I have just started using internet dating. Filling out my profile, and looking at potentially matching profiles, has raised a difficult question (for me)...

As an agnostic atheist, can I have the right level of respect (required for a committed LTR) for someone who has religious faith? Or should I only consider the profiles of people who say they are agnostic/ atheist/non-religious?

How do you feel about this?

I was married to a Christian man for 34 years, it never was a problem. We both felt strongly on our beliefs but respected the others views. It was the only thing we did not see eye to eye on. As long as you have many other beliefs and interest in common I do not see why if you wanted to make it work, you could. It all comes down to respect. I would ask, how religious are they and would they date someone who is not, never hurts to ask.

All my family are xians and the scattered PUBLISHED Atheist cousins were hidden from me by my Pentacostal dad& Methodist mom.....Grover Cleveland Young a WDC lawyer wrote Capitol Plaza and John Matthews a Cherokee Atheist house painter died 5 blocks away from my grandmother her brother 96 yrs old in Des Moines Iowa. ...dad called him "a rattlesnake" I only remember seeing him wearing eagle feathers painting a cousins house when my parents were not there.....evil religion really screws over honest Atheists in countless families. ...wish I could have known my genetic Atheist peers back then....I would have started DIAL AN ATHEIST 9 years before 1983 with all the other American Atheist pioneers from Austin to Petersburg to Columbus to Salt Lake City AND DIAL A GAY ATHEISTS too

Think of inquisition and raping children. The essence of all religions. Respect?

Depends on how worried they're going to be about your "salvation". I think generally pretty risky, like differences in desire for children, someone will likely need to give...

Since I'm an Engineer, maybe I could tell a joke to lighten the mood and reassure them about my salvation...

An Engineer dies and goes to hell. He's hot and miserable, so he decides to take action. The A/C has been busted for a long time, so he fixes it. Things cool down quickly.

The moving walkway motor jammed, so he unjams it. People can get from place to place more easily.

The TV was grainy and unclear, so he fixes the connection to the Satellite dish and now they get hundreds of high def channels.

One day, God decides to look down on Hell to see how his grand design is working out and notices that everyone is happy and enjoying umbrella drinks. He asks the Devil what's going on?

The Devil replies, "Things are great down here since you sent us that engineer."

"What?? An engineer? I didn't send you one of those, that must have been a mistake. Send him back up right this minute."

The Devil responds, "No way! We are going to keep our engineer. We like this guy."

God demands, "If you don't send him to me immediately, I'll sue!"

The Devil laughs. "Where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

I found most people will say religion does not matter, but as time goes by it was always a problem for me. Even a man who attended A.A meetings felt he could not deal with my atheist outlook.

My Mom was a pretty strong Christian who believed in gaurdian angels, heaven, the whole nine yards. My Dad was a humanist. They lived long happy lives as a married couple. I wish I had've had some conversations with them about this topic. Worked for them. Might not work for others.

My own personal experience seemed to be that any type of real religious ladies did not work out past the first date.. just to different from me..

Get out there first, meet people, talk, then decide if it's really a problem, some people are more religious than others, some put their faith in their profile when what they actually mean is they only go for weddings, christenings and funerals so that could be bearable??

Definitely. Thanks!

Why choose both categories ? Obviously there are more beautiful believers than beautiful Atheists so if you choose both possibilities finding a mate who wants you will more likely succeed BUT AT WHAT PRICE ? HAVING children brainwashed by their mom, dealing with religious relatives/in laws ....having Jeebush geehobah ghostholes in your bed every nite with you 2....but believer women are out there attracted to your intelligence and alert look in your eyes not prone to treat them like bible property. ...spend more time talking to other Atheists and there
are minimal believers who are kind & giving especially xmas time hoping Santa slides down your chimney

Religion brings up complications in a relationship. I would steer clear but it's all in what you can handle and what type of relationship you have.

Well, how do YOU feel about it?

I think it depends on the person you're talking to. But people who consider themselves as open minded in their bio might be more open for a discussion.

If those thoughts trouble you now, perhaps you should ask each individual about their feelings when you start communicating with them. Honesty is important and hopefully you'll be able to figure it out. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to count on any guarantee.

OldGoat43 Level 9 Dec 30, 2018

Thanks. The engineer in me says filtering is more efficient. The conscience says if I was to disregard a profile due to the faith question, without discussion first, I would be a hypocrite.

That's got to be an individual decision you make for yourself. Everyone has different tolerance levels, as well as different levels on which they engage their beliefs. What works for some, may not work for you.

Amzungu Level 8 Dec 30, 2018

Thanks. That's what I am thinking at the moment. For me, it really comes down to showing respect for differing opinions and being open to calm, dignified discussion without trying to change the other person's views/beliefs. I lose respect for religious people who are intolerant of other people's religion/faith/beliefs REALLY fast.

@pmar074 I have never "converted" a believer never even try. ...teaching critical thinking is a learning experience like a fill in the blanks question on tests. ...requires intelligence while cults brainwash victims controlling every thought
