I live in Omaha, NE. I don't love it here, very hot summers/cold winters, conservatives in control, rich boy Repub governor, farm state, limited stuff to do. However, Sam and Austin are here, within 20 minutes of my house. Sam and Austin being my grandchildren. All my adult kids are within 30 minutes, and my sister/BFF is about 90 minutes away. I don't love it here, but what I love is here.

Anybody else planning slide gradually into retirement?
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 3, 2018:
My last job was very stressful, and I was not keeping up with the case load. Essentially they offered me micromanagement that would likely end in firing for cause or I could resign. I chose to resign. I have some retirement income from my ex, and an additional amount will begin as of 11/01. One of my kids has a small baby and she required surgery on her foot and would be NWB (non weight bearing) for some time (think holding baby and being on crutches). This was an opportunity for me to be available to help out and do my favorite job - Grammy. So, in a few months if I decide I need to I will look for a job that is low stress. All I am really looking for is health insurance to be covered. COBRA is almost $600 per month. However, I needed new glasses and the insurance paid almost $600, so I got a good value for this month. Also while I am off I am catching up on my projects and improving my health. I'm getting into better shape and losing weight. I'm liking retirement, but will play it by ear.
I'm in St.

Do you think you need romance to have love, or can you have love without romance?
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 2, 2018:
Word nerd that I am I had to get the definitions. Love is characterized as a powerful attraction and personal commitment and sacrifice. Attachment or affection in love are not limited to human beings and extend to other entities like animals, things, and ideas. Attachment results in a very powerful connection and bond between two entities. Love can exist in many forms and be manifested in many ways. Forms of love include: non-romantic, unconditional, and romantic love. Manifestations of love can vary from simple to grand gestures. In contrast, romance is referred to as the actions or gestures in the context of a relationship. These gestures are done and seen as an outward expression of the feelings of a person towards another. It is also seen as a tool to prolong and reinforce both the relationship and the bond between two individuals. Romance also develops the romantic love in a potential couple and reinforces the connection. In this situation, romance improves the potential for a couple to be in love. So to play with that, love is the powerful attraction and personal committment, romance is the actions or gestures. Therefore, you can have love without romance. Romance makes it more fun, deeper, a more outward expression of the love.

If you could know the exact time of your death, would you want to know?
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 2, 2018:
Nope. My mom died at 45, I'm now 60. I have long figured I'm on borrowed time. I know how ephemeral life is and I live that way. Everyone who matters to me knows what I think of them. I don't think I have any unfinished business. If I die today my kids are going to struggle a bit because I'm not well organized, that is one of my goals for my current semi-retirement status. I don't want to know when I will die, that will only be a burden I don't want right now. I KNOW I will die sometime and I am fully aware of that, knowing the date would be pressure I don't want.

HippieChick58 comments on Oct 2, 2018:
I got Xena from PetsMart. Our local Humane society works with them, so their kitten are Humane Society rescues. Xena has so mellowed from what she was like at PetsMart. When I first got her she did not want anything to do with being under my covers. Now she loves to get under the covers and play. When I was looking for apartments (7 or so years ago) I avoided any that did not take pets. My fur babies are way too important for my peace of mine to live without them. My brother in law made some comments about how much they are costing me, and I let him know they were worth that and more!

Kavanaugh is lying. His upbringing explains why. - The Washington Post
HippieChick58 comments on Oct 1, 2018:
Brett Kavanaugh is not telling the whole truth. When President George W. Bush nominated him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 2006, he told senators that he’d had nothing to do with the war on terror’s detention policies; that was not true. Kavanaugh also claimed under oath, that year and again this month, that he didn’t know that Democratic Party memos a GOP staffer showed him in 2003 were illegally obtained; his emails from that period reveal that these statements were probably false. And it cannot be possible that the Supreme Court nominee was both a well-behaved virgin who never lost control as a young man, as he told Fox News and the Senate Judiciary Committee this past week, and an often-drunk member of the “Keg City Club” and a “Renate Alumnius ,” as he seems to have bragged to many people and written into his high school yearbook. Then there are the sexual misconduct allegations against him, which he denies. How could a man who appears to value honor and the integrity of the legal system explain this apparent mendacity? How could a man brought up in some of our nation’s most storied institutions — Georgetown Prep, Yale College, Yale Law School — dissemble with such ease? The answer lies in the privilege such institutions instill in their members, a privilege that suggests the rules that govern American society are for the common man, not the exceptional one. [Can truth survive this president? An honest investigation.] The classical root of “privilege,” privus lex, means “private law.” The French aristocracy, for instance, was endowed with privileges, primarily exemption from taxation. Today’s equivalents are not aristocrats, yet they have both the sense and the experience that the rules don’t really apply to them and that they can act without much concern for the consequences. Elite schools like Georgetown Prep and Yale have long cultivated this sensibility in conscious and unconscious ways. What makes these schools elite is that so few can attend. In the mythologies they construct, only those who are truly exceptional are admitted — precisely because they are not like everyone else. Yale President Peter Salovey, for instance, has welcomed freshmen by telling them that they are “the very best students.” To attend these schools is to be told constantly: You’re special, you’re a member of the elect, you have been chosen because of your outstanding qualities and accomplishments. Schools often quite openly affirm the idea that, because you are better, you are not governed by the same dynamics as everyone else. They celebrate their astonishingly low acceptance rates and broadcast lists of notable alumni who have earned their places within the nation’s ...
