Have you ever lived somewhere you didn't want to and couldn't wait to get out?

Iowa. Moved there at the beginning of 7th grade, stayed for 8th. The people there thought they were so cool. I HAD TO ORDER A SKATEBOARD FROM THE BACK OF A MAGAZINE. That was 40 years ago. Now they've chased out all the smart people, and left a black hole. SHUT UP, KS, you were just as bad.

I can't wait to get out of Tennessee. I have been suffering here for three years as a caretaker for my 87 year old dad. I long to be back in the NW or SW. I hate the ignorance and stupidity of the south. Some good people here but overall backward and fundamentalist.

Gastonia, NC, where I currently live and have been stuck much too long. I refer to this area just outside of Charlotte as The Twilight Zone because a) 2/3rds of the county population is either illiterate or barely literate, b) it's home to numerous KKK grand dragons and wizards, c) it's over populated with bible thumpers and confederate flag wavers all on a personal duty mission to convert those who aren't yet, d) the diet is just so unhealthy and diabetes prone, e) mediocrity is usually the standard for excellence in medical care and academics, f) the culture promotes insincere and condescending personal and professional mannerisms as desireable sociable interaction standards/norms, g) the lack of adequate public transportation is stifling, and h) the rates of intellectual stimulation and intercultural activities are suffocating.
I so very much wish I could find a way to return to the West Coast and/or Northwest in a major city again. I'm so stifled and suffocating here liken to a fish out of water, considering I've now been in this area 20 years come this September and see no way out yet or soon. Thanks for asking this question and giving me the opportunity to release these facts to others who well understand because the folks around here certainly don't - I tend to speak to brick walls incapable grasping when I speak to most here about any or all of these matters. Subsequently, I've become pretty much a loner due to a lack of potential friends with similar/equivalent intelligence, interests, and communication abilities.

I can relate to your post. I have lived in the West most of my life but am now in exile in the south due to taking care of my 87 year old dad. Tennessee is incredibly backward and ignorant and controlled by fundamentalist thinking in all forms.

Feeling that way about Gulfport Mississippi. Everyone in the household can't wait to leave. Hoping we can afford to move in June. There is NOTHING here. Flat, ugly, boring, religious, conservative, ignorant & undeveloped. It's cheap to live here but hard to make enough money to do so.

Yes I did in Denver _ California girl and they had two of the worst winters in history. But My man was growing forward in his profession. We did leave (California boy too) for warmer parts

Groton, CT in January. Just not for me.

Florida, I loathe the heat, rednecks, reptiles, and bible thumpers

Sounds like Mississippi minus most of the reptiles. Even the reptiles got bored & left I guess.

Yes! Dallas, Texas area. Mostly because of a bad relationship but when I moved there I hadn't planned on being there very long, especially not almost 30 years! Lol

Lol, I came to Florida for a short stint in 85, still considering leaving🙂

@ArdentAtheist See, that shit just happens! Lol

Where I grew up in Lawton, Okla. For me, good place to grow up, but I left the day after I graduated from high school. It was not a good place to stay as an adult. It was a great move for a lot of different reasons. The repercussions from that move changed my life and the lives of people around me, especially my brother's.

Oh Lawton, Ft. Sill. Been there and left.

@MattTeter1 Good Idea. I did love the Wichita Mtns. When l was growing up there, You could swim in all of those small lakes in the Wichitas and there was no curfew. I had to go back there in the 90's for a little while, and all of that changed, You could only swim in Lake Lawtonka.

I'm in Chicagoland right now.

Not sure I'd want to live in a place where the snow and rain arrives horizontally, although I'd still like to visit, I like big cities.

@clarkatticus The grass is always greener, as they say.

@clarkatticus @chuckleslll, Chicago has some interesting places to visit but like so many other big cities or places of interest it's one thing to visit, and another whole thing to live there.

@BeeHappy , true. My fave is the Science & Industry museum but I've seen everything there. Now I want to live by the beach.

@chucklesIII Lake Michigan? ?

@BeeHappy , It's usually too cold to enjoy it, not to mention the price of just parking within 5 miles of it.

@chucklesIII you need to visit the east side of the lake. Beautiful sunsets, sandy beaches, no charge parking, still cold but once you're in... fantastic! Ok, maybe I'm partial. Born and raised in Michigan. Left over 35 years ago but have been going back for the summer the last few years. Love spending time on the lake. ?

Yes, Dresher, PA...and no because the city / people but for the distance to my job.

Yes, Seattle was depressing, especially in winter.

I called the endless gray skies and drizzle "Seattle's incontinence."

@ToolGuy

Seattle has three weeks of summer: in August.

I got friends on Whidby Island (sp?) They love it, but they are gay and one's an artist, both are wealthy so...

Yes, I did once. Then I ran away from home for good. Well, for 3 years.

Youngsville, NC, just north of Raleigh. I didn’t know anybody, except my ex, whose house I had moved into. I always felt alone and abandoned there.

Very small town ....

@Bigwavedave it is. Grew a lot the ten years I was there, but still small! Wake Forest was nice, and the lake Jordan/Falls Lake areas.

It was called Lawton, Oklahoma. I landed at the military hospital after an accident and spent 9 months in the faculty (which was actually fun - semi-private room, being waited on by cute nurses, lots of food and tv and some interesting room mates). 3 years later by pure coincidence a woman I was courting moved there to go to school. I followed her and enrolled in school. We got married and had a daughter. But it was boring and the constant canon firing at night (Ft. Sill was an artillery branch) finally got to me. We stayed 1 1/2 years and then escaped back to Germany. What a breath of fresh air.

Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Lynchburg va. Home of Jerry Falwell.

Why is it called "Lynch" burg?

@JackPedigo I can't recall. I think there was a Lynch's ferry on the river.... place is full of nut jobs.

I am soooo sorry for you...
