@Trajan61 Well, to the extent that is true, aren't the teachers just reflecting a general trend in society? One that has been building for decades? In my view, we are in a better place than we were say, thirty years ago, when it was acceptable for privileged white boys to go out and beat up fags on a Saturday night. And if you really think about it, our old gender stereotypes are based on arbitrarily rigid conceptions of masculinity and feminity. Society, or at least a majority slice of society, has come to accept that there is nothing inherently wrong with someone choosing their own gender identity. Can we agree that the majority is not wrong on that issue, independent of educational pegagogy?

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 28, 2022:
@BD66 Well here's the thing: it is not unusual for ballot counts to be finalized a day or two after the polls have closed. Nobody should form a fixed belief based on the projections of TV pundits on election night. And since the election much analysis and recounting has been done, and it all points to one indisputable outcome: Biden whipped Trump, fair and square. Trump's operatives immediately began to spread lies, but all of those have been thoroughly debunked. And I will repeat what I said above. 1. We don't hear any Republicans who won their down-ballot races saying their victories are suspect. 2. Over sixty frivolous lawsuits Trump's lawyers brought were lost or tossed out of court, many by Republican-appointed judges. Some of those judges who ruled against Trump had even been appointed by Trump himself. 3. Trump's own hand-picked Attorney General said that Trump's claims of fraud were "bullshit." 4. And Trump's own cyber security czar said that the 2020 election was spectacularly clean. 5. Every recount has confirmed Biden's win. Cyber Ninjas spent months poring over the count in Arizona only to find that Biden had won by a greater margin than originally thought. These are meaningful data points. To think that what some TV pundits projected on election night somehow carries more weight than points 1 -5 above is just brain-dead stupidity, or willful ignorance, or a deeply cynical attempt to obtain by force what could not be gotten in a free and fair democratic process. Or it could be some combination of these. It sure ain't an fair and honest take on the 2020 election.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 28, 2022:
Wow, that is a total mis-characterization! I remember very well that we all stayed up late expecting to see Trump's early lead evaporate as mail-in ballots began to be counted. And what we hoped and expected would happen did happen. Biden won the popular vote with over seven million more ballots than Trump. And Biden beat Trump resoundingly in the electoral college as well. It was a landslide! Trump's petulant denial that he had lost was, though unprecedented, not surprising, since he had said for years that the only way he could lose was by fraud. Funny how that supposed fraud only affected votes in the presidential race. We don't hear any Republicans who won their down-ballot races saying their victories are suspect. Yeah, its funny alright, but funny weird, not funny ha ha. Equally weird is how many Republicans (not all) refuse to acknowledge the over sixty frivolous lawsuits Trump's lawyers lost or had tossed out of court, many by Republican-appointed judges. Some of those judges who ruled against Trump had even been appointed by Trump himself. And then there was Trump's own hand-picked Attorney General, who said that Trump's claims of fraud were "bullshit." And Trump's own cyber security czar said that the 2020 election was spectacularly clean. And then there are the recounts. Every recount has confirmed Biden's win. Cyber Ninjas spent months poring over the count in Arizona only to find that Biden had won by a greater margin than initially thought. And we are finally getting details on how a rumor of vote switching in one Minnesota county turned out to be nothing more than a simple human error that had been immediately corrected. Even though Trump's operatives were repeatedly told by the experts they hired that there was no fraud, they kept insisting that there was. And so a new religion formed around a pack of lies.

I know that Vladimir Putin, on his own authority as a bloody dictator has said that Ukrainians are not Ukrainians, that their nation has no right to exist...its a an authoritarian fever dream. I know that Russia invaded Ukraine, not the other way around. I know that Russian soldiers have committed many atrocities against Ukrainians in the last two months. And I repeat, Mad Vlad is a thief and murderer, not a statesman. How does a KGB agent become one of the richest men in the world? By sitting at the apex of a crime syndicate with sovereign borders. And this is not his first round of war crimes. He did it in Syria too, bombing civilian homes, hospitals, and schools. But this time he bit off more than he can chew, and it will he his undoing. First of all, Biden did not cause this inflation. It is due to fiscal policy going back decades. Trump's big tax giveaway to the rich did way more to blow up the deficit than Biden ever did. And then there was the Iraq War, totally unnecessary, costing trillions, started as a matter of choice, on false pretenses, by another Republican president. Second, I happen to agree with Biden's policies. Climate change is an existential threat not only to our country, but to all human civilization. Gas prices have been subsidized for way too long. Let fossil fuels compete on a level playing field with green energy, and we will see a cleaner, safer, more productive, more prosperous future. Stick with the status quo, and we descend into a dystopian maelstrom of climate disaster and war over dwindling resources.

