Wow there are soooooooooo many that qualify. Nancy Wilson of Heart. Slow Hand. Alvin Lee. Jimmy Page. The list goes on and on.

A lot are mentioning Clapton but none mentioning JJ Cale.

@gdboogietime74 ahhh the late great JJ.

I've had the pleasure of hearing a number of great guitar players in person.

It would be difficult to think of one more influential than Merle Travis (with the possible exception of Chet Atkins). Doc Watson definitely earned his status a legendary bluegrass picker.

Leo Kottke, Laurence Juber, Pepino d'Agustino, and Pierre Bensusan are/were amazing.

There are plenty of others that I am forgetting.

As far as the most amazing technical playing I have ever seen, that would be Musashi Suzuki (look him up).

But my personal favorite is probably Richard Thompson.

Tommy Emmanuel for technical, no?

@gdboogietime74, I saw Musashi Suzuki play in Long Beach. It was a small crowd, but there were a number of really good guitar players there. I lost count of the number of jaws on the floor. Not only was he pristine technically, he also played with amazing feeling. And he did this in multiple genres.

I hope he comes back from Japan sometime soon.

Too many to name. What genre?

A lot of good ones. Few great ones. I'm going to give props to Guthrie Govan who played on Steven Wilson's, Hand. Cannot. Erase. album. His guitar solo on Regret # 9 absolutely screams.

Joe Bonamassa

Tough one.

I've always liked Steve Howe, Angus Young, Steve Vai, SRV to name a few but there are a lot 🙂

It’s hard to pick one, but if I did, it would be from these five.

Terry Kath of Chicago. The only guitarist Jimmy Hendrix ever said was better than him.

2

The Godfather of Metal, the Riff Master, the Iron Man: Mr. Tony Iommi

For innovation: Link Wray.
For skill: Angus Young, Steve Vai.
For fantastic, beautiful sounds: Too many to list.

There are so many talented people out there. I can't possibly have a favorite. I will however recommend looking up Justin Johnson playing the e string shovel. I would post a YouTube link but my stupidphone outsmarted me every time.

2

Rory Gallagher

Me, but I can't play anymore. Just kidding. There have been many in all genres, but the ones who come immediately to mind are Clapton, Hendrix, Van Halen, B.B. King, Zappa, and Hooker. There are many more.

Living would be Slash. Dead would be Hendrix
