Today I would like to submit “Let Me Go”, which is a poem by Christina Rossetti which was read by a close friend of my son Graeme’s at his funeral last Friday. I chose a Humanist Celebrant to conduct the Service of Rembrance at the Crematorium, she did it beautifully.
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the joy that once we shared
Miss me but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone.
No one else can join with us,
To tread that path unknown.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know.
Laugh at the things we used to do,
Miss me but let me go.
We had to change the words in the third verse as the original ones had a religious connotation.
Lovely, thanks for sharing. So sorry for your loss.
Thank you.
I searched the original. You're right...it's religious. I like your version better. I'm going to copy it down and keep it handly. I know a friend on his death bed...and I'm afraid I might need it soon.
Thanks for this.
Glad you like the amended version. My son Neil and I jointly came up with the alternative two lines. Sorry your friend is so near the end, at least you will be expecting it...not so with my son, it was quite shocking for me.
Glad to see you back but deeply sorry for your loss. Regards.
Thank you.