That may be true about "nationalism" or "racism" or "imperialism", but I do not see anything wrong with being a patriot. (Questions: Are all those Ukrainians who are now fighting for their freedom scoundrels ?)
Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 22, 2022:
@Matias According to Boswell, "...'patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel’ was not, in fact, a denunciation of patriotism in general but rather a very specific reference to what Johnson considered the false use of the term ‘patriotism’ by William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham. Johnson actually valued patriotism as an idea, but he was – probably quite rightly – suspicious of those who use the word to describe themselves without following up such a label with any meaningful actions." This is consistent with my interpretation. Trump is a scoundrel who PRETENDS to love America, but in reality is only interested in what benefits him personally. With his long history of bad acts, his best chance at staying out of jail is by playing the part of a patriot, thereby gaining enough political support to become president again, in which case he would be shielded from prosecution, and he could pardon his partners in crime. Failing that, a certain level of political support may be enough to dissuade prosecutors from indicting him. Either way, a false display of patriotism is all he has to fall back on now.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 22, 2022:
Johnson is not saying that there is anything wrong with patriotism. On the contrary; he is recognizing that patriotism is such a laudable emotional state, so venerable in the minds of the people, that a scoundrel who can convince the public that his words or acts are rooted in patriotism can essentially get away with anything. Johnson could have chosen other words, such as "nationalism," or "racism" or "imperialism" in place of patriotism, but he didn't. Maybe it's because, within the borders of a given country, especially one as diverse as the USA, patriotism is as close to universally admired as anything can be. More than nationalism (which usually excludes certain minorities), or racism (which is all about exclusion), or imperialism (which is an aggressive policy that may or may not be popular at home). Samuel Johnson is famous for compiling one of the first dictionaries of the English language. While his semantic sense was not perfect (whose is?), I think in this case his word choice was spot on.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 19, 2022:
@holdenc98 Actually, he is right; there is no biological basis for what we call "different human races." In fact, there are more phenotypic differences among the individuals within a so-called racial group than there are between supposed "different" groups. It's important to get that straight at the outset of any discussion on race. Why? Because it obviates any temptation to ascribe different sociological or cultural differences to genetic differences. There simply are not enough genetic differences between, say, blacks and whites to explain the huge disparity in incomes, personal wealth, general health, representation in positions of power, etc., etc. So how do we explain these differences, if not by referring to genetics? Well, that's complicated, but any honest attempt to understand how we got here must certainly include a frank acknowledgement of trauma and systematic withholding of opportunity. Slavery was traumatic for the enslaved. The campaign of terror waged by the KKK on black people for generations was traumatic. (Imagine that your uncles and/or brothers were lynched, or your entire town was attacked by by a mob because of the color of the skin color of its inhabitants.) People do not get over such abuse overnight; it might take generations. And recovery takes even longer if those generations are systematically discriminated against in jobs, housing, education, access to medical care, etc. And so here we are. As I said earlier, we will not get past this history until we address it head-on, frankly and honestly. When we do, we will finally live up to the ideals that the founding fathers laid out in the Constitution.

Only philosophers and theologians seek truth. We scientists seek models. And models are not the truth. ***TL;DR: anytime you see anyone promoting "truth", you know they are lying.*** 😏
Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 19, 2022:
Hmmm... I understand your caution, but I'm inclined to allow the word "truth" to be used in describing what science uncovers, or the models it develops (at least in certain contexts). Let me explain. Take, for instance, the theory of plate tectonics (a model), which explains why the continents look like they once fit together, why there are volcanic mid-ocean ridges running all over the world like the stitching on a baseball, why the Pacific Ocean is ringed with volcanoes, why fossil mollusks are found near the top of Mt. Everest, and many more interesting facts. The theory explains that all these facts thusly: the Earth's crust is composed of relatively rigid plates that ride around on convection currents in the mantle, sometimes colliding and sometimes pulling apart, sometimes subducting. Now compare that scientific explanation with a religious one (there are many, but we'll use just one for now) that it replaced, which said that volcanoes and earthquakes are the result of the god Vulcan working at his forge in the underworld. The contrast between the two explanations is stark. And one of them is true, while the other is definitely false. The theory of plate tectonics is rock solid and, while it is constantly being updated around the edges, it's basic premises are not going to change. It represents the truth about the origin of earthquakes, volcanoes, mid-ocean ridges, etc., at least when compared to any of the religious tales that preceded it. We can say the same thing about Darwin's theory of evolution, which has withstood all challenges for 150 years and can be described as truth when compared to the false explanation for the origin of species given in the Bible. So yes, I'm going to allow the word "truth" to be used to describe science, at least in some cases.

@Triphid Murdering one's wife, 3 kids, and dog because you think the Apocalypse is coming is crazy on its face. However, it is not for you or me, but for a criminal court to decide on a remedy. Even if the defendant's attorney tries to build an insanity defence, there is no guarantee that it will fly. If a jury finds that the guy knew what he was doing was wrong, he will be held criminally responsible. That would not necessarily mean that he wasn't mentally ill. Personally, I think that a crazy act like murdering your family is bound to be rooted in mental illness. That's my opinion based on the slim set of facts presented in the link article.
