A long time ago in grad school, an older woman took one look at me and my then boyfriend and told me nobody at all was better than that. 2 decades later- lesson learned.

I agree - but with a slight caveat. There is a difference between having a "boy friend", a "boyfriend", and a "life partner". You can enjoy and have lots of fun with the first two - just for shits and giggles - while understanding that he will not ever be the last one. Time and place, a season and a reason...

However, I have a hard time believing that every year of those 20 were bad. In my own experiences - most of the times were good - it was only near the end of relationship that things became excessively intolerable to want to call it quits. I'd venture to guess that - in my life and in my relationships - there was a ratio of good to bad of around 10 to 1. Such a ratio allows me to really get into relationship building (or not). However, I find it very important that each partner is willing to work on the relationship - that then makes it work. It's when one or both give up that brings on the end. If the unwillingness comes in at the beginning - well - it ain't gonna work. Then you're better off not even starting.

I've been there and done that and totally agree. But, when the right person comes along (also been there) nothing is better!
