Davekp comments on Nov 10, 2018:
Yeah.. that was, unfortunately, my reality in general for the last decade.
Hmmmm.
Davekp comments on Nov 10, 2018:
Complex question with many possible bags to unpack. I've tried to answer it three different times now without success. So why keep trying you may wonder? Because of it's relevance to my place in time. I'll be 58 in six months and I suddenly have found myself single after 17 years. I am not really searching for a "significant other" but I am trying to envision just what kind of relationship I would be interested in should I stumble across a person with that light in her eyes. So... which comes first ? The choice or the compromise? I think I choose someone for their compatibilities with me as well as their differences. The compatibilities support my world view and the differences encourage me to change and grow. When these changes no longer sit well with my direction then difficulties arise and compromises are needed. I'm feeling as I get older my values and principles have become more entrenched so to that aspect, my tolerance to certain ideals is low.. don't want to acquire "stuff", can't stand racism or violence of any kind, etc...and would be deal breakers so to speak. The need to "get along" is not so imperative because the questions of children and some financial security are off the table. Of course I still have significant obligations to others but I now have more free range to make my life fun again for me if I make it so. Opportunity to be selfish a bit. Feels like a jumbled answer but it's a tough question for me at the moment because my thoughts are jumbled. I guess.. always be yourself and go with the flow you've created.. see who gets pulled into the current of your life and if they present new tributaries that appeal to you.. start paddling! Thank you for prompting this thought process. :)

The challenge is discovering what you can fix and what needs to be carried. If you cut everybody out of your life that did not take the time to understand or were not mature in their approach to your tragedy you can find yourself very alone at precisely the wrong time. As an aside.. who is this quote attributed to?
Putting this post in this group because I know people here have been very supportive.
Davekp comments on Nov 8, 2018:
Maybe you could arrange a Facetime or Skype chat with your friend before you go in person. This visual moment might help prepare you for the visit to the facility and take the sting or shock of seeing a once vibrant friend who is suffering. As for the face to face.. there will be striking changes from the person you knew.. some physical but also some personality.. just keep it real,, of course you will try to be upbeat but if you can't, you can't. Don't ignore what you are feeling in the moment. And if you do break down.. find something to laugh about through the tears and move on in the conversation. Your friend, from how you've described her, above all, will appreciate your honesty at all turns. She does not sound like an individual who tolerates sugar coating when the stakes are high. And lastly.. instead of a gift ( but something like a potted orchid is nice and it always feels a little odd to show up empty handed ) offer to help her tie up a loose end somewhere if possible. Offer to help complete a task that she is no longer capable of accomplishing in the future because of her condition. Something small but something tangible. She will be comforted to know that an obligation she is concerned about completing will be taken care of. (Maybe she has dry cleaning to be picked up and can't stand the thought of her favorite blouse hanging lonely in a shop.. or something. :) ) Above all.. keep in mind you are fortunate to be able to plan this get together. Many would sacrifice a great deal to spend time with a friend who passed suddenly leaving no chance for such affections to be shared yet again. Good luck
Beaverton delivers again.

I'm confused! As non believers, why are people talking about celebrating Christmas? Hmmm
Davekp comments on Nov 7, 2018:
It's my understanding that before the concept of our modern Christmas vomited onto the scene.. the notion of bringing something from outside into your home .. the tree.. or mistletoe, as examples ..was meant to help align the spirit of your humanity with nature during what are the longest nights of the year. Very pagan. I personally love a tree with a tasteful soft glow of white light and a few meaningful ornaments from my childhood. I would not mourn the death of commercialism. In my opinion all gifts should be handmade. If you can't make a tv or dishwasher.. you don't get to give one for Christmas. That's what Boxing Day is for. :)
