THE CASE FOR INDICTING THE PRESIDENT - Michael Avenatti NY Times [nyti.ms]

I have never understood what is so hard about accepting that our time on this earth is limited, like every other living creature, and when it is over, it’s over. Human narcissism seems to know no bounds. The idea that as humans we are so incredibly important that we should exist in some form forever. Even though we reproduce at an alarming rate, use and destroy natural resources at unsustainable rates, cause extinctions of other creatures by our greed among other wonders. If we make such a mess of our planet (millions of tons of trash floating around the oceans, millions of tons of pollution in our air), imagine a place where all the human population lives forever! No thanks!

It takes a special person to step into a disaster area and help people try to put their lives back together. Thank you for your service and I am sure the people you help will be eternally grateful as well; family, friends or strangers.

Some days are worse than others. My puppy helps ?! I have a lot of people (friends) who call when they need my help with something (frequently), but I rarely hear from otherwise. I am the guy many need, no one wants or cares what I need. I have gotten better at just accepting that and derive satisfaction knowing I can help them out. Love for some of us is just not meant to be.

I don’t eat at Chic-fil-a because there are none close by and the two times I did, I was not impressed enough to want to go back. I find myself more likely to boycott businesses that openly supported Trump than ones that promote their religion, though the two seem inclined to merge at this point. But like you, I might break with my resistance if it was a matter of convenience. If I went to a party and the only beer on hand was Yuengling, I would drink one rather than have none! In the case of Chic-fil-a I do have a certain admiration of the fact that the owner sticks to his guns and stays closed on Sundays, what could be their busiest day. I’ve known many religiously oriented businesses that, once they started making serious money, found profit more inviting than piety.

No. I much prefer to think back on time spent with the person who died. And reflect on what they had done or accomplished during their time on this planet. What have they left behind (children, grandchildren, a successful business, a legacy of humanitarian works)? These realities are far more worthy than the idea that somehow they are in some unknown place doing some unknown thing with billions of other dead people who they don’t know waiting for me to die to join them. I always found the whole idea of an afterlife to be kind of ridiculous. Where is it? What is it? Why would I want to go there?
Reincarnation or DNA Memory?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 4, 2018:
It is not reincarnation so much as evolution. The basis of evolution is that creatures evolve to best survive in their environment. For much of the animal world, certain characteristics evolve to best low them to fit into their environment; a camel evolved to go long periods without water making it able to survive the desert. A chameleon whose skin can change color became better at camouflage and evolved better. As humans, we have adopted many forms and sizes, skin colors and abilities. So your DNA would hold maybe not your memory of what happened to your ancestors, but the evolutionary qualities that allowed them to reproduce and thrive. So, to use the slave example, being able to run and evade captors, to have the spirit to be free, would be traits that could be passed on to future generations through DNA, and hearing history might trigger those same emotions, making it seem like a memory when it is just a reaction.
Is public groping assault if not consensual?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 4, 2018:
After my own experience, I have a tendency to be somewhat skeptical and open to the idea of “unintentional.” Years back, I used to go roller skating two or three times a week at a local rink. The vast majority of the time there were very few adults on the rink, and most of those were there with their young children. I was one of few there by myself. I was a fairly proficient skater and skated fairly fast when the music was fast, feeling I could react quickly enough to kids falling in my path or making unexpected moves. One evening, as I was going along at a pretty good clip a group of three young teen girls suddenly came out of the center of the rink directly in front of me. I did not have time to stop, and had I colided with them, I was substantially bigger and one of them might have gotten hurt. So I did my best to cut around them and used my hand to keep the one on the end to my side and out of my skates. No one fell and I continued skating, no harm done. Shortly after, I noticed one of the rink guards seemed to be following me around. I was not doing anything unusual, so I didn’t worry about it too much. After a while, he came up alongside of me and addressed me. He said a young girl had lodged a complaint with him that I had touched her “inappropriately”. I was floored! First, for a moment, I couldn’t even think what would have made anyone even say that. Then I thought of the close call earlier. I had no idea where I had touched her as I was busy trying not to flatten her! I explained to the guard what had happened, and thankfully he believed me (I was a regular at the rink, so the employees kind of knew me). But the situation really shook me up! What if the staff had not believed me or known me? How could I have proved that I had been avoiding a collision, not groping? I kind of stopped going skating after that, out of the realization that I was putting myself at risk. What if her father had been there and reacted the way some of the people on this post have? I would have been defending myself against possible violence for something I wasn’t even aware of doing. I have not seen the video of Ariana and the preacher, only the sill photo. Given their difference in size, the emotions of the moment, the man’s position as the orator of the service, I would be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. My guess is Ariana who would be most knowledgeable of what happened at that moment felt the same way. It is only trial by social media, where everyone feels the need to be judge and jury of situations taken out of context that can get you condemned with little recourse to defend yourself.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 29, 2018:
Golf is a game of self mental control. Even if you are playing in a group, how you play is determined by your own mindset. Each time you step up to the ball, no matter how well you hit it the the last time, how well your game has gone to that moment, your immediate concentration will determine how you you hit the ball this time. Your stance, the lie of the ball, the depth of the grass, the club you chose, your swing fulcrum, the power of your swing, movement of your body, ability to focus on your ball through the entire swing. So many points at which a minor error can severely affect the flight of that ball. Even on the green, the slope of the green, the height and texture of the grass, the moisture on the grass have to be taken into account. It is like playing chess against nature, with every move against a different opponent. ?⛳️

