I didn’t like that version so much. It’s a bit monotonous. In the other version, the king is led to discover the murder while hunting in the forest. The hart and the dove are significant symbols. Here’s an explanation from the Internet: … the white hart, a white deer, and the dove, are magical creatures. The dove represents the spirit of the murdered husband, and in folk tales white harts always point to some deeper truth when seen in the hunt. In the story the white hart leads the hunting king to the spot in the forest where the murder took place, and the dove comes and sings about the murder. So we have a story that has a historical background coupled with the beliefs people held at the time.

Damned right I have anger issues. Having said that I don't often bring it up or even think about it unless something comes up to bring it to mind.
brentan replies on Nov 2, 2018:
@zing We all need different amounts of time to heal the wounds. Sometimes I can’t muster the tact needed to make a well-rounded comment so I apologise for that. I joined the ex-JWs online about 20 years ago when Robert King set up e-watchman.com. My anger wasn’t great in the first place, because I got more from the religion than I lost (and that’s unusual), and when you consider it was such a long time ago… I think what prompts me to keep telling ex-JWs to move on as fast as possible is to remind them to get on with their lives. The Watchtower Society took years from people, sometimes their whole lives, and I think they should do their best to move on and reclaim what is left. But they must grieve and they must vent and go through stages almost like bereavement. Another way I differ from many ex-JWs is that I have no desire at all to save serving JWs from their bonds. I firmly believe that the ones who hold fast the faith deserve everything they get and the ones who have a good heart eventually see the truth and leave. Lots of ex-JWs strongly disagree with my opinion that current members love the smugness and feelings of superiority that comes part of the package. That doesn’t include the ones who are held captive because they don’t want to lose their family, friends or employment. They have more to lose than I ever did. So I hope this describes where I’m coming from, not to justify my opinions but only to explain them.

It's not paedophelia as we understand it. It's a primitive custom that prevailed in many places through history and relatively recent examples of it can be found in America up to the 1930s. Nonetheless, the freedom to express an opinion (no matter whether it's right or wrong) in public is at ...

The first step of Freedom is the realization that everything is open to question. Do you agree?
brentan comments on Oct 29, 2018:
I think yes to freedom of thought and the freedom of speech that allows people to engage in discussions so as to be able to think better. Where action is concerned, I agree with the religious thinkers who feel freedom is the ability to chose what is right and do it.
brentan replies on Oct 29, 2018:
@rcandlish Yeah, that’s the rub. Right for Jehovah, I guess. But I think these religious thinkers are right in principle, even if they never thought that principle would be extended to include individual value systems. So I mean to understand freedom of choice in my life as the freedom I get from choosing (limiting myself) what is good instead of bad in my idiosyncratic subjective way. That limiting freedom seems contradictory in essence and I think it is a problem made manifest by semantics and philosophy. I suppose our presuppositions, whether we get them from scripture or any other flawed source, can only be helped through discussion and reading.

@rcandlish I think the law about seatbelts is as much about money as it is about health. I'm pretty sure the statistics show that the national health is better protected with seatbelts whereas many anecdotes tell us (honestly, I think) people were, or would have been, better without them. Just like with cigarettes, the health services save a fortune by people in general obeying these laws. Thanks for a very good topic!

brentan replies on Oct 29, 2018:
That's so that you get the point. Get it, the point? You're right, that's stupid. On a serious note, I can't tell whether you can differentiate the two in this case. I mean, when the religion is allowed, they know what you're going to do. Or do they? Perhaps the likes of polygamy in Mormonism demonstrates your point. The religion had the freedom to exist but that particular practice had to stop.

Hopefully this a bit interesting. In the book I’m reading the two friends argue about a flower being either wolf bane or lupine. One mocks the other saying ‘You try to poison a wolf with lupine and he’s going to kill you. You city boys don’t know’. Being a city boy myself, I don’t know either but I’m curious because surely the word lupine has something to do with wolves?
