And he/she can point out that where religion contradicts science, there is a glaring lack of evidence to support the religious position. The teacher can do this, but there will be push back from religious students, parents, and administrators. They will do their best to get that teacher out of the classroom. And they will play dirty.I know whereof I speak; I have first-hand experience of this.

He tried very hard to take health insurance away from millions of Americans, and had NO plan to replace the Affordable Care Act. He gave a big tax cut to the richest 1% and did jack shit for the common man. Our infrastructure is in worse shape than when he promised to fix it. He fucked up the only deal that had Iran halting their nuclear program and allowing international inspectors to verify compliance. He created a huge mess by separating kids from their families; they still don't know where some of them are. He continues to deny/ignore climate science while the fires rage and the floodwaters rise. @Trajan61 I think you misunderstand the progressive liberal platform. Everything is not "free." Higher taxes on the rich pay for things like college tuitions, medical research, and infrastructure. The savings gained by removing the profit to insurance companies pays for medical care and prescription drugs. And there are also big savings resulting from doing healthcare proactively, instead of reactively (where people wait until they are really sick before seeing a doctor and wind up in an emergency room, THE most expensive care there is). And transitioning off fossil fuels has been shown to yield big savings too, because green technologies are not only cheaper and more efficient, but they also don't pollute the environment with substances that cause global warming and make people sick. And building the smart grid and green power systems will create millions of jobs. And all of this will happen in a system that is not that much different than the one we have now. It would NOT be a Soviet-style command economy, but a better-regulated, socially conscious form of capitalism.

But for the Republicans, held hostage by their fear of Trump's base, terrified of losing their next re-election bid to a primary challenger, attempting to use American treasure extort a political favor from a foreign country is no high crime or misdemeanor. I truly hope that this country realizes its potential for good, that it becomes the beacon of fairness and right that in has so haltingly aspired to. But if we turn to fascism, and continue with racism, imperialism, class warfare, and, perhaps most importantly, war on the natural environment, then I think it would he better to halt the experiment. I don't think the world can stand much more of our "leadership."

My folks are in their 80s now but just as sharp as ever.

@SeaGreenEyez Leave it to a Mormon bishop to claim that the question of the origin of species cannot be definitively answered! He is dead wrong! We know with certainty how new species come into being. The process is called Darwinian evolution. There are still some open questions about the details of the very first living cells, but no one in biology thinks it was in any way magical or divinely inspired. There is plenty of evidence that simple inorganic compounds can give rise to complex organic compounds, including amino acids, polypeptides, and RNA nucleotides. That's basically what you need to get life started. The reason we don't see abiogenesis occurring today is that the world is already full of hungry living things, which eat up any organics that might be lying around. Darwinian evolution is universally accepted among biologists. The good bishop is a physicist, not a biologist, so that may explain the gap in his understanding. Or he may just want to avoid the topic altogether because he does not want to deal with the controversy. He would not be the first teacher to take the easy way out.

@LimitedLight Ptolemy was just working off Aristotle's model. The Catholic church had interpreted it to signify confirmation that man (not woman!) was God's favorite creature. Ptolemy performed what could be called scientific contortionism, twisting Aristotle's model to fit observation. But it did not work. Copernicus was not convinced. Nor were Galileo or keppler. Ptolemy tried to draw inside the lines of religious dogma, and earned himself a footnote in the history books.

I suppose the main impetus for mentioning creationism in a science class is that it purports to explain an aspect of nature, and in so doing encroaches on the territory of science. And the religionists vigorously promote their half-baked ideas ad nauseum. The teacher has a choice: ignore this encroachment, or face it down. It is really not possible to fully ignore it. Students will invariably bring it up. What then? Ignore those questions and comments? It would look rather like you were running away from something.

Mentioning creationism in a biology class simply lends important context to the central subject, i.e. the science. To not acknowledge that there still exists (in some people's minds) doubt as to the veracity of Darwin's theory seems a bit like denial, or even cowardice.
