I will be as brief here as possible. The news says O. J. Simpson has died of cancer at 76. There may be lots of reactions to his death in many ways. His 2 children with Nicole have went on privately with their lives and seem to be doing well. Simpson's death makes me wonder if Nicole's kids still hope that someday the real killer of their mother will be found. Make you a bet that deep down they both know.

Inescapable Death is our ultimate justice
And our memory in posterity our ultimate judgment

The ancient Egyptians believed that as long as your name was spoken or written, you existed in the afterlife. I hope that OJ's "legacy" is always tainted.

@Gwen_Wanderer Unless Ma'at weighed your heart against a feather and found you wanting, for then your soul would feed the unmerciful Ammit (part lion, part hippo, with the head and teeth of a crocodile) the consumer of the unworthy and your essence was gone for all time

@Gwen_Wanderer For his legacy not to be tainted people would have to start believing that the real killer was never caught.

@DenoPenno
That's how revisionist history works.

If you say Napoleon could fly, and I produce a testimony from some contemporary who says he COULD fly. Then history offers a possibility that he was able to fly.

This the seed left for future generations that grow in to blooming Alt. History

This is why even now history is forced to acknowledge Holocaust deniers exist, their ideas exist and therefore there is a school of thought that the holocaust was a myth.

Next to that OJ is just a tangerine.

@LenHazell53 true, but the beliefs of the Egyptians were varied and underwent change over the centuries. At first, only the pharaoh could attain the afterlife. Then, his family could also attain it. Finally, anyone could do so if they could afford to be embalmed.

They feared oblivion more than torture--this is why being fed to Ammut/Ammit was the worst thing which could happen to them.

The issue of the name still applies. This is why Hatshepsut's successor tried to remove her name from writings and statuary, etc., as did successors of other pharaohs. It is why pharaohs and commoners wrote their names in secret places.

And of course, being able to live forever also included a very difficult trek through Duat/Tuat. Everyone did not "survive" the trip.

Here is a video I made on afterlives for a myth class which I used to teach.

@Gwen_Wanderer
Thanks for that, coincidently some years ago I used to write lectures on British folk lore and myth for a late friend of mine in the US who taught a similar class on Myth and Legend.
Her name was Cynthia Ross and she died of cancer in the 2000's but I am glad people like yourself are still bringing this wonderful world of anthropological, cultural history and story telling to those of us who love it and endeavour to keep it alive. 🙂

@LenHazell53 my classes in myth were always full, but the school cancelled them because they were not part of the "regular" curriculum and would not transfer to a four year college/uni (this was at a community college).

I taught myth on the undergrad side at a uni and even designed the course. Then, I was moved "up" to teach graduate classes in Brit lit. The grad side does not have a myth course. And yes, I have asked my dean if there would ever be one, and he is very doubtful.

I also taught a class at the CC on Myth and Monsters. It was very popular until, again, it was cancelled.

Most people are interested in myth. On the flip side, I had a couple of students who dropped my courses because I taught the Bible as myth. One said she could NOT compare the tale of Noah to other flood myths because Noah was real and the other floods weren't. She got an "F" for the assignment.

I'm not sure. They were very young when they lost their mother (8 and 5) and I suspect their carers kept a lot of the hideous details from them as best they could, but then they were returned to live with their father after the trial. I've seen denial run awfully strong in people, particularly about their parents, so it may be buried so deep that they'll never be able to recover that thought which is probably a kinder ending for them.

I would think the kids would know deep down that he was guilty. I remember the look of surprise and disbelief on OJ's face they the jury announced the acquittal. He knew he got away with murder, and I'm sure his kids knew that too. Those are my thoughts.

9

My take is different. Yes, he did it and the absurd US justice system allowed him to walk. I think the same absurd system will allow Trump to do the same now. In the 90s I was living in Thailand. CNN was obsessed with this Simpson farce. I remember it. Then it became obsessed with Clinton and Lewinski and all that nonsense. I remember thinking that America was a country going off the rails, and in the 30 years since look what has happened. You can't even hold an election now without kicking the shit out each other.

13

Regardless of the fact of his guilt or innocent, Simpson had a long history of abusing women physically and mentally including stalking and harassment so as far as I am concerned, the world is a better place without him in it.

13

The man who committed the murders just died.

2

“Deep down”…..now that’s funny shit!! 😆

4

He hired someone.

I don't think so, and my reasoning, is that the nature of the murders was so personal and vicious, as far as how the two people were attacked and killed, that if it way more with a crime of passion and rage, rather than a cold-blooded hit by a stranger who was hired, unless OJ had specifically ordered it to be done that way, which, being the creep he was, is entirely possible. But I still feel that was less likely to be what happened..

Either way he would be responsible and as equally horrific

Yes there are a plethora of reactions from people ,and a good many of these people are delighted .

And I am one of them .This guy is a disgrace to the black community, and my parents were outraged when racist blacks cheered when he beat the rap .

@biguy12 You're not the only one. The woman I'm currently dating is black, age 72, and remembers well what a wife-beating, oreo, kiss ass to white America sort of black man OJ was, and told me it was good riddance as far as she was concerned. She always believed he was guilty and also was ashamed of how he was cheered on by so many black Americans back then..

7

I think they know and in the years since the OJ case, I think most black Americans have realized and even admitted, that OJ did the murders. It's just that at the time of his trial, following the beating of Rodney King and the cops who did it, getting a walk, that black Americans cared more about that injustice, as well as past injustices against blacks in the criminal justice system. So they were glad OJ beat the rap, even tho they knew he was probably guilty, because of that past history, and because the LAPD also planted evidence to frame him and Furman's racist behavior.

So nowadays, black Americans will admit OJ did it, because more time has passed, and also because they feel less defensive towards whites than they did then, about the criminal justice system, and also because recent years have forced white America to realize and accept the reality of how the criminal justice system, as well as many police, are racist.

OJ used Nicole like a punching bag for a long time. The cops knew and never did anything. I'm sure the kids knew too. They were not in a position to do anything. Well, it's good that the Juice is dead. I hope his kids can move on.

The POS was found guilty in the civil lawsuit for her murder and failed to pay the 35 million to the victims family . The lying lowlife.was also convicted of armed robbery and other felonies and served 9 years in a Nevada prison.Nicole Simpson was physically abused during the marriage with the photos to prove it .Simpsons ex-girlfriend ( Christie Brody )after Nicole’s death also stated she feared for her life and believed Simpson murdered Nicole and Goldman due to statements he made to her during the tumultuous relationship. Yes, you should feel sorry for his children because they had a dirt bag of a father that murdered their mother.

Well said

Terrible burden to have to carry through life.

Of course they know. I am so sorry they had to grow up without their mother, under the shadow of their father's guilt.
