More pre-Clovis finds: [arstechnica.com]
Druvius comments on Sep 10, 2019:
One of the curious things about the Clovis Culture is how established the idea that it was the first New World culture got. So much so that when they hit the Clovis layers, they stopped digging. When Monte Verde finally completely proved there were pre-Clovis people in the Americas, archaeologists revisited some Clovis sites and kept digging, and at some of them found pre-Clovis materials. Oops, the evidence had been there all along. Not surprising, scientists can be as blinded by preconceptions as anyone. Most of them though eventually come around when evidence challenging their pre-conceptions is presented.

Scientists identify the genes linked to left-handedness
Druvius comments on Sep 5, 2019:
I'd be a little leery of making any connection to individuals, individual variation is pretty wide. That being said, fascinating that the rise of human language is almost certainly linked somehow to our very unusual species predilection for right handedness. I hadn't heard that before, thanks for posting.
Did atheism somehow cause - or contribute to - the rise of science?
Druvius comments on Sep 5, 2019:
No, I would say it's the other way around. Science showed that all sorts of things formerly attributable to God had perfectly rational explanations. Church steeples regularly get hit by lightning, and the invention of the lightning rod pretty much made that a non issue. That's one of the bigger ones, but they are legion. I also think it's a bit of an odd comparison, atheism isn't a thing, but the scientific method and institutions most certainly are. So I would say, and I am an amateur historian at best, that the rise in science engendered a weakening on organized religion. So atheism became more widespread and more open. Interesting question.

Plant-based "meats" - good for the environment, bad for you
Druvius comments on Aug 29, 2019:
He's misusing the word 'processed' as if it was inherently bad. Whole wheat flour is processed food. Cooked meat is processed food. The former was what fueled the rise of civilization, the later fueled the evolution of our huge brains. I'm guessing he's using it to mean food that has been stripped of nutrients and loaded with fat and sugar, and yeah, keep those to a minimum. I bet plant based mock burgers are all over the map, if it's made with good ingredients with no added fat and sugar, why not?

This is a conundrum many people have pondered. Some of the most creative people in history have had some very dark skeletons in their closets. My belief is that their work should be appreciated on its own merits, and if there are skeletons, they should be used as a teaching example if they come up. That being said, Neverland Ranch was NOT part of his creative body of work, it was a pedophile's child grooming facility. Burn it to the ground.

Yes, by middle age about a third of true sociopaths/psychopaths are living more or less normal lives. Some of them even study psychology to learn how to mimic normal emotions. All because they figured out that having friends/family/career in the long run is a much better deal than screwing over everyone they meet for short term gain. What are the non-negotiable claims of the Christian?
Druvius comments on Aug 13, 2019:
There are over 40,000 Christian denominations and countless millions of individual interpretation of Christ's message. The only thing they all have in common is that their faith is centered on Jesus. Maybe in your branch of Christianity those demands are dogma, but they don't apply to all Christians. None of your claims are scientifically testable, so science can't address them. What science can say is that evidence for supernatural influence on reality is essentially nil. God bless!

Colonialism, the gift that keeps on giving. When India was partitioned into India and Pakistan, by all rights Kashmir should have gone with Pakistan, being a Muslim majority state. One of the things that's just nucking futz about this is that decades ago a solution to the problem was at hand. A friend's troop I know implemented it. It's an unbreakable rule that there must always be two adults present, boys must never be alone with a single scout leader. Frankly there's a lot of institutions that should abide by this rule, maybe all institutions where adults interact with children.
