HippieChick58 comments on Mar 29, 2020:
And that comes with the word Apoplexy. From Miriam Wester: Apoplexy Apoplexy is a now-dated term for what we now call a stroke, or the bleeding of an organ from hemorrhage. Both types of ailments were usually accompanied by a sudden loss of consciousness, as though the person was knocked out cold. So it makes sense that apoplexy derives from the Greek apoplēssein, from apo- ("completely") and plēssein ("to strike").

My ex makes me look like a social butterfly. After the divorce he has never dated. Each of the kids lived with him for a brief spell, and usually decamped in a rush. When you hit your limit with him, it is a brick wall. The company he worked for forced everyone over 60ish into retirement a few years ago so he is now home all the time. The youngest moved in with him with her husband and baby when baby was tiny so early 2017. Then her husbands mom hit a bad spot and she moved in as well. They moved out just before Christmas 2019, the youngest and her dad had words early one morning and she had her limit. He's alone with his xian website in a 3500 sq ft house with 5 bedrooms. He quit going to church when the Covid rumors started. Our middle daughter who has no kids is delivering his groceries etc. She is doing that for me as well.

Has the present crisis changed your retirement plans?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 26, 2020:
My retirement may be delayed. And because I am not able to work at home, my retirement may not ever happen. I work in an office of about 100 people, hospital billing, we're essential. Gotta keep the money flowing. And with HIPAA privacy, I am not sure how much we can do at home. I work the customer service side, answering calls of people with questions about the billing. Depends on the stock market recovery, whether or not we get M4A, and whether or not I survive Corona. I am 62, in fair health. I regard my office mates as elements of a germ cesspool that I must survive. No stress at all.

What it’s like being a New York ER doctor during this pandemic - The Washington Post
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 24, 2020:
By Craig Spencer March 24, 2020 at 12:27 p.m. CDT Craig Spencer is director of global health in emergency medicine at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. NEW YORK — Wake up at 6:30 a.m. Priority is making a big pot of coffee for the whole day, because the place by the hospital is closed. The Starbucks, too. It’s all closed. On the walk, it feels like Sunday. No one is out. Might be the freezing rain. Or it’s early. Regardless, that’s good. Walk in for your 8 a.m. shift: Struck by how the calm of the early morning city streets is immediately transformed. The bright fluorescent lights of the ER reflect off everyone’s protective goggles. There is a cacophony of coughing. You stop. Mask up. Walk in. You take sign-out from the previous team, but nearly every patient is the same, young and old: cough, shortness of breath, fever. The staff is really worried about one patient. Very short of breath, on the maximum amount of oxygen we can give, but still breathing fast. You immediately assess this patient. It’s clear what this is and what needs to happen. You have a long and honest discussion with the patient, and with her family over the phone. It’s best to put her on life support now, before things get much worse. You’re getting set up for that when you’re notified of another really sick patient coming in. You rush over. He’s also extremely sick, vomiting. He needs to be put on life support as well. You bring them back. Two patients, in rooms right next to each other, both getting a breathing tube. It's not even 10 a.m. For the rest of your 12-hour shift, nearly every hour, you get paged: Stat notification: Very sick patient, short of breath, fever. Oxygen 88 percent. Stat notification: Low blood pressure, short of breath, low oxygen. Stat notification: Low oxygen, can’t breathe. Fever. All day ... Sometime in the afternoon, you recognize you haven’t drunk any water. You’re afraid to take off the mask. It’s the only thing that protects you. Surely you can last a little longer — in West Africa during Ebola, you spent hours in a hot suit without water. One more patient ... By late afternoon, you need to eat. The restaurant across the street is closed. Right, everything is closed. But thankfully the hospital cafeteria is open. You grab something, wash your hands (twice), cautiously take off your mask and eat as fast as you can. Go back. Mask up. Walk in. Nearly everyone you see today is the same. We assume everyone is infected. We wear gowns, goggles and masks at every encounter. All day. It’s the only way to be safe. Where did all the heart attacks and appendicitis patients go? It’s all covid-19. When your shift ends, you sign out to the oncoming team. It’s all covid-19....

She is NOT pleased I cannot work from home. She is 32 and has turned into my mommy. I got some work done on some of my projects, did some reading and spent lots of time online. And yes, I did the regular weekend chores; breakfasts and lunches are made for next week, laundry is done, some cleaning got done. I am making a quilt for the grandson as he moves out of the crib to a twin bed. I have all the blocks cut now, I just have to make sure I have enough blocks and don't need another trip to the fabric store. #2 would not be happy with me....

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 22, 2020:
What I am reading is that the virus measures 1 micron. In most hospital masks the pores are 3 micron. Homemade masks of regular fabric.... I am sure it is so much larger. Soooo, they will help but not completely. And as I see in the previous discussion - petrol pumps. YES, those are prime places for contamination. You block that sneeze with your hand and then don't wash and grab the petrol pump handle. You have just spread your germies there. So when I next use that handle I'm going to pick up those germies and then touch my face. BOOM, I have whatever is in your sneeze. From my reading - I am NOT a doctor but I work for a hospital and they are trying to educate us daily- the virus will stay airborne for about an hour. It will live on most surfaces for up to 3 days. Soooo wash, wash, wash your hands, and if a mask makes you feel better - go for it. My office tells us to wipe down our desks first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I am first in and last out on M, T, W, and Friday. I haven't seen anyone do it yet, not that I'm watching, but I also haven't incorporated it into my daily routine either.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
