Flown on them a number of times, and I always loved the Boeing 707. I was a little kid when I first flew on one and back then Pan Am used to give kids coloring books and little plastic captain’s wings. 😀 There’s a great story about the development of this plane and Tex Johnson, the Boeing test pilot, who performed a barrel roll just to impress airline executives.

First, I apologize for not being able to read through your entire essay. However, I get the gist. My wife and I own a care facility for seniors and have a core cadre of fantastic staff. Periodically we are in need of additional staff, but when we put out a job requisition we get responses, and people actually commit to applying. They get their fingerprints and set up interviews. Then, for some unknown reason they ghost us. No calls, no emails, nothing! They don’t even have the courtesy to tell us that they made another decision. If ghosting is this generation’s way of turning down work, it says a lot about this generation’s sense of courtesy. We set aside time to meet with a potential candidate, and then they ghost us? They don’t even have the common courtesy to say they won’t be coming? Rudeness is all I can say this is! Thoughts? Observations?

A problem that some humanists have with Richard Dawkins goes back some years, and appears to be connected with Dawkins’ association with Maajid Nawaz, Bill Maher and Sam Harris, to name a few strident critics of Islam who have come under fire by humanists and members of the LGBTQ community. Labeling Dawkins and his ilk “Islamophobes,” many reactionary humanists—what Nawaz has referred to as the ‘regressive left’—have rallied in support of “disadvantaged Muslims” on many campuses, deplatforming, attacking and otherwise ‘canceling’ not only Dawkins, but former Muslims Ayan Hirsi Ali and Maryam Namazie. While there is no clear intersection between Islam and the LGBTQ community, one was created when members of the latter chose to publicly criticize atheists who dare attack the Islamic religion.

I learned about Dietrich Bonhoeffer in college at a Christian institution. Bonhoeffer was a unique and admirable Christian leader who spoke out against the Nazis and the persecution of the Jews, and was executed for his dissent. I was unaware until this video of his position on stupidity. It would seem that his philosophy overlapped Orwell’s, and clearly the followers are just as guilty as the leaders in such a dysfunctional society. The lesson to be learned here is this: we should never focus too much attention on the leaders, as it takes followers and adherents for obscene dictators and fascists to maintain power.

p-nullifidian comments on Oct 22, 2021:
One of the few truths that I personally hold to be self evident is the concept of equality, as espoused by the author of the Declaration of Independence and the Framers of the Constitution of the United States. That we as individuals [initially meant for white male property owners, but later expanded and applied to all] have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that We the People are our own sovereigns, as opposed to the throne or the altar, were bold, and yes, pernicious ideas in the 18th century. Sovereignty over our own persons, both mind and body, is not a negative that of necessity leads to a rejection of expertise, experience and authoritative knowledge. That said, the freedom to choose does not ensure wisdom in decision making. Some choose to join up with a questionable group. It is the tribalism you’ve described which I find truly pernicious. Tribal truths become doctrine, and the behavior of tribes much like a religion. Peer pressure and tribal identity often overcome one’s own epistemological individualism, and the results can be widespread and catastrophic. Personally, I would be much happier with a little more introspection and self examination over surrendering one’s epistemological independence to a tribal identity. “This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.”
I was so foolish and naive to think that this group might disappear after the election.

An excellent point here. We seem to be hardwired as a species for answers and certainty, and are uncomfortable with a lack of absolutes. Even though it requires credulity and unwarranted certitude, religion offers us the absolutes that we crave. When science demonstrates that, in the words of Karl Popper, “all knowledge is provisional,” and our understanding of the universe and the phenomena by which we are surrounded is continually evolving, we seem troubled by the lack of certainty. And yet, once we are able to take a step back from this land of indubitableness and enter the land of reason with its scientific method, continuous change and upward spiral of knowledge, we may then, and perhaps only then, free ourselves from a universe of absolutes.

If a “supreme being” existed, he-she-its existence would be an objective physical fact, like the existence of the sun. Not a supernatural phenomenon, but a natural one, explainable by the laws of physics. It seems illogical to presume that a supreme being would interact with “lesser” beings in a discriminatory manner. In other words, the fact of his-her-its existence and the nature of his-her-its relationship with humanity would be a universal. And while there would always be insane people who would deny his-her-its existence as factual, such as those insane persons who deny the shape of the earth or the existence of viruses, this supreme being would, it seems to me, be unmoved by such denial of fact. In other words a supreme being would be no more injured by our denial of his-her-its existence than we would be by a common housefly denying ours.

An excellent question. I believe time is a component that may be overlooked here. The vile actions of R. Kelly are perhaps too fresh in the minds of many to separate the art from the artist. I am reminded of the case of playing Richard Wagner in Israel. For many decades following the end of World War II, it was unthinkable to imagine playing the music of a rabid anti-Semite who was championed by Adolf Hitler in a concert hall attended and performed by survivors of the Holocaust. Wagner, who once said, “The Jew is the plastic demon of the decline of mankind,” represented all that was evil about Nazi Germany, and anti-Semitism in general, and was not even heard on the radio. Gradually, this informal ban has been lifted, first on radio stations, and in recent years by a symphony orchestra in Tel Aviv. Attempts have been made to introduce Wagner to audiences of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, but under strong protests. It would seem that as long as survivors are with us who have tattoos in their forearms, Wagner concerts will remain a taboo for the IPO. Personally, I leave the choice of whether or not to play Wagner to the Israelis, however I feel that while an artist like R. Kelly is living, to promote his work via royalty or in any other way, and by extension put money in his pockets, would be a great dishonor to his victims.

p-nullifidian comments on Oct 6, 2021:
It would seem unlikely that anything more than a position or endorsement might be taken here, as the states are the ones that determine public school curricula. And as one might expect, what is taught in the public schools varies from state to state. Southern states, for example, have historically been hesitant to confront their history in textbooks when it comes to slavery and the Civil War, Jim Crowe and public segregation. That said, what is happening in recent years appears more like an all out assault on the public schools curriculum through book banning, attempts to insert “intelligent design” into the science classroom and renewed efforts to reassert “traditional values” in the schools. Conservative Christians, especially when in the majority of a given community, would like to forget sometimes that we are a pluralistic and secular society and government.

Anti-science, anti-civility, anti-reason, anti-evidence, anti-intellect, anti-democracy, anti-diversity, anti-law, anti-progress! This is what Trump and his ilk represent!
Fairly accurate meme

Yup, sums it up. Republicans in Texas want to install more biased election officials, while Idaho’s bat shit crazy Lt. Gov., Janice McGeachin, patterns herself after her supreme orange-headed leader, issuing her own executive orders while the governor was out of state! The Republicans are rapidly racing toward the bottom, from state house to state house.
How can anyone support this fucked up shit is beyond me.
p-nullifidian comments on Oct 6, 2021:
This shit just keeps getting worse and never seems to end! Something tells me that we’re not going to hear a huge outcry from the faithful, many of whom bought into the Pizzagate Conspiracy.
As Gov.

The shit show continues for the Republicans in our state houses!
Thought antivaxxers were the epitome of motivated human ignorance?
p-nullifidian comments on Oct 6, 2021:
I continue to be amazed at the lack of scientific literacy, not only in our society as a whole, but on this site as well. One might have thought that people who have examined the subjects of religion and the existence of a deity skeptically and who remain, on the whole, unconvinced or even unbelieving, might regard science more dispassionately. But alas, logic and intellectual discipline are in short supply.

I’m a huge fan of Camel. During the heyday of prog, they were always near the top of my list. I listened to their Mirage, Moonmadness and The Snow Goose albums incessantly. Thank you for this share.