Barnie2years comments on Aug 28, 2018:
If someone was interested in me and it wasn't a fake account (I have had two of them so far, but they are pretty obvious), I would never not explore the possibility that we could have a relationship just because of an age difference. I dated a 39 year old when I was 19 and a 37 year old when I was 57. So it is quite clear that age is not a show stopper. But when I am looking for possible connections I have been keeping a 10 year down, three year up search criteria, just because I think there is a better chance of finding someone with more in common in that range.

You're right; sometimes it's easy to ignore all the pray stuff, other times it just boils your blood! The friend of a friend just found out she has breast cancer. First thing to do? Go to church and pray with your fellow prayer group. Who are you praying to, you morons?? If your God can cure your cancer, than why did he give it to you in the first place? Just to mess with you? A test of your faith? And if it doesn't get cured, then what? Your God felt the need to torture you for a few years before you die? This line of thinking drives me nuts! I generally just disregard it and keep my mouth shut. But when they are offering to pray for me, it can be almost impossible. And don't bring your damn preacher into the hospital to see me, or all bets are off!
Are atheist as racist as religious people?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 27, 2018:
From what I have seen on here and in other forums, people are people, regardless of belief. Much of racism is based on fear; fear of the unknown, fear of the not like us, fear passed down through generations. Fear can also be enhanced by the media. If your most common exposure to people of color, Muslims or even Jews is movies or television, you are going to have a very skewered view of these people. Though there has been some improvement, dark skinned people, especially men, were always portrayed as the drug dealers, the pimps, the criminals in most TV shows and movies. Muslims are generally portrayed as terrorists and thieves, Jews as money hoarders and con men. If your primary exposure to people not like you is the media, chances are you are going to have low opinions of those “others.” I ran into this a lot in the small villages of Pennsylvania, where the only contact many people had with anyone not white was very limited, but they had TV and movie theaters. Even if you were a non believer, your views on race were being formed in negative ways.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 27, 2018:
I was masurbating before I even knew what an orgasm was! I just knew it felt good to rub my dick when it was hard. Later, in my teens when I discovered orgasms, it became an almost daily thing! During the early years, it required no mental stimulation, it just felt good! Later, my mom’s romance books and even James Bond series supplied mental stimulation. In fact most anything mildly sexual could get things going. Sex Ed at my house was my dad giving me an age appropriate book on sex when I was around 11 or 12. You know the kind: a man and a woman fall in love, they get married, go to bed and the man put his penis in the woman’s vagina... It did teach me what balls did (sperm) which to that point all I knew was they were extremely painful if they were whacked in any way. And I found out that women had a whole different set of equipment rather than just missing pieces! We had played “Doctor” with girls, so I had some idea of what they looked like between the legs Now, masturbation is just a release to avoid wet dreams and thanks to free porn, remind me of what I used to do. I just gave my stepson a handful of condoms (I do work with Planned Parenthood, so I had a good supply), since he and his girlfriend are getting ready to move into a physical relationship. With both my son and stepson, I tried to let them know there was no topic off limits, no judgement.

