I hadn't seen this for a while... and so, for the amusement and edification of the membership, I thought I'd post it before I turn in for the night. Originally on Snopes, where it has a rating of True. [snopes.com] The "Letter to Dr Laura".

"Thanks to her oft-aired opinion that homosexuals were a “mistake of nature,” radio personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger became one of the targets of pro-gay sympathies looking for someone to shake a finger at in the late 1990s.

Dr. Schlessinger attracted both adherents and detractors during her years of public life. Through her radio show, she dispenses advice to callers, usually from a conservative point of view. She was an Orthodox Jew at the time the letter quoted above was written (but she announced her renunciation of that faith on her show in July 2003) and often draws upon the Bible or religious teachings for guidance. She is blunt and forthright in her replies, viewing most situations as inherently black or white, right or wrong.

In 2000 the state of Vermont permitted homosexual couples to contract “civil unions,” an official recognition that imparted to same-sex partners the legal benefits of marriage, such as the right to be regarded by hospitals as their partners’ next of kin, to make medical decisions on behalf of their partners, and to file joint tax returns. This “everything that is marriage but the name” decision pleased some and angered others, resulting in many heated opinions about same-sex unions in specific, and homosexuality in general, to be bruited in countless public forums. Those looking for someone to crow at over Vermont’s recognition of same-sex unions quickly thought of Dr. Laura.

As a counter to the “homosexuality is wrong because the Bible says so” argument Dr. Laura frequently offered, Kent Ashcraft penned and sent her a letter that became an Internet-circulated piece after its author e-mailed a copy to one friend whom he thought would find it amusing. She in turn forwarded the item to several of her friends, and the letter went viral within a couple of weeks:

Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan."

still appropriate

She's still around? What a evil bitch!

3

Her radio station 640 KFI is still a radio version of Fox News.
I can’t listen to the bastards.
Especially John and Ken.
Hate radio.

I wonder whether it might be more effective, when stoning an unruly child, to stop short of the point of death, so you can later get some repeat value from the procedure if necessary? Or would that be considered cruel and unusual?

Dr Laura lost much credibility when the corpse of her mother was found after she had died alone and no one checked on her for months.

So much for family love and caring.

Some days are good for reruns. 😁

I remember this and it is a real classic.

I remember when this went viral. It's priceless and always deserves another round. Thx!

Nobody said it's easy being pious. (Although, in fairness, televangelists don't seem to find it difficult.)

Being a multi-millionaire always helps at just about anything.

@jlynn37
It gets you a private line to God too.

@nicestuff Private line and a private jet.

Do we have any record of whether and how Dr.Laura responded to this?

I doubt she ever acknowledged it. But was that really the point?

From what I've been able to glean from various sources, she didn't address the letter directly. But because she did receive quite significant blowback once the letter and her views gained notoriety and widespread circulation around June of 2000 (from 1998: I’m sorry — hear it one more time, perfectly clearly: If you’re gay or a lesbian, it’s a biological error that inhibits you from relating normally to the opposite sex. The fact that you are intelligent, creative and valuable is all true. The error is in your inability to relate sexually intimately, in a loving way to a member of the opposite sex — it is a biological error.) This blowback resulted in her running a full-page ad in Variety Magazine offering an apology for what she called “poorly chosen” words about homosexuality.

Born to a Jewish father and an Italian Catholic mother, Schlessinger was raised in Brooklyn in a home that was without religion. Schlessinger was not religious until her son and she started to practice Conservative Judaism in 1996. In 1998, Schlessinger converted to Orthodox Judaism. In July 2003, Schlessinger announced on her show that she was no longer an Orthodox Jew, but that she was still Jewish.

@Paul4747 No..of course not, but I just wondered if she had. It’s a very clever rebuttal of some of the completely imbecilic, not to mention murderous, instructions in the Bible, and I already gave the post top marks in the form of a happy face. I’m happy to do so again 😍

@Rossy92 Thank you for that feedback...so it did eventually elicit some response from her and an apology of sorts.

Out of Jurisdiction using the old testiment laws in countries other than Israel. They cite biblical text to use it as a precedent and reason for establishing current modern laws in countries out side of Israel.

Word Level 8 Oct 25, 2020

If the laws of OT aren't applicable outside of Israel, but precedent (based word for word on OT laws) is, then the laws of OT (including 10 Commandments) are being selectively applied outside Israel. Double speak (1984). Shouldn't the NT laws, or Beatitudes, be Jurisdictional outside Israel since Jesus is the Catholic savior? Why do CHRISTians not want to put The Beatitudes on govt property?

As usual, you completely missed the point; which is that barbaric rules from a nonexistent god some 6,000 years ago are irrelevant today.

The entire argument about it being just the “Old Testament” is flawed:

Jesus made reference to the Law and Prophets as a unit, "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill," (Matt. 5:17).

For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. (Matt. 5:18)

@BlizzardMan How many prophecies are there in the Old Testament that were fulfilled by Jesus? Scholars differ in their answers, generally ranging from about 200 to 400.

J. Barton Payne in his Encyclopedia of Bible Prophecy, gives a list of 191 prophecies that he deems as having a "personal reference to Christ."

Another scholar, Alfred Edersheim, concluded that there at least 456 passages in the Old Testament that Jewish Rabbis historically have interpreted as being about the Messiah. [about-jesus.org]

@Word

You should listen to Matt Dillahunty in what is required for a project to be real.

@BlizzardMan project to be real?

@Word

Sorry, Prophecy

I think one passage was misinterpreted, If a man should lie with another man as with a woman he should be stoned. Leviticus 20/13

Yes it seems that is not nearly as bad as wearing clothes made of two different threads. LOL

So if you have been smoking weed then it is okay?

The word "lie" can be interpreted here to mean "to deceive, to tell a falsehood, to tell a lie". A man can "lie" with a woman but not in the same way he can "lie" with a man. Men and women are always held to different standards in the bible.

@Happycanuck So did this Jeebus 'lied'/lay with his disciples when sleeping 'rough?'
Then IF so as claimed in the N.T. AND they WERE ALL males is it not also logical and reasonable that he too should have been stoned to death?
