I'm afraid that for the MAGA faithful, you're right. They seem not to understand at all how the judicial system works: that you can lose your license to practice law if you bring frivolous lawsuits without evidence; that a grand jury weighs evidence before an indictment is issued; that prosecutors don't like to lose cases for lack of evidence (it's bad for their careers). The other day I had lunch with an old friend whose wife is an Evangelical Christian, and who has turned ever more right wing over the last 40 years of married life. We talked a little politics, and early in our conversation he made it clear, through indirect comments, that he deeply distrusts the judicial system. Finally I said, "If you have no faith in the judicial system, I would ask you this question:" He stopped me right there. "What do you mean? I have faith in the Judicial system!" I continued. "OK, well not you, but to anybody who says they distrust the legal system I would ask this question: do you keep your money in a bank, or in a mattress at home?" "Is that what you think of conservatives?" he asked. Then, without another word, he stalked off, got in his car, and drove away. We have been friends since 1976. Now I actually doubt that I will ever hear from him again. Is this crazy, or what?

@racocn8 Until I see solid, independently-verifiable evidence, I'm taking all claims of ETs, or intimations that UAPs are anything more than a fly on the lense or an elaborate hoax, as apocryphal. In my estimation, the likelihood of a technological civilization surviving long enough to achieve interstellar travel is vanishingly small. The only technological civilization we know of is far, far from achieving interstellar travel, but is very close to civilization-ending environmental catastrophe AND nuclear self-annihilation. And the distances are just so vast. The NEAREST potentially habitable planets outside our solar system are tens to hundreds of light years away. To get to the nearest star beyond our sun (Alpha Centauri), which is only 4 light years away, with current technology (rockets traveling at around 40,000 mph) would take about 60 to 70 THOUSAND years.

I very much doubt that technology that could take ET home exists on Earth. That would entail transport approaching the speed of light. Think about it: light from the nearest star outside our solar system takes over four years to reach Earth. To cross the Milky Way galaxy light takes about 100,000 years. To get to Earth from the nearest galaxy outside the Milky Way, light takes about 2.5 million years.

I don't have a dog in this fight. I'm not Jewish, Moslem, or Christian; I'm technically agnostic and functionally atheist. I find the core beliefs of all the Abrahamic religions to be more than a little ridiculous. I consider the fundamentalist extremists on all sides toxic and dangerous. I have no business with Israel, and I don't like Netanyahu or his policies. I'm just an observer of this spectacle. I don't like how Israel has responded to October 7, but I just keep bumping into these facts: Up until the recent ceasefire, Hamas still had two or more brigades in the field, actively fighting Israel. Israel's desire to eliminate that threat once and for all is, if not totally realistic, understandable. The carnage visited on the Palestinian people would end instantly if Hamas were to lay down their arms and release their hostages; Hamas is composed of Palestinian men; these Palestinian men are using their own people as human shields; the civilians being used as human shields do not denounce Hamas; they only blame Israel (and the USA) for the cruel usage by their own fathers, brothers, and sons; the Palestinian position vis-a-vis Israel has not changed since the Idea of partition was first proposed nearly 100 years ago (i.e. that a Jewish state must never exist, that it would represent "nakba" (catastrophe); The partition proposal may not have been perfect, but it seemed fair; the two sides would have gotten roughly equal amounts of land. the Palestinian position is in conflict with a United Nations mandate; the phrase, "from the river to the sea" that we are hearing from protesters today still means what it has always meant: that if they had their way, there would be no state of Israel between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea. I cannot help thinking about how things might have turned out differently if the Palestinians had decided to work within the framework of the United Nations. Instead, they engaged in terrorist attacks, decade after decade. There just isn't any patch of desert in the world that I would bomb a civilian bus over. Especially when it is obvious that such action will achieve nothing regarding the status of that land. Nor would I send missiles into civilian neighborhoods (something both sides have done). The Palestinians have stirred up enough passions to get Israel's neighbors to launch all-out wars against the Jewish state. In no case did the aggressors prevail. Israel ended up with more territory than before. Many Palestinians fled the scene. I'm not sure Israel is obligated to relinquish the land they gained or allow the Palestinians who left to return. The conflict has spilled over into many other countries, and has fueled radical Islam world-wide. It is indeed a catastrophe, and both ...

I want to read what those retrogrades .call reasoning. It may be something like “If we men haven’t always been doing it, women can’t start doing it now.”
Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 20, 2024:
"Retrogrades" is very good term for them. If you drill down into what they think, you will find a distorted vision of America that is full of made-up shit about the founders' intention that this be a Christian nation, and Christian ideology including some made-up shit about a fertilized human egg cell being a person, and a cherry-picked selection of patriarchal Old-testament ideas that would not even allow women to vote, much less end an unwanted pregnancy. It's all kind of incoherent but also quite dangerous, because they feel like violence is a legitimate way to achieve their political goals. They wrap themselves in the flag, and at the same time trample the very democratic principles that make this country unique and give it such potential for greatness.

Really? That's interesting, because... A. Prosecutors tend not to bring indictments that they can't prove up in court. It's bad for their careers if they fail to win a conviction. B. Five (🖐️)(5!) grand juries found the evidence they saw/heard so compelling as to make tRump stand trial. C. If tRump is so innocent, if it's all just a sham, then why hasn't he asked for a speedy trial? An innocent man would want to clear his name as soon as possible. But tRump has spent $100 million on delay tactics. D. For all the grand jurors and all the prosecutors and all the witnesses to be engaged in a vast conspiracy to bring down one man beggars belief. It's just too complicated, too improbable. E. All that complication and improbability is swept away by one simple explanation: tRump is, in fact, a criminal.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 11, 2024:
@Alienbeing Republicans love tax cuts, especially if they put more money in the pockets of the rich. But they worry about debt, an look around for cuts they can make to the federal budget. They don't want to touch defense spending, because that's their billionaire overlords' sacred rice bowl. So they focus their attention on Social Security and Medicare. Reagan set us on this path. Bush reinforced it with more tax cuts and a suggestion that social security be privatized. Trump amped up the 5ax cuts even more and suggested that we simply cut social security. So yeah, there is a link between trickle down economics and a desire (on the part if Republican presidents) to cut Social Security.

The wrong side? Or the wrong reason? I question the whole premise of the domino theory. It presupposed that a system that was economically inferior could keep on expanding without limit, and could only be stopped by force of arms. But what actually happened was quite different. Free trade and market capitalism have proven much more effective at liberalizing authoritarian regimes than bullets and bombs ever were. This is not to say that there isn't still a long way to go.