How would you handle unsolicited touching?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 26, 2018:
I tend towards non violence in reaction to non violence. Attempted rape should solicit defense with every weapon or means at your disposal. Being cornered and feeling threatened, same. In a public place, being touched inappropriately; first be sure it was deliberate. I assume from what you described it was obviously not accidental. Your response, letting him know it was wrong was the first step. Any further contact deserves a full verbal assault and make a scene. Point him out to management, get others involved. Once you move to physical assault for something that is going to be his word against yours, you may find yourself having legal issues. I have, in my life, been approached and lightly groped by gay men. They were told in no uncertain terms that there was no interest and to back off. All of them did just that.
Would you or wouldn't you?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 26, 2018:
As it seems to be the consensus, it would depend. Too many variables for a definite statement; what kind of cancer, how early it was caught, what treatments would involve, and cost. At my age, prostrate cancer, probably not. A cancer that would be slow and painful? I would have to consider a trip to a country or state with right to die laws.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 25, 2018:
I’m only guessing here, but I lived in Europe and follow trends over there, so bare with me. Many if not most of the Islamic migration to Western/Northern countries are first generation out of countries were women are truly considered to have no rights, and subject to far more cultural rules in their lives than men. For many of the men, they have never seen a woman, especially a woman of their skin tone, in any clothing that did not cover them from head to toe. So if nothing else, you are an oddity when you dress like your Finnish neighbors. At the same time, your freedom makes them fear that their own women may start to seek your obvious freedom to choose how you dress. This changes family dynamics which have been in place for generations, and few men, despite their fleeing their own country, are not going to give up easily. If it is just staring and probably ogling you as you pass by, or snooping looks into your kitchen, it is unlikely you can get them to change. If it should progress to any form of verbal or physical confrontation, then you will have to contact the law and consider means of self defense. Be it pepper spray, a baton of some kind or self defense classes for you and your daughters. Another option might be to just address them head on, not aggressively, but just in public conversation. Get to know them and perhaps understand their issues, as well as to let them know that you are not from their countries, nor of their faith. You are not trying to start a rebellion of their wives and daughters. That will happen on its own as the younger generations observe the world around them. Best of luck and it sounds like you are otherwise happy with your choice of where you want to live.

Maiasaura below who gets asshole comments on her job would have probably gotten asshole responses to whatever topic was brought up! I was never ashamed to say what I did for a living and it never occurred to me that the person was trying to scope out my earning potential. Maybe I was wrong. Stay on this site for constructive and enlightening interactions with fellow non believers. Change your status to seeking community and don’t flatter yourself that just because you don’t believe in god all the women on here are going to be lining up to have sex with you. Work the sex issue out with your wife, one way or the other. (we couldn’t with my last wife, which is one of the reasons I am alone) Then decide if you both can compromise or need to move on. Then come back and change your status to looking to meet. Of course maybe you could talk your wife into an open marriage, then as long as your honest with whomever you might meet, could work out.

This of course is why headline writing has become an art form and staple of “fake news” as our dear leader likes to call it. I feel quite certain Trump never gets past the headline on most everything he is given to read. Making world changing decisions based on the headline of a detailed DOD report, or an environmental report has consequences that are generally not positive. I believe it is at the heart of our societal deterioration, “sound bite” news is not how you learn what is real.

I haven’t been on very long, but compared to Facebook, I have found some interesting, in depth, discussions on topics of interest. You have to do some digging to find those topics, and pass up a lot of garbage, but I find it worthwhile. Sadly many post strange, innocuous stuff just to get points. And responders throw out insults, stupidities and non responses, but they are easy enough to skip over and not respond to. I dropped out of the singles group shortly after joining because I got tired of all the posts saying good morning and talking about their breakfast and coffee consumption. I also don’t get why people feel the need to respond to posts in negatives and off the cuff responses that contribute nothing to the conversation, as so many did here on this post. Gold generally doesn’t float to the surface, you have to dig for it and throw out a lot of dirt to get to it. Don’t leave, just spend a little more time filtering out the drivel and be open to find new friends and topics.
I thought the compatibility scores were supposed to be based on our own interests ?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 16, 2018:
My understanding is it is based on the number of matches in your profile questions. The percentage doesn’t weigh which answers, and the less questions you answer, the higher your percentage of matches is liable to be. A very unsophisticated and inexact number for sure if I am right.

I'm not sure I consider RIP a religious reference, though I am sure religious people may. But for many, including myself, we look at death as a respite from the trials and tribulations of life, not as the beginning of a new journey into the promised land LOL! Like a dreamless sleep is peaceful. One of my current meds has been making me dream nightly, not nightmares but exhausting dreams anyway. I would love to rest in peace at night. And don't fear the other, since that ends any problems I may have anyway.

I like Martin O'Malley myself. He is young, energetic, working tirelessly for progressive candidates throughout the country for the past year. He is well spoken, seems like a fun guy to hang out with and needs to get more air time. I fought for Bernie the last time, and I like him and Elizabeth Warren as senators, but not sure either is the right person to take on Trump at this critical time in our democracy. I would love to have more background on Martin or see someone new take the lead. What I don't want is Hillary making another run for president. She let Trump and the Republicans override her entire campaign and did not have the strength to go toe to toe with the Orange Baboon!

Kind of surprised by my Ancestry results. I have mostly German ancestry, both mom’s parents are German Swiss and my dad’s father’s family is German. Only my father’s mother was Irish/Scotch decent. My DNA came back 63% UK. The other largest percentages were Scandinavia and Italian, with minor percentages from other countries, nothing from Germany at all! How can 3/4 of my ancestry be German and no DNA shows up in my test. Kind of made me wonder how accurate they are.

