Mysterious 'cat-fox' discovered, may be a new species
Druvius comments on Jun 20, 2019:
Wow, a new species of cat would be big news. I will be following this story.
How serious is this?
Druvius comments on Jun 20, 2019:
Probably not, the US get tons of domestic mileage out of saber rattling with Iran, an actual conflict would be a whole other can of worms. Still, a scary situation, wars have broken out over stupider things.

Druvius comments on Jun 18, 2019:
Gotta love how this is all framed as "he said a few bad things." As if being an outspoken racist is just a social gaffe. Way to reframe the debate. In any event, Harvard is a private institution, isn't it? As long as they didn't reject him for illegal reasons, whatevs. There's a lot worse things than being rejected by Harvard.

Luxembourg Becomes First Country to Make All Public Transit Free
Druvius comments on Jun 18, 2019:
Will be interesting to see how it works. Been a fail when tried in the US, homeless people and teenage gangs quickly cause problems. Still, suspect the social contract is a lot healthier in Luxembourg.

Like so many things, ideology is irrelevant. Comes down to, do you want the people driving on the road to be qualified to do so? And this way if one does get hit by an unlicensed undocumented person, they can be charged with driving without a license.
Well gee , how could anyone not believe this is going to happen for real !!??

Neat. Reminds me of a similar event a few years back. A fellow's dad died, he was a junk metal dealer, and under his bed in a box of misc junk his son found a gold cup. Turned out to be solid gold from seventh century Persia. Worth a fortune, no one had any idea how dad acquired it. :)
2nd Worst Mass Shooting in Australia 4 Dead, 1 Injured Only the 2nd mass shooting.
Druvius comments on Jun 4, 2019:
They might outlaw pump action shotguns. One really only needs a double barrel for hunting. Yes, Australia shows that gun control can be quite effective at preventing mass shootings. It's not a perfect analogy for the US, but certainly an example we can learn from. One can defend their home with a six shot revolver or double barrel shotgun, there's no reason for civilians to have more.

Druvius comments on May 17, 2019:
Very simple issue actually. You want to deliberately endanger your kids and spread disease through your community by not vaccinating them, you should have your kids taken away. Rights never allow a person to deliberately harm others, so there are no rights issues involved.

Wow, I did not know that meth was a thing with the Germans then! [facebook.com]
Druvius comments on May 10, 2019:
It's a pop history fad these days to claim Hitler and the Nazis were fueled and destroyed by meth. I can't find any support for this conjecture in mainstream scholarship. The Germans did supply their troops with amphetamines, but the dosages involved were modest.

Druvius comments on Dec 15, 2018:
Yeah, another area where our legal system and reality bear no relation. If baby powder causes ovarian cancer, the increased risk is so tiny as to be insignificant. Basically there is no good evidence that baby powder causes Ovarian cancer, and strong evidence it doesn't. Lawyers are going to make a pile of money (that's what this was all about to begin with,) a company will go bankrupt, and a lot of people with cancer win the lottery. Not surprising, it was widely believed in revolutionary and post revolutionary America that Canada was the "14th colony" that had only been kept from joining the US by geographic isolation. Wasn't much truth to it during the revolution, and afterwards when 250,000 Tories forced to flee from the US had settled in Upper Canada, no truth to it at all. the Canadian War of Independence put a final end to these lingering fantasies in the US. Still, I warn my Canadian friends when they visit the States, they will meet Americans who think Canada is part of the US.
