Canada's top doctor says non-medical masks can help stop the spread of COVID-19.
HippieChick58 comments on Apr 11, 2020:
I made a bunch of masks for me, family members and some family associates. I wore mine when I went into Target to pick up a prescription (and found out they do deliver) and some other groceries. I offered some to coworkers, and they declined and scoffed (and yes I work with morons and mean girls.) I keep mine in my car and only use them when I am going from car to anyplace beside the office. After I wore one to Target I brought it into the kitchen, washed it with soap and hot water, then took it to the sewing room and steamed it with my iron. My employer (a hospital) is asking for homemade masks, but they had some hoops to jump through, the fabric could not be over a year old. I have fabric as old as my kids, and most of it I'm not sure exactly how old it is. So I did not make any for them. I did find I had a good amount of elastic in my stash, and I don't know how old that is either, but it still had stretch.

The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!” He took his vorpal sword in hand; Long time the manxome foe he sought— So rested he by the Tumtum tree And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. “And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” He chortled in his joy. ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.

Nope, YOU are not a failure. You may have had some failures, haven't we all, but that doesn't get to define you. You've raised some children to adulthood, that is a success. Don't measure yourself by someone else's yardstick, find your own to measure yourself by. I'm 62, I got divorced about 10ish years ago. I am definitely not as well off financially as I was when I was married, but I have way more peace of mind. I have an "interesting" work history, some short tenures, and current job is on shaky ground, but I'm not a failure. I've been mostly employed most of my life, just not always gainfully. On the other hand, I have amazing, well adjusted kids, many interesting creative works that I have made. And the most important thought I have for you is this, and the caps are for emphasis. Tattoo this on your subconscious - FAILURE IS NEVER FINAL!!! You get up, dust your britches off, and take a step in a new direction. You're only a failure if you quit trying, except for dating sites.
So how is everyone doing?

HippieChick58 comments on Apr 5, 2020:
If this is a person you don't already know well it could be a disaster of epic proportions. Forced intimacy for long periods of time tends to bring out the worst in us. Now that you are alone, you have time to read all those books you haven't had time for, deep clean your home, watch every movie you ever wanted to watch. OK, I'm an introvert at the best of times, I live alone (2 feline companions) and I'm not bored. I made about a dozen face masks and I have 2 quilts in progress, 3 books in progress, one jigsaw puzzle, several crochet projects and yes I need to do serious cleaning. I am never bored. Now if the electricty goes out it may be a different story, but I still have projects that don't require electricity, just need daylight.

HippieChick58 comments on Apr 5, 2020:
I made about a dozen masks this weekend, and just watched most of them walk out my door. My daughter requested the masks; for her, for her partner, for his mom, and for her dad (my ex.) I also made several for me as well, I've used both elastic and ties. Because I wear hearing aides and glasses, the ties are much better for me. I made ties for her partner's masks because he is a big guy and he has a full beard and really long hair. I've been sewing and quilting most of my life, I have a stash of fabric and was glad to put more of it to use. And then I also had to find my bias tape tool for the ties. It ended up a very productive weekend.

I don't "hate" religion, I hate what it does to people. Essentially it comes down to because I don't believe like you do, you are going to use your authority to prevent me from having the same freedoms you do. For example: Your religion says I can't wear pants, so you want to cover myself from head to toe. I hate that people who haven't read the damn book are trying to persuade me that the book says. Yes, I've read that damn book 3 times. I hate that the religious pick and choose what they want to enforce of what they think their book says. Walk away from it? How is that possible when the most godless man in the world is sucking up to the religious and making laws based on what they tell him that disastrously affect my life and the lives of children, women, and disadvantaged individuals. I am for whatever gives a person peace, but keep your beliefs out of my government and out of my life.

Here is a story to illustrate the necessity of gathering together, EVERY pastor knows this story. A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his pastor's visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a big chair near the fireplace and waited. The pastor made himself comfortable but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the play of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. The host watched all this in quiet fascination. As the one lone ember's flame diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and "dead as a doornail." Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. Just before the pastor was ready to leave, he picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I shall be back in church next Sunday." This is the same reason the military holds frequent "formations." and frequent sales meetings. It pumps you up and gets you charged up, and creates "esprit de corps". It is F--king brainwashing.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
