How much do brand names matter?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
Velveeta is not real food as far as I am concerned, even though I grew up eating it. When I was eating store bought I ate only Skippy Peanut Butter, liked the flavor so much more. For the past 5 or so years I've tried to eat food closer to how it occurs in nature rather than boxed and processed food. Ingredient lists are scary reading.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
I'd blow through my retirement, take my kids on a cruise and spend some serious time with the grand babies. Then I'd volunteer for a suicide mission to change the face of the US to what I think will improve it greatly.
As atheists, how do you feel about fidelity, within a marriage or a long-term relationship?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
I don't share some things very well, and that would be one of them. I am a one man woman, and I want a one woman man. That could so be made into a country song.

I was at jury duty today (western PA, USA).
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
The day I got home from the hospital with my youngest child I got a summons for jury duty. I lived in Hampton, VA. I've always wanted to serve on a jury, but after a c-section and nursing a baby, that was not good timing. In the past year I received a summons for jury duty here in Omaha. They let you call in to find out if they need you, and I wasn't needed that day. Sigh. And said baby from the first time was 25 when I got the second summons. If they call me in another 25 years I'm likely to be dead.
Opposing Abortion and Stigmatizing Single Motherhood
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
I think if the catholics and other assholes were to have a supportive environment for single mothers they'd carry the baby and care for it. I agree, if the catholics and any conservative group wants the abortion rate to shrink they need to support women, PERIOD. Good job, no stigma for pregnancy, Women's issues are Human issues
A type of spirituality
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
When all else fails look up the definition of the word. Spirituality: the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things."the shift in priorities allows us to embrace our spirituality in a more profound way" And from Wikipedia: Traditionally, spirituality refers to a religious process of re-formation which "aims to recover the original shape of man," oriented at "the image of God" as exemplified by the founders and sacred texts of the religions of the world. In modern times the emphasis is on subjective experience of a sacred dimension[1] and the "deepest values and meanings by which people live,"[2][3] often in a context separate from organized religious institutions. Given those definitions I don't think what you're doing is necessarily spiritual. It sounds very satisfying but not necessarily spiritual. Very artistic. Whatever you do, don't stop doing it if it makes you happy.
So this is a thing.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
I am an anti snob snob. I rarely do fancy coffee (only when I head in to work overtime on weekends) Alcohol - don't drink beer, drink white wines or white zin and sweet is better and hard alcohol gets used for various things, I made Kahlua once and vanilla and ginger extract. Films, nah. Fashion? HAH! You really haven't seen my closet, I dress to be presentable and not scare small children. Music, nope, radio on adult contemporary. Foodie, not so much, I am quasi vegetarian, I just don't eat much meat or fast food. I am happy if other people find happiness in their distinctions, but I'm not going to play that game.
How many people here have lived overseas
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
I have lived on military bases in Okinawa and Germany. The challenge is the language outside the base. In Okinawa they taught us what the sign looked like for a pharmacy, those were strictly off limits. Apparently there was stuff you could get OTC that the US government considered a restricted substance. I really stuck out in a crowd in Okinawa, I was taller than most of the population and blond. Germany was cool, I was there both single and married. Again the language was a barrier, but I could pass unnoticed in a crowd as my forebears were Germans. Both places I loved to eat at local places, loved to explore. Being young and stupid had advantages, I never realized how crazy I was just taking off and exploring and got back to where I belonged by mostly dumb luck.
Midlife crisis?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 26, 2018:
I got a divorce. My ex attributes it to menopause and the fact that my mom died about the same age I was at the time when I decided to move in that direction. Because of the divorce I also had to get some education to be able to get a decent job. And now 15 years later here I am. Reasonably good job, content on my own, kids are doing well. Life isn't perfect, but I'm not waking up and falling asleep trying to plan the perfect murder.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 25, 2018:
I started college in my late 40s because I knew I would be getting a divorce. I had been a stay at home mom for more than 20 years and my previous job skills were not applicable in the civilian economy. I knew I needed some decent job skills. Soooo yeah, just attending college knowing the direction I was going, and the uncertainty, and knowing I had to support myself was scary as hell. In fact, I did find a good job not too long after I got my Associate's degree. And then the economy tanked and so did my job. So all my worst fears came true. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and I'm Hercules!

Burn that baby!! I never advocate burning books but this is one instance where it is required. Your father isn't in hell because he's dead, and we're in hell here on earth because of stuff like that. The dead are blissfully unaware, you've had someone tap dancing on your emotions. So burn that book and roast a hot dog in the flames, and wash it down with a couple of beers. Remember the good times with your dad and sweep the ashes into the dust bin.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 25, 2018:
I hardly know any of my neighbors, but I work long hours and I'm not a social butterfly. Garage door openers have killed neighborliness. And right now most of my neighbors are likely pissed at me. I don't shovel the sidewalks. Long hours and it is dark when I get home. And I figure the sun will do it sooner or later, my house faces south so I only need a day or so of sunshine.

My caveat being it has been a very long time since I slept with anyone that didn't have a fur coat and weigh more than 11 pounds. My preference when I was in a relationship was same bed and start the night snuggling. It has been so long since I've had a sleep over I don't know if I would be able to sleep with someone anymore. HippieChick58 comments on Jan 25, 2018:
My aunt kept EVERYTHING. She was born in the 20s, lived through the depression. After she passed my sibs and I had to clean out her house. She had gifts she never took out of the box. She had three old manual typewriters. She had every Reader's Digest Condensed Version ever printed. She had an opened bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream. She had over 200 paper bags full of paper back books. She never married, never had kids, and lived in her house for over 40 years. She had bank records, and papers and clothing still with tags on, and the car she could no longer drive because they took away her driver's license. That car sat in the garage for at least 10 years without ever being moved. It was craycray, and I will not do that to my kids.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 23, 2018:
Allllll day long we have to make judgments. Will I make it through that traffic light before it changes? Will I be able to stop before I hit that Cadillac in front of me. I make multiple judgments an hour in my job. I choose my clothing for the day on whether or not I will be sufficiently warm in my office or house. When I meet people one of the first things I notice is teeth, (weird, I know) and there are a few judgement to be made there. Yes, I can allow others to be who they are, but I am also judging them. Judgement doesn't necessarily mean a negative thing, it is more assessing information. Our ancestors had to rely on split second judgments to stay alive, as sometimes we do (stopping distance).

Homelessness... what are the solutions?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 23, 2018:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25852784-evicted This book was so enlightening, how laws and rules are created to help keep poor people poor and sometimes homeless. Did you know in certain zip codes if you are a renter and call 911 the police will complain to your landlord, and by complain I mean they will strongly suggest that the landlord evict you using nuisance laws. The poor pay a greater portion of their income on rent than the general population. Most marginal housing rents are exorbitant for what you are getting. As to what to do, there are many possible solutions. One is tiny house communities. Provide small efficient homes to the less able community. That will help them find some stability to move up. Mental health treatment needs to be unstigmatized and treatments need to be more available. And substance abuse also needs to be unstigmatized. Treat the underlying problems, but you need stability of housing to do this. I don't know all the answers, but I know the US has the resources to make a huge dent in the homeless issue, if only that is where our resources were directed instead of giving more money to the already rich.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
