While my overall politics do lean heavily to the right, I've been a registered Independent since I reached legal voting age. George Washington (who was Independent) once said to an extent that the instant we start associating with political parties is the instant we will become a nation divided... he was right.

Nothing hopefully. I contend most human beings have a safe space whether it be a social media site, a favorite room in one's dwelling, or some sort of local club. When it comes to free speech, I've said this a thousand times before and I'll say it again- no one I repeat no one on the face of this planet has the power to offend you with "hate speech" unless you give them permission to do so. Ignoring haters sends a powerful message whether you believe that or not, as ignoring malcontents such as that assures they will not receive an audience, at least from one person anyway. As for me, I will defend to the death the right for someone to state their opinions/views regardless of if I personally agree with them or not. I long abandoned religion as most major world religions seek to suppress free speech and thought, a tell tale sign of a control freak. Lastly, I've come to be at peace with safe spaces, I think most of us have one in mind should the need arise for a much needed retreat. I take it you're okay with safe spaces too. Afterall, you're a member of a "safe space" that I host on this site, so come join the club I say. I've disagreed with some of your views in the past, but still welcomed you into the group I host, as you were always civil in your approach to debating. I firmly believe you have every right to the money that was deducted from your paychecks all these years. I have come across posts similar to this one quite a few times in the past, and I don't think the correct question was asked. What we should be asking is do we really need the Federal Government to manage our finances, does Government really need more power over our lives? Personally, I don't think the Government has any right to deduct money from any of my paychecks in order to fund what amounts to a social program, as our Government was not originally designed to be one big social program. I am thoroughly capable of saving my own money and establishing a safety net for myself. There are/have been many citizens over the years who have paid into Social Security only to pass away unfortunately before they reach retirement age. They never got the chance to benefit from their forced contribution, and I've personally known some that happened to. Now, I must question in the cases for those who have been on disability collecting for years and at a relatively young age, if they continue doing so for many more years to come as they are not able to work, is all the money they get actually the exact amount they had paid into or would they be digging into the coffers in order to still receive payments? For example, my one neighbor had been on disability since he was 29 years old and he's in his early 50's now, so I figure he had about 11 or so good years to pay into SS. He could very well live another 20 or 30 years all the while being on assistance for the rest of his life, so... is all the assistance he gets actually what he paid into or would it take funds that came from someone else's paycheck to cover him? That is just one example of what goes on. In the end, we must ask ourselves is it truly moral to force a free citizen to be forced to pay into a program that of which they may not want to partake in, especially when this is something I think each individual could do on his/her own, saving that is? I could not imagine having to be on disability for an extended amount of time (in this case for more years than I paid into the system) knowing others could eventually foot the bill for me, I think I'd rather die first than go that route. I know deep down inside if anything were to affect my health or if I got critically injured, if I do not have enough of my own money saved up to pay for medical costs, I will die, plain and simple as that and I am totally at peace knowing that. The example cited above is one of many reasons why I disagree with the political left when it comes to economic and financial issues, I have an individualist take on life whereas the modern day Democrats have taken a collectivist outlook on life. Again, the real question we should ...

This is one area where you and I would agree on. I do strongly believe if someone/group of people wish to organize into a union, they should have every right to do so. There are pros and cons when it comes to unions, both being rather equal in number. It should also always be a choice whether one wants to belong to a union or not, no one should ever be forced to join. Personally, I have no need to belong to a union. Lastly, while I agree with the idea of privatized unions, I am firmly against taxpayer funded ones though.

I think that's a bad idea to have political questions on the bios, even if they are optional, because some of those who would choose not to share their political views could possibly get other members to wonder about them in a not so good way. Being on this site now for well over half a year, I'm convinced politics actually divide us more than religion does, and gives some the motivation to be nasty to others. Glad to hear you are a centrist, and truth be told my own views align more closely with Libertarian values as opposed to one side or the other. Again, not sure that would be going in a sound direction, then again it might be a useful addition, guess we won't know for sure until that option is implemented. In short, my answer to your question would be no, we the citizens already face enough restrictions on things in daily life. Besides, regulating/outlawing certain objects never made them disappear, people will get ahold of them regardless of any restrictions. Not sure if this is true or not, but supposedly New Jersey classifies air powered weapons/crossbows/slingshots as firearms, as absurd as that is, apparently NJ lawmakers don't know why regular guns are called firearms (key word in there fire). While the muzzle velocity of modern airguns is considerable, the type of ammunition used is a big factor on how lethal said airgun is, and pellets (assuming they are not wadcutters) do far more damage than BB's do. I've got some mad lethal pellets in my inventory, and airguns that get up to 1,400 fps. I'd talk about airguns in the group I host, but I get the feeling not many in that group would be interested though.
