I think the root cause of all this mania is FEAR. These people have received poor education, or none, about how the world, and especially our government & communities are supposed to function. They have been told a Sky Daddy is looking out for them. Since this is manifestly untrue, this explains why the intelligent ones are the most frightened of all, and are turning to something/anything/ anyone who (falsely) promises them control & offers easy solutions such as blaming "the other". Thus they can somewhat mitigate & channel the awfulness of free-fall fear into tangible objects to hate. (because "they" caused it!) Lessen the fear, lessen the hate.
