worried about parts of The Handmaid’s Tale coming true lol

Sounds like an interesting read, but I can't say I've read it. I imagine it was in response to the atheism of the USSR, and I must again say "damn Americans! You ruined America!"

I read it a couple of years ago. It's an enlightening read.

No, but it sounds interesting.

Sounds interesting and similar to Democracy in Chains by Nancy McLean. She chronicles how the conservatives planned the government takeover that we are now experiencing.

No, but the title sounds intriguing...

One nation under God and yet we are supposed to believe church and state are separate? They are in cahoots. How to best control the slaves so to avoid uprisings is the best description I can come up with.

Separation of Church and State has been redefined by the Right to mean that the Government does not have the right to declare an official state church. Sadly, when religion and state become bedfellows both become corrupt and dysfunctional as our Founding Fathers knew from the history of Europe.

@Heraclitus Yes it is an ancient practice. America IS European ruled with another name.

The development or obedient workers, just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork but dumb enough not to realize how hard they are getting jammed up the ass by corporate america? Was that the book or am I thinking of George Carlin? 🙂

Certainly the early history of the US is like a patchwork of different religions being imported, and even today there is a tolerance for some pretty weird stuff such as scientology. You could argue that a basic Christian religion is one of the things that unify the country, amidst a whole host of things which create internal stresses. I might look it up next time I'm in a bookstore.

I haven't read it but maybe I should. My take on religion in America is that believers have always wanted you to think we are "a Christian nation." This starts out with false claims of settlers coming here and why they did in the first place. (To worship god, of course.) At some point it might benefit corporate America to push these beliefs. One mindset is created to the point that today believers think that god and Jesus had something to do with our Constitution. How utterly bizarre this trash gets. This is the mindset of why Israel had to become a state when it did (it's in the Buybull) and what it all means to believing Americans.

My step father always said that his big proof of the bible being true was that it predicted in the end that Jews would all come back to Israel and that was happening today. OK, I would predict that there are just as many Jews living elsewhere as there have ever been.

I've heard of--but haven't read it.
The premise, as expressed in the title DOES sound reasonable to me, unfortunately.

I think it would be much better of than it is now.

I haven't read it, but I need to use up some audible credits within this next week or lose them... trying to decide which books to download. Would you recommend this book?

The reviews seem to indicate it's a bit long and tedious, but I generally listen to books as I'm falling asleep, so maybe that's good, haha!

I think this book would be preaching to the choir for many here, but I'm interested in facts backing up this perspective that the Christian God wasn't pushed into our politics until the last 60/70 years or so.

no, it sounds scary
