Someone said that even if you don't believe in God, it is advisable to live your life as if there is a God. What do you think of that?

By observation I can see most people are acting good on their own but I do feel like there should be a clearer set of rules that would define morality. People twist the meaning of the bible to suit their own needs of the time and frankly it isn't that clear. Trump is a good public example of how unclear morality from the bible is represented. Whatever is what he wants at the moment is of course, the best for all.

My hypothetical god is SEILENOS

🙂 God's knows you are cherry picking!!

Since half of the ten commandments are about worshiping god, as are 3 out of 4 of the pillars of Islam, I'd say no, I don't see any value in living my life according to their rules.

Who advises that and why? It's not that I'm curious at all... I just think that when people go around giving out unsolicited blanket advice as to how you personally and by extension the human race should live, they should at least finish the thought out of politeness. That they don't qualify such a grand conclusion is arrogant, pretentious and presumptuous. Also, why is this in the General & Hellos category rather than one more specific? Is that for the purpose of hitting as many viewers as possible, unsuspecting to see (perhaps because they don't want to see) religious/spiritual discussions in this category that isn't designated to be such? I personally made up my mind as to why I'm here, so as not to have to politely say no thank you all the time; to live my life without that and without having to explain myself. I don't go to religious sites to preach my way of life... I came here to be left alone by preachers and not have these kind of philosophical fishing expeditions posed to me, which I think is kind of passive aggressive.

I believe the opposite. You should be good to others because it is the right thing to do, not because you might burn in hell otherwise. With God you are allowed to do whatever you want as long as you apologize before you die.

2

I don't need a religion or god to be a good person. I'm not the best, but I do good without a thought of an afterlife. At least I don't condemn a baby to hellfire if it isn't baptized.

I don't know that character seems like a really bad role model if it means I should live my life in a humanistic empathetic way I have never needed a hypothetical role model to do so

This is a form of Pascal's wager.

it's pretty obvious that the socio/psychopaths that run the world don't subscribe to that idea.

Is that the same as all trump lies that start with "some people say...?" 🙂
I guess that would be that it's okay to kill people in the name of religion, that we should fear an all-knowing, all powerful and all-loving god... we get to blame anything bad that happens on us and all the good stuff is god's plan...
When I ask religious people now how their day-to-day life would change if there wasn't a god and they have no answer... your suggestion would be just as ridiculous as thinking there is a god.

ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN.....
but just to be safe & hedge
my wager; what else can I fantasize
about...

Oh come on, Yetty does exist. I've seen the grainy footage on the conspiracy sites.
🙂

We can't find one because they live on the underside of our flat earth! ?????

@kensmile4u...I recently heard they be alive
and disputing science at every step;
AT least Neanderthals wanted to improve their lot in life...
Thanks

@kensmile4u, @David1955 ...CNN does documenaries?....My cable company

Based on the assumption that any God is so stupid that it wouldn't know you were faking it. It's not like gods are omnipotent or omniscient or anything. If there's anyone you can pull wool over their eyes, it's a God. Yes sir.

Welcome to the site William. People do not need a god to be good. The golden rule is a concept made by humans for humans. Gods are just relics of the past: born out of ignorance, fear, and superstition.

1

This would lead to all sorts of insanity, like reliance on "thoughts and prayers" instead of action, the general populace consumed by guilt and neuroticism and fear of majik, and diversion of money to "priests" and "shamans" who claim to have the keys to the spirit world. Nah.

1

Considering the variation in peoples concept and expression of "God" its a pointless statement. Too me what they are really saying is you should live your life in fear of "DAD". Which too me is the biggest bull shit aspect of religion.

I think knowing how unique we are in the universe, and how borderline miraculous it is for us to get to consciously be a part of it, aspiring to live a good life doesn't require pretending there might be a god.

3

It might be even better to believe god is just the universe, and that the the universe hates you and is trying to kill you at every turn. I'm sure believing this would make the world as it is make much more sense, and maybe motivate you to solve problems to defend yourself against this hostile universe.

Unfortunately the universe doesn't hate us. It just doesn't care. At all. Which always gives us the hope of solving all of our potential problems, and near certainty that ultimately we won't be able to.

I don't know, sometimes I think the universe does hate me, honestly I do.
🙂

@David1955 Lawrence Krauss made a comment (in a video somewhere on youtube, but I can't remember which one) where he said that it is odd that Intelligent Design proponents never tell us to quit cancer research because the cancer has been designed to kill us.

3

i think it's crap. first of all, which god? zeus? baldur? it is advisable to live as if you are a human among many humans among many animals among many living things among many elements on a delicate planet in a big universe. gods are at best useless and at worst destructive. live without regard for whether or not there are any gods.

g

That's horseshit. Easy one. Anything else? 🤓

Pascals wager.

As an extra comment here.
If, as the o.p. states, " it is advisable to live your life as if there is a God" then logically it is also condoning, promoting and advising, etc, they we ALL should behave as would this Abrahamic God, i.e. decide to send forth a massive flood and wipe out every living person save a few, commit genocide on neighbouring peoples and nations, commit rape and pillage with immunity, capture, keep and breed and sell slaves, etc, etc, the list is almost endless so I won't bother even trying to write the whole thing.
But I will add this, NO thanks, I'll stay a decent, Heathen Atheist, a Humanitarian and Humanist, etc, rather than following in the footsteps of an Imaginary, Vile, Genocidal, Ego-centric, Psychopathic, Socio-pathic Dictatorial Tyrant.

Total crap!

IMHO, pure and unadulterated BULLSHIT. Live each day as if it were your last, be good to yourself, kind and considerate towards others, take from life and nature no more than you truly need and ALWAYS give more than you take, that's the motto I do my darnedest to abide by.

1

Sounds like Pascal’s wager. This is a philosophical question, not religious. Bear in mind that Pascal is asking a philosophical question and it is necessary to understand the base upon which the question is being asked. If you look up Pascal’s Wager you will get a clear idea of what he is exploring.