Was becoming atheist difficult?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 15, 2018:
I’m not sure you “become” an Atheist so much as you just kind of wake up to the lies floating around you that are built on what at best is a really bad history book. I am not sure I ever swallowed the whole praying and thanking malarkey, since it was obviously kind of a useless pastime (people still died, food was bought at the store by money earned by working, Santa didn’t bring toys). I tend to question everything and search for logic, and there was none to be found in any religious practice I could find.

Ignore or block them, save yourself the brain drain of reading their spew!

I had a girlfriend who identified as Christian, but never attended church or identified as a particular sect. She believed that her interpretation of the Bible was more accurate than any denominational interpretation, so she refused to join a church. You know, because thousands of years of biblical interpretation could not match her understanding. ?

Excluding sex or bathing, what activities have you done naked?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 12, 2018:
I convinced my second wife to go to a local naturalist camp twice. The actual reason we went twice was the first time she did not get naked and was told she could not be in the pool area in a bathing suit. So I convinced her that she didn’t really have the nudist experience and talked her into going and actually being naked. She was not comfortable with it and we never went again. I also spent three days by myself at Hedonism II in Jamaica nude resort. I consider this to have been one of my best vacations ever, though it would have been much more fun if I had a partner there to enjoy it with.
Do you ever feel like you live in a different world to everyone else?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 12, 2018:
I have felt likeI didn’t fit in my whole life! Some of it I blame on the fact that my father’s work has us moving every two to three years, often to different countries. You become used to developing your own way of thinking and don’t tend to let yourself make close attachments. Hard to be a sheep when your herd keeps changing! Being exposed to different cultures and values opens your mind to not being pigeonholed as well. But it makes it very hard to find a place to fit in. You find that groups may appeal to one part of your beliefs, but totally turn off others. I have lots of acquaintances, but not really any I would consider close friends. I belong to a motorcycle group and enjoy many of the people when we meet, but feel no real rapport with any of them and don’t associate outside our club activities. Same when I was working and a union member. I was an officer in my local, but never felt attached to my fellow officers or members. I have gotten used to being alone and find myself avoiding people as much as possible, while still being available to those few who take the time to contact me.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 11, 2018:
Being a kind person within your tribe is generally not too difficult, and the vast majority of people are. It is one of the reasons humans form tribes, be they geographic areas, common ancestry, race or religion. Being nice to those outside your tribe requires more work and a more fluid view of your belonging in one tribe. Christians for instance will donate money and time for missions and food banks etc. But they don’t necessarily want those people they are supporting to move next door, or even into their town. White suppremists will help their fellow white people gladly, but not a person of color. A homophobe might be the nicest person you could meet if you are a heterosexual couple, but would treat you like dirt if you were a homosexual one. So being kind and nice is often dependent on many factors. There are those people who tend to be less tribal and more open and able to being kind to everyone. Sadly, I don’t think they are a majority, or there would be far less violence in the world.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 11, 2018:
Not sure about British divorce law, but in Pennsylvania, when I got my first divorce (1977) it was a “fault” state. In order to file for divorce you had to provide a valid reason (cheating, abuse, etc). Since I was filing, I had to provide the reason I wanted the divorce. In truth, we had just grown apart and the love had dried up and disappeared, but that would not qualify. So my attorney and I came up with a bunch of bullshit stories about her swearing at me, throwing things at me, name calling etc. I dreaded her reading it and tried to explain, but she was rightfully hurt and pissed. Thank goodness a few years later Pennsylvania changed the law for divorce to “no fault” and finger pointing was no longer required. Maybe the UK has fault divorce too.
Men/Women, Is sex a requirement for an enjoyable romantic relationship?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 10, 2018:
It didn't work for me. The difference in our definition of what "normal" married sex should be was way off. She would be quite willing to live together if there were no physical activities involved. I have absolutely no interest in a platonic housemate. When I love someone, I want to be as close to that person as two people can get. And it doesn't get any closer than sex. If I am going to have to masturbate and watch porn for sex, why bother having a wife or girlfriend? LOL

But once you take the step she requires, you are going to have to bow to many further religious conditions such as your child's baptism, catechisms, holiday mass, etc. Unless you have a real strong belief that this is a once and done deal, you better plan on faking the God thing for the rest of your married life.

Because religion is so boring they have to turn it into entertainment complexes just to get people to show up. All these mega churches have better sound and video systems than most concert venues! At least they know the money they donate is going to something useful like a waterslide and not some food program for the poor or medical supplies for third world countries!
