How do my fellow Atheists deal with depression?

Frankly, I personally didn’t find comfort in faith when it came to depression. I would get blamed for it in some cases, “oh that’s just the consequences of sin.” Thanks buddy.

But I’m wondering what some of you do to help with depression? Meds? Therapy? Cuddling? Let me know.

I have tried a number of things with limited and varied success. Getting out and doing stuff helps but the trick is overcoming the inertia.

The long term help for me would be to have a meaningful goal and sense of belonging.

  1. Half a dropper of sativa cannabis oil disconnects you from OCD pressure and depression tendencies. CBD oil mitigates negative HTP side effects

  2. An early morning walk resets one's thyroid for higher energy and elevated mood.

  3. Plenty of fresh, organic food and outdoor exercise

  4. A cute pet to cuddle

I would tell you that happiness is found inside of yourself, you can find despair in what color your shoes are (or anything) and in the same stroke you can find joy and happiness in those shoes and for all the same reasons.....and always remember, tomorrow is another day to get it right

I watch sci-fi shows and spend as much time alone as I can until I snap out of it...

We do, we don't have a fictitious scapegoat.

Well, I either get drunk off my ass, or get stoned, it seems to work for me.

Not that easy but you need to find what it is that you are depressed about. Is it real or just in your imagination?

The wrong brain chemicals Jolanta. That’s far from made up.

This does not apply to clinical depression, which does not necessarily connect to anything situational. This is the type I have to manage.

@LeeLou

Support groups-- first online then in-person, counselling and medical care. First and foremost inform your doctor as he/she may be able to prescribe you something, make recommendations for herbal remedies or refer you to a psychiatric specialist. 🙂 Also, check out the group @MentalHealthSupport

Thank you

Thanks for linking him to the group. 😀

Could try agnostic approach to depression. It is not known if depression exists or not and it could never be known if depression exists or not.

For me, a nature hike always lifts my spirits when I get feeling a bit low.

On rainy days I settle for a good book with a cat on the lap.

Talk or cognitive therapy/counseling, meds, meditation/prayer, pets & dancing/exercise.

Cannabis.

I look for something wonderful to ponder. Sometimes it just takes looking out the window at nature. Concentrating on something beautiful usually gets depressing thoughts out of my head. 🙂

Depression!? Never heard of it!!

Yoga and meditation are helpful for some.
Talk to your doctor about an SSRI.
CBD oil or smoking the real thing.
Whatever you try, educate yourself first.
And remember, what works beautifully for one person may not work for you.
Buen suerte, amigo

Lack belief in the existence of depression

Does that approach work for cancer too?

Of course, you have never experienced something personally, therefore all the medical science be damned, it must not exist! fruit cake XD

ahh you are from Pennsyltucky... that explains your mentality. heh

@maturin1919I just meant there are alot of uneducated hicks from pennsylvania especially ones along the appalachian areas.

I don't get deep depressions, but when I'm down I look to do good stuff like cuddling, upbeat music, a good drink or a cup of great coffee, dressing well, good sex, or I can always go to my best memories, go through my trip photos, clean my favorite shoes or my car! In the end, we have to try and enjoy the good little things. Happiness is a sum of little happy moments!

Drinking 16 oz of raw celery juice with nothing added first thing in the morning kills anxiety and depression within a few days. Not kidding.

Not very well. I used to over listen to Cat Stevens and drink too much. It wasn't very healthy. my best coping mechanism is to realize that something is dragging me down.it helps to know, I kind of robotically go through my daily stuff these days. trip on it in bed usually then crash. By categorizing events just as that, and event, then going about my thing sometimes I feel I am underepresenting the thing. Maybe watering down the reality on one level. Although not dealing with an intense thought in technicolor the way things happen sometimes makes it easier. -Basically, I don;t dig into things as much as a did a few years ago. -I consider myself Agnostic because I definitively don't tangibly know, but think it is BS-

I found that taking medication was a life saver. I had no interest in life, people or living and after thirty days on medication I awoke one morning with an interest in doing something! Life is too short to waste a day feeling that kind of miserable. Advice like "go out and do something" comes from someone who has no idea what true depression is.

By not being depressed I guess, never an issue for me.

Very happy for you. Depression is an illness and can be extremely debilitating and you're right people who have not experienced depression don't get it or understand. You can still be supportive and empathetic.

@1crazymofo the poster asked a question, I replied. My reply was based on my experience as he requested and was not unsupportive or unempathetic at all, just matter of fact. By the way, why do you assume I don't get or don't understand depression? Just because you don't experience it doesn't mean you can't understand depression. Psychiatrists and psychologists don't have to experience it to treat it. You assume too much and wrongly.

@Mofo1953 So, do you comprehend/understand depression?

@1crazymofo do you?

Plan something that you enjoy doing for yourself . Make your bar-b-que sauce , put it with whatever kinds of vegetables it's good on , pack it in what ever's convinient for a bike ride , along with a good book . And go do what yu enjoy doing .

I remind myself of all the things that had to happen throughout cosmic history in order for us to be here and it makes me feel lucky to be alive. We're all borderline miracles.
